LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 11.12.10
Busy teammates....
We're closing in on 45 million team meters - surely today will be the day! All we need is 66,332 m....whoa - we get some updates that look like that! Biggie milestones on the horizon for many....go long on the rows!
We have 30 days in this year's Holiday Challenge (think we had 28 last year), and while that decreases the minimum needed if you row every single day of the challenge - it's always a more pleasant experience to be well prepared. If you're rowing 5000 m...you might want to up it to 6,000 m ... and then 7,000 m (gradually that is).
Season meters as of 195/365 = 44,933,668 m
Total meters on the day = 105,595 m
Oars in space (participation) = 14 percent
MILESTONES...Bragging Rights...Celebrations:

You'll be rowing again before we know it, Barbara!
And speaking of alternative transportation - alternative to rowing, that is - how did the Great North walk go, Baz? Gadget envy re: SPOT tracker! I was wondering if you had enough daylight to finish your ambitious trek ....wowzer, mate - that's a full marathon plus....so I believe you have definitely earned a FULL moon!

Well what a day! It started at 1.50am not too far from where we live and the walk wound its way through the Lane Cove National Park and then into the Berowra Waters area. It was very different starting at that time and experiencing the bush in darkness. Not that I haven’t been out at night before, but not on an undertaking like this. And I must add that I got to bed at 10pm and felt like I woke every 15 minutes until 1am.Kona2 wrote:You'll be rowing again before we know it, Barbara!

My planning was pretty good and I actually had gained time up until Berowra Waters, but the heat (around 33 degrees celcius) and humidity was taking its toll by the time I got to that point and I used the time I had gained to rest for about 20 minutes before pressing on.
The section from Brooklyn to Cowan involves going up a steep hillside and then down and up three large (large) gullies. At this stage I was about 10 hours into the walk and it was around midday and I couldn’t drink enough fluid to stem the rate I was losing it at. In my planning I had allowed 2 ½ hours to Cowan; it took me 3 ½ hours so I was now running an hour behind time. I have walked the section a few times and completed it in 3 hours; however that was starting from Berowra Waters and not 10 hours into a walk, something I didn’t take account of in my planning. This meant I would be running the risk of finishing in the dark at Brooklyn and thunder storms were also building in the area. And that was assuming I would have enough left in the ‘tank’ to finish! And I wasn’t confident of that and whilst the last section is fairly straight forward there is one significant climb……
I was spent and rather than let the ‘ego’ get in the way of a sensible outcome I called in the ‘recovery’ team…Janet and Thomas, and they were a welcome sight when they arrived. Whilst a little disappointed I fell short of the initial objective I was happy overall, covering 40 kilometres involving a total cumulative ascent of around 6,500 feet (and don’t my legs know it this morning!) carrying a 15 kilogram backpack.
I think I could have got the nutrition a little better, and the weather will always be what it is. I drank in excess of 12 litres of fluid and still had a net loss of weight of around 3 kilograms, so it goes to demonstrate just what sort of fluid loss can occur.
I’ll be back to tackle this again……on a cooler day!

Way to go, Baz!
Wow, Baz - I keep forgetting that it is 100 plus degrees there. Extreme walking ! I don't know if they do ratings on these walk sections, but sounds like that one should be rated difficult - especially with the changes in elevation.
20 Million Lifetime Meters for Danno

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Hold on, hold on...
My 6k yesterday was not on open water, but rather on snow. We got about 10 inches here this weekend and I couldn't resist getting out the skis. Really poor conditions for the first lap, but after my tracks set up it wasn't too bad. I'm planning to go out again tonight.
I noted the meters as "on snow" in my logbook, but don't know how they appear on the affiliation board. I didn't even know about the "on snow" option until I was reading up on the skierg. Do ski meters still count on our lunar expedition? What about in the upcoming challenges? If it's a problem I'll track my ski meters somewhere else... no biggie.
