Hoo-boy....the Holiday Challenge beastie

Hoo-boy! 5 days (including today) left for rowing in the Holiday Challenge for this year! Wouldn't it be great if the collective rowing universe fully met the $30,000 goal that Concept2 has for its donations? Last year, we all pulled for about $27,900+ ...and missed their mark.

If, like a certain astrogator, you've left a bunch more meters on the table that you planned to have at this time, you're probably in the row, row, row mode....because it just has to be done.

Here's what it looks like for those shooting for the 100K Holiday Challenge boards...and the reindeer (c'mon we need more):

Tim P with (6,444 m) to go!
Jack with (17,241 m) to go!
Brandy with (22,044 m) to go!
Teresa with (30,623 m) to go!
Dave H with (51,168 m) to go!

Here's what it looks like for those aiming for the 200K Holiday Challenge boards...and the antler lights:

Tony with (2,494 m) to go
Rick with (6,724 m) to go
Peter G with (14,000 m) to go
Barbara with (17,683 m) to go
Mitch J with (26,105 m) to go
Ted with (29,000 m) to go
Rosi with (30,545 m) to go
Rodrigo with (35,541 m) to go
Greg H with (37,471 m) to go
Terri H with (44,640 m) to go
Kenny H with (45,304 m) to go
Ross with (49,000 m) to go
David T with (50,000 m) to go
Mike M with (53,839 m) to go
Peter H with (68,708 m) to go
K2 with (68,882 m) to go
Andrea with (86,107 m) to go

And there's probably some more, but that's what I saw just now. And since we need all our reindeer to run the sleigh, I'm pretty sure Jim K is going to reindeer with us through the Holiday Challenge, then gear up fully with his team. Thanks for that!

I have been off the boat and board for some time... :(
Missed you all, and missed lots of wonderful milestones and new team mates.

Congratulations and welcome!!!

And Goodbye to Jim and his folks and best wishes of success!
I got to notice Jim's amazing meters, together with all our amazing front runners :).

I am taking a few days off from work to prepare for Christmas, and I am also trying to get in enough meters for the 200k I did not miss since I joined the team for the challenge in 2007, even when we were sailing around New Zealand this time last year...

It might be a tall order for me this year, starting so late, but will try...

Good luck to everybody to reach whatever milestones you want to achieve !

Happy rowing!

Andrea

No worries - there is no reason to be mad about anything. Sometimes we space travelers come across a team in need of some sanctuary - and we offer what assistance we can. We do our best to treat people with respect and a sense of fun - just like we'd like to be treated. We're a good team - and Jim's team will be good, too. Whatever your decision, you'll be on a good team! It's all about what motivates YOU to row more, try harder, be your best. That's what we have team rooms for - to offer encouragement, share stories, commiserate when we have a LOT of meters still to row to make our goal (because we've always made our goals...and it would be like....unthinkable.....not to make them).

It takes a lot of things to make a team room really rock - and one of the most important things is to create an environment where those who might not always take a moment to comment on something, feel like it is safe and maybe important to do so. Thank you for taking time to make a first posting on the forum, Rosi - may you continue to share your thoughts with your teammates. For those of us who spend literally hours putting the numbers together, finding the graphics, cheering on teammates - it's always good to know that others do read what we send out there! Of course, with this group, they've not been too shy in sharing what their thoughts are....In the meantime, we'll need reindeer power.....row, row, row....gotta get those lights....

Don't forget the lunar eclipse tonight/early morning - history has many references to the impact of "the disappearing moon." Some, like Christopher Columbus, used the knowledge that an eclipse was going to happen to keep the natives supplying him and his crew with food. Chinese astronomers were beheaded by their emperor for NOT correctly predicting an eclipse. War in the Middle East ceased because both "sides" were so stunned by the power of the universe to create a lunar eclipse. So keep your eyes on the coordinates...our target will be back in view in short order. :D

Sonic Boom!

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, Rocket Man! Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, Rocket Man!

Wowzer, mates! The sonic boom alerted us in time to see Rocket Man streaking across the sky...so to speak. He's claimed his reindeer, Boomer, in a flash unlike any that of any other Luna-Tic! Yes, Boomer's flight lessons will be a little different...but he'll be ready for sleigh duty!

Congratulations, Rocket Man, on reaching the 100K Holiday Challenge Board...and beyond....!

.... Boomer / Rocket Man.....

I get up pretty early for a row at the moment (4.15am) as it is very pleasant watching the sun come up, and besides I'm an early mornng person when it isn't cold! I might have to get up just a little earlier as I believe we will be able to see it up until around 4.00am......Whoopsie...think I 've got this wrong..it was this morning on this side of the date line...BBB

I just finished making and wrapping the last of my Christmas gifts (many jars of crunchy granola, plus bottles of a garlicky/balsamic dipping oil) and went out to look at the moon -- 9:00 pm Pacific Time. It's cloudy, but they're moving fast, and the moon is gorgeous ... if the next front doesn't arrive before midnight, I'll at least see the beginning of the lunar eclipse. (It's so freaky, to suddenly see Bazz posting, tomorrow already!)

Happy Birthday, Kristine. Not often one gets a "disappearing moon" to mark the occasion!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes. I ate way too much chocolate cake. Just went outside to check on the moon, and we've got a lot of clouds moving fast here, too. Will have to take another look in a couple of hours.

Rosita, it has been great to have you along for the ride, even if for only a little while. I think it is so cool that you made your first post here, and that you cared enough to let us know your plans. Best of everything in life to you as you venture on.

C'mon Andrea and Jan, you can do it!

A little trivia for you all..

This lunar eclipse falls on the date of the northern winter solstice. How rare is that?

Total lunar eclipses in northern winter are fairly common. There have been three of them in the past ten years alone.

A lunar eclipse smack-dab on the date of the solstice, however, is unusual.

Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years.

"Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is December 21, 1638," says Chester. "Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on December 21, 2094."

Happy Birthday, Captain Kristine!

We checked the moon after 23:30 and saw it perfectly, then tried to see it again (after finishing the last 10 mins for my 20km for the day) but clouds had rolled in...

Happy rowing!

Tomorrow, I'll be going "under the knife" to repair my left shoulder. I regret that I'll not be rowing for a while. I'm disappointed not to participate in the January challenge. But...I'll be back! Being a total lunatic since the FRC has been a blast. And I still can't believe how great a contribution indoor rowing has made to my health and recovery from aortic valve replacement surgery in late 2009. Thanks to all of you for your encouraging words and for all the fun. Remember...I'll be back!

Ross, God bless you during your surgery and recovery. Know you will be back rowing stronger than ever. Hope it is outpatient surgery as being in the hospital during the holidays can be a downer.
