Welcome to the year-round Luna-Tic team, Ross! We're glad to have you on both the Fall Challenge Team and the year-round one! Wishing you many good rowing days!
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Howdy fellow Luna-tics......
Sorry for the lack of metres (and the teasing!) but I've been struck down by a virus over the past few days...and must have slept for almost 48 hours! I couldn't muster the energy to log-on to the computer let alone look at the ERG. So it might be another couple of days before I'm back in the saddle..so to speak.
I was actually supposed to be walking in Papua New Guinea right now, and whether I would have got a virus at this time if I was up there is open to question, but maybe I should be thankful either way that I am tucked up home in bed!
What was it that Forest said....Life's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get!
On the home front...Tomo is about to start the Athletic season and he even threatened to come out of 'retirement' and do a few rows!
Cheers BBB

Went and saw the doctor today. Three to six months for the ribs to be pain free and an emphatic "No Rowing". Got my eye on a recumbant bike. Sounds boring. Good luck all with the Fall Challenge.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Bummer! Recumbent bike for outside or recumbent exercise bike? Lots of folks enjoy both - if it's an indoor exercise variety, you can do some reading while you're pedaling! Hopefully you're on the three month improvement plan! Keep checking in with us, and speedy recovery to you!Gyrodon wrote:Went and saw the doctor today. New team member
There are 65* team members on the Luna-Tics team now! Welcome to new year-round team member - and Fall Challenge team participant - Brett M. !
Lots of room on the challenge roster for anyone who is looking to be part of a great team for the Fall Challenge! Row what you can or have time to row - it's all good stuff. We want to keep everyone rowing throughout the challenge season (which is basically from now until the end of the rowing year in May 2011 - and beyond!), so ramp up to more meters carefully. More meters can always be accomplished in more frequent, but shorter, rowing sessions!

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Hello all, I'm excited to join you for the Fall Challenge.
All growing up, I was involved in sports like baseball, wrestling, football, and track. Upon graduating high school, I served in the Marine Corps for 6 years. Afterwords, I played a couple years of college football. So, the first 26 years of my life were very active. Then, I started my life in the wonderful corporate world of working in a cubicle. At the beginning, I played in sports leagues like flag football before moving to slow-pitch softball and finally bowling. My wife and I belonged to a gym for the first couple years, but we stopped going when we had our first child. Before 9 days ago, I don't think I'd done any real physical activity for the past 3 years. I ballooned up to an impressive (sarcasm) 343 pounds. I've acquired quite a few health problems than I can directly attribute to being much too heavy. Instead of trying to find some drugs to put a band aid on the problem, I decided I'd do some good old-fashioned hard work and see what happens. About 4 weeks ago, I started eating right. I started drinking a gallon of water a day instead of drinking juice and soda. I quit bread and pasta and started eating more rice and squash. Instead of skipping breakfast, having a light lunch, and eating from 4 pm to midnight, I try to eat something small every 2 hours or so. I've now lost 20 pounds and feel like I have some momentum going. In a couple weeks, I'm going to try to quit smoking (pack a day habit for 16 years). I just enrolled in a smoking cessation program yesterday, and now I'm waiting for the kit to come in the mail.
I just bought a Model D 9 days ago without ever having tried a rowing machine before. In my day job, I'm an actuarial analyst. I don't need to touch or feel something to decide if it's right for me. For example, I usually pick out the vehicle I'm going to buy based on Consumer Reports and other similar resources without feeling the need to test drive the vehicle. (My wife and I have matching silver Honda Pilot and Ridgeline. I recommend either if anyone is in the market.) So, I did my research on different types of exercise equipment. I've spent a fair amount of time on exercise bikes and treadmills in the past. I've tried ellipticals a couple times, but I hate them. Being so heavy, I basically needed a commercial quality piece of equipment. I figured if I only had the space and money for one piece of equipment, I needed something that I could get a full body workout. I decided that a rowing machine seemed like a good option. While reading a review of a LifeCore machine, (a brand I was familiar with), someone mentioned that the Concept 2 machine was superior. So, I did some research on Concept 2. Based upon my expectation of the workout, the price, the weight capacity of the machine, and the reputation of the company, the Model D seemed to be the perfect pick. I'm a person that trusts my research especially when I can find quite a few reviews by people who actually own a product.
My first experience rowing on the machine was great. I could only go 5 minutes, but I liked how smooth it was. Today, is my first day I've been able to force myself to not workout. I've gone at least once a day since the day it arrived. If you look up my rankings, you'll see that I'm at the 5th percentile in 2 different workouts (30 minute and 5k). I'm guessing the distributions are skewed to the fast side, because people as slow as me are too embarrassed to have their times ranked. Based on current level of fitness (or lack thereof), I'm extremely proud of my times. I feel fortunate that I didn't die of a heart attack while rowing.
Most likely, I will never have a post this long again. I just wanted to introduce myself. More than anything, I'm just excited about rowing. Thank you for letting me apply my meters towards your trip to the moon and the coming challenges this rowing season. Have a great weekend.
Brett

Man, a lot of your story could be mine. There aren't a lot of "Before" pictures of me when I was 6'4" and somewhere well over 300 pounds, but here's one:
I'd fooled around a bit with the Concept 2 Ergometer in the early 80's, but never got really serious about it - too much else going on in my life.
But I re-discovered the Erg, and this fine group of folks, and a few million metres later and here's the "after" pic:
Still 6'4", but close to 200 pounds.
The Erg as a machine is great, but the support these folks have continued to provide has made it possible for me to stick with it.
I, too, quit smoking, started eating right and now just feel a whole lot better.
You can do it, too. And we are here to help
Keep us posted, Brett!

Hi,Brett. Welcome to team Lunatics. I enjoyed reading your post ... it allowed me to put off starting my evening's row by several minutes ... and your "feel fortunate" observation made me laugh.
