I am *so* impressed by everyone here--and inspired. I had the flu for two days this week but the team's growing number of canoes has me inspired to get one of my own by the end of the challenge (100,000 is a *lot* for me to imagine rowing).

Thanks to your encouragement, I rowed *two* 5,000 meter sessions today (3-minute rest between) so I could break through to 200,000 since I bought my rower in October. And I added a photo avatar so you know I'm a real person, not just a license plate as in my last avatar.

Thanks, Kona2, for all your inspiration and encouragement.

You asked about my shoulder after my Dec 22 surgery. I can't believe how well it's doing. I get better movement and less pain every day. I have absolutely no pain on the rower, but I'm not pulling hard yet, either. I usually pull the 10k at about a 2:07 pace, but I haven't done better than 2:09 since surgery. Patience is what I can't wait for. I still have not gotten my surgeon's attention regarding the contribution the C2 has made to my recovery. He thinks it was mostly his skill - which it probably was!

Glad you feel well enough to slide back onto the sliding seat. Be careful. There is some real flu-like nastiness making the rounds where we live -the reoccurrence seems to be worse that the initial outbreak.

Nice to have a face to put with the person. I'm one of the new folks too. Started rowing at the end of Dec.

Virtual Reality: Day 7/8 Dawns...

Post by Kona2 » January 7th, 2011, 12:28 pm

Image Be part of the Armoonda!

Your canoe awaits! And don't get caught upstream without a paddle!! ImageImageImage

There's a great story that goes with how this canoe, and its native inhabitants, came to reside on our virtual pages...perhaps AJ will tell everyone "this is how it all happened." After the episode of the Comet/Cupid straw and the sushi....we know that AJ tells a very good story. He also does a lot of really cool behind the scenes work to make these events fun for all of us - and several have asked "how's he do that?!" :D

Chris saw this 'boat' in our local museum in early December and she thought it would be a great piece of clip art to have for her LunaTics posts.

Image

I thought having 'natives' getting into canoes would be a fun metaphor for our virtual team challenge. So I looked closer at the 'natives':

Image

Thinking about these I drew a 'native profile' . . .

Image

. . . and used this profile as the basis for all of the adult LUNA-tics cartoons. I added hats and hair, ribbons and bows to add individuality. So far I have 52 cartoon characters, 40 of whom are patiently waiting to get to their canoes . . . well, most of them are patient

New rowing goals for 2011? We'll help you get there!

Congratulations! You made it through the first week of the Virtual Teams Challenge....and of the new year! Woot! We are now within 23.8 million meters of our target... the moon!! Our daily meter totals have been clicking away at what seemed like a gi-normous total, and now we're ever so much closer!

Image

Since it is likely that we will arrive well before the end of rowing year 2011, we already have our moon exploration map set for once we get there....lots of seas on the moon !

The skies over our rowing universe are filled with celestial bodies...we have mooning from coast to coast of North America. We have a slew (not Seattle) of repeater numbers (those gnomes again :D ), and some major milestones to celebrate! As a side note (that I will return to describe more fully), this year's Virtual Challenge Team is 1.4 million meters AHEAD of last year's team of 109....whoa!

Season meters as of 251/365 = 71,462,920 m

Total meters on the day = 576,333 m

Oars in space (participation) = 37 percent! Image That's what I'm talkin' about!

MILESTONES...Bragging Rights...Celebrations: We've got 'em!

5.0 MM Will S ends the suspense!
4.2 MM Minnie
3.2 MM Ray
1.2 MM Chip
900 K Mitch J
400 K Barbara
200 K Tonya....and maybe her first EVER 10K in one rowing day! More woot!
100 K Johnny
1 K Brayden (this 4 yr old doubled his meters yesterday! Woot!)

THREE Million Meter Watch:

Baz with (27,820 m) to go! Keeps us in suspense over the weekend....maybe.

TWO Million Meter Watch: Cathie, and Robyn are in the queue....

Rodrigo-go-go with (51,974 m) to go go go!

ONE Million Meter Watch: a growing field

Kristine with (40,083 m) to go!

Mitch with (99,453 m) to go!

Cool Half Million Watch:

Tom M with (23,021 m) to go! Next week for sure!

Peter H with (28,401 m) to go!

Dalton with (66,691 m) to go!

Image Jay shoots ahead with that new paddle and claims a full moon and then some! Way to row that 47,200 m!
Image Will S finishes off the 5 MM meters with a full moon and 45,000 m! Moon-rific!
Image Ray sends us a New Mexico style full moon plus some stars with 44,955 m!
Image Ron sends some gnomish numbers our way...33,333 m for a half moon plus a lot!
Image Brian gives us a fine update of 32,713 m and gets a half moon for his efforts...almost a full moon!
Image Jerry moves up the rowing ladder with 31,226 m for a half moon plus a lot!
Image Kenneth G with 25,000 m earns a half moon plus some!
Image Cathie takes a lead role in the Arctic Armoonda with a half moon and 24,702 m
Image Johnny fights off the gnomes, but not until they've done some fun...22,223 m for a half moon!
Image Chip with 22,000 m earns a half moon
Image AJ posts a half marathon for another half moon
Image Minnie posts half marathon # 163 on the rowing year...let's see... 163 HM out of 251 days.....not to mention all the meters she's rowed when NOT mooning us...whew.

We're on a mission! Doesn't matter how many meters you row..sometimes you just don't have as much time in the day!..we celebrate ALL of them! Of course, I'll always try to cajole you into more meters.... Thanks very much to all who rowed today!

Brayden 649 m
Ethan 1,145 m

Congratulations to all who have jumped in their canoes, and have found their paddles! Ben is on the rower as I type, getting his final meters for the canoe. He can't wait to see his native.

Thanks for the story in pictures, AJ!
