Thanks for all your encouragement. You make the team fun to be a part of. I think I'll get my million tomorrow, but I'm rowing in pain. I was diagnosed with a torn left shoulder rotator cuff yesterday and I pulled a muscle in the middle of my back lifting weights over the week-end. But rowing neither increases nor decreases my pain - it's just there. I'll bet I'm no different than many others who row everyday - for the love of it. I'm going to row as much as I can before surgery on the rotator cuff (last week in Dec). I'm betting that other rowers have gone through this and used rowing to recover. I should hit 2011 ready to go! By the way, besides rowing for distance, do any Loonies race the 2k?
Ross Drown
First of all, congrats on almost hitting a million meters. Secondly, do be careful. Yes, many of us Loonies row through injuries, but be sure to do it on doctor's orders. There are many more challenges ahead of you. We don't want you to risk any permanent injuries for pushing yourself when you should be resting.

As for the 2k race, some of us have raced in indoor sprint races. I think Gina is our most recent competitor and winner. (Feel free to correct me Loonies if I am wrong.) I raced the CT Indoor Championships a couple of times, but that was back in 2004 and 2006. If you are considering competing in one, that's great, but put it on hold for a while. For now take it easy and take care of your shoulder.

All the best!
Karyn

Another meter millionaire!

Woohoo and hooyah! Way to row! Congratulations, Ross, on achieving a ONE million meter season! We wish you many, many more!

Wishing you a speedy recovery and good repair of that rotator cuff! You've indicated that you'll keep rowing until surgery (good man) - and with 77,722 m to go for THE PIN and the antler lights...the goal is just ahead!

Antler Lights!

Post by Kona2 » December 15th, 2010, 12:14 pm

With a lot of fanfare, hooyahs, and high hoofin' (maybe a megaphone shout or two), another antler lighting ceremony took place. During the placement of the lights, it's so quiet you can't even hear the proverbial mouse....all those sharp points on the antlers, gotta be really still. But when the lights flash on....woohoo! Reindeer party time!

Congratulations, Meteor / Dan E, on meeting the 200K Holiday Challenge goal (and exceeding it) - and getting the coveted antler lights! And the pin!

Ross, thanks for your encouraging words, and please do be careful not to injure yourself any more. WOOT, WOOT for your million meters achievement! And to all the others who are making their reindeer and their lights as I type! And nice to see your profile pic here. Now I know who you are! That means a lot - like the difference between talking to a person standing in front of you versus a phone call from an unknown caller.

And this makes me wonder, does C2 have a torso harness of some kind for athletes who don't have the use of their arm/arms? Taking a look around the barn of my childhood, I am thinking one could use a form of horse halter (the thing you put one a horse's head to lead them around with). As kids we would stick our head through the part the nose goes in; one arm through each lower cheek section; and buckle it around our back at the waist with the part that goes behind the horse's ears. This puts an anchor/attachment point (a ring) right on the high sternum which you could attach the rower pull chain to. I don't know if an actual horse halter would fit an adult so well (maybe one for a large or draft horse), or if the rowing action would rub against it in a bad way, but maybe the idea could be adapted to make a torso harness that would work. Just a crazy thought on the topic of how to keep rowing when parts of us are broke.

Kristine, what a great idea on the torso halter. But what about the idea of pulling the chain with one arm while the other one heals. Has anyone ever done that?

Didn't our infamous Doctor Dan have a recent bout with that issue?????? He usually checks in at least once a day here, so we will await his reply.

My main concern with that would be creating a new problem due to imbalanced pulling, so you would really want to monitor for that.

I recently realized that I was creating this imbalance issue for myself because my rower had shifted only a couple of inches off center to my projector screen, and just turning my head slightly to the side to watch my movie while rowing was creating a really bad knot in the muscles on one shoulder.

I had never had this issue from rowing before, so started to look for the cause after it became evident that the rowing was causing the knotting. The rower must have been moved when I was vacuuming under it, and not put back properly. I am no longer having the muscle knotting and pain now that the rower is set so I can keep perfect alignment during exercise, so I am certain that misalignment/imbalance was the cause.

Welcome to all the new Luna-tics and congratulations to all the recent achievements, and a special congratulations to K2!!

Reading about injuries, rotator cuffs etc; one of the common areas that get tightness especially in rowers and kayakers is the rhomboids and terres minor region. I usually deal with this by ‘rolling’ on a tennis ball in both these areas after rowing or kayaking. I find it helps greatly in keeping the muscles ‘loose’ and thus avoiding potential injury from tightness.

But be warned, it is a bit like beating your head against a brick-wall, it feels much better when you stop.
