Kicking Off the Canoeing Season

Post by DuluthMoose » May 7th, 2010, 8:12 am

I got my canoe trailer checked out and loaded yesterday and ready to go. Today I focus on checking out camping gear and packing that. It will be a good day to do that with 1-3 inches of the white stuff expected. Snow is amazing stuff. But have you ever wondered where the white color goes when the stuff melts? So just a few more days of rowing for me and then I'll be heading out for a week or so to do some day trip paddling on the Current River in the Missouri Ozarks with some paddling friends. We will set up a base camp at one of the Ozark National Scenic River Waterways campgrounds, and post daily shuttles from there. Sounds like it will be a little rainy with isolated thunderstorms most every day down there, but no chance of snow there with highs near 80F every day. And actually a little rain to keep the river from getting too low is a good thing. "You rolling old river. You changing old river. Lets you and me river go down to the sea." Moose

All sounds good Moose....I've been using a 'Cross-Fire Bivvy bag" for camping in recent times, but I've been looking at Hennessy Hammocks (USA) ideal for hiking and canoeing.....what are you using?

No rowing yesterday....pulled up a little sore after weight training on Thursday.......
Enjoy the weekend...BBB

This being a drive into a base camp situation, it's luxury camp time for me. So I pop the middle seats out of my Toyota Sienna minivan, put a 1.5" foam pad down on the floor, then a futon mattress over the foam, and then my great big flannel sleeping bag with a full size pillow, put some custom made screens in a couple windows, and custom made curtains all around; and sleep in the back of the van. Let it storm outside! I take an old tent along for a place to store my ton and a half of gear, and a big tarp to cover the picnic table and cooking area, and some big, comfortable folding chairs complete with cupholders along. If I had more time to cook this trip the 20 lb dutch oven and tripod would be coming along as well. But I know there will be late days on the river, so the white gas stove, my usual lightweight cook kit, and something quick to cook will be along on this trip.

But I suspect you wanted to know what I'm carrying when I'm traveling light for many days in the back country. I'm usually with a small group, so it's almost always sharing a tent with someone. For 2 people, I want a 3 or 4 person tent for any trip over about 3 nights out. And most of my trips are 7 to 10 days. For lake travel with portages, I'm using a MSR Mutha Hubba 3 person tent, which is tall enough to sit up in and big enough for 2 people to have plenty of room. This tent weighs in at about 7 lbs, so its about the lightest 3 person available. For river travel or somewhere where high winds can be expected I use a Eureka Mountainpass 3XTC tent. It's another 3 person, a little heavier tent but will be standing after heavy wind. For canoeing I use synthetic bags that stuff down to the smallest possible volume and something rated to about 32F. I've spent far too many nights in wet down bags from about day 4 to the end of the trip on day 9 or 10, for my liking. No question down is the lightest, but they don't mix with water sports very well.

I know solo canoeists that swear by their Hennessey Hammocks. I've never tried one, but they say they are comfortable. I've also heard they can start swaying in even moderate wind, so if motion sickness is a problem you need to anchor them to the ground. And there is also the standing joke that they provide hours of entertainment for the bears; kind of like a campsite pinata for them. But I guess that's something you wouldn't have to worry about.

Yikes....I'd go car camping too...I'll bet you tell scary camp stories, too, Moose....

33 teammates in the boat! Welcome back Steve D.!

Image Meanwhile, literally back at the ranch, there's another outdoor adventure taking place near Craig, CO tomorrow. Every year about 700 horses are wintered on the range near Craig - recovering from all their summer tourist rides. These horses are then part of the Great American Horse Drive as they are gathered from the range and then moved 61 miles from pasture in Brown's Park back to the Sombrero Ranch outside of Craig. Tomorrow these horses will move through the town of Maybell...a journey across Hwy 40 that takes maybe 5 minutes....sometime between 8 AM - 1 PM. Timing might be everything ...here's a photo from the Craig Daily Press last year:

Season meters as of 7/365 = 1,310,746 m

Total meters on the day = 166,472 m

Image Half moon for Baz with 32,154 m
Image Half moon for Bart with 25,000 m

And thanks to all today's crew for all the kinds of meters:

Barbara 5,617 m (good luck with the upcoming surgery...and do stay tuned to the forum even if you can't row for awhile)
Noelle 6,611 m great job...keep rowing!

Moose, I have paddled the Current river many times. Great river. Come down a little further and try the Buffalo here in Arkansas. It is a lot of fun when the water is high. I have also tried canoeing Lake Superior near Ontonagon, my favorite place. Kind of rough. Got a wee bit seasick.
Have a great time

BrotherJim - I have paddled the upper Buffalo (Ponca down for about 50 miles) in pretty high water conditions. It was a blast with all the class 2 water. But I was too busy trying to keep the open side of my canoe up, to really take in all the high bluff gorgeous scenery. I need to do the Buffalo again someday. But not this trip, I need to get back and get my garden going. So many rivers, so little time.... Moose
