Those are the lines I was thinking along, but mine turned out to be a lot longer row, since I use WAY fewer calories per mile running flat. According to my HRM, I burn about 75-80/mile.CONLEJM wrote:Hi Izzzy, let me try to figure it out. I rowed a HM today, and my weight-adjusted calories burned were 1,586.8. So in theory if I maintained the same pace throughout I would burn twice this doing a FM, or 3,173.6 calories. (But I couldn't maintain this pace, so it would be somewhat less).Izzzmeister wrote:According to my Brainiac calculations (if I told you how I calculated this, I'd have to kill you), a running marathon is the equivalent of about a 55K row.
According to a 2004 Runner's World article, "How Many Calories Are You Really Burning?" Amby Burfoot offers a synopsis of the ACSM energy expenditure equation. At speeds of 5 mph (12-minute miles) and faster, multiply your weight by 0.75 to estimate total calories burned per mile.
Therefore a 26.2 mile marathon for me would burn (for my 100kg weight) 4,323 calories.
So I compare the 4,323 calories I burn in a road marathon to the 3,173.6 calories I burn in a rowing marathon and get a factor of 1.362 and change. I then apply this factor to the 42,195 meters of the rowing marathon and get about 57,477 meters that I would have to row to burn 4,323 calories.
The difference between the 55K you calculate and the 57.5K I calculate is probably due to my first assumption of maintaining the HM pace for the FM. Or maybe you used a different formula for calculating calories burned while jogging. Or maybe you used a better method altogether. But I like these kinds of puzzles.
Thanks!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Well, team, it's a happy day... We finished the challenge with a bang! Our final total (though more meters may come dribbling in) is now 10,941,785 meters, or 6,801 miles!! Truly an outstanding effort by everyone. We did have enough of a final push to make it to port in the Bahamas!!
Our trip was simply amazing, across the continental US and BACK! I really thought it was crazy when Izz gave us the goal of 10,000,000 meters and I first mapped it out. Absolutely nuts. We can NEVER do that, I thought.
But we DID!!!!
Now for some really well-deserved rest for us all, on the pristine white shores of the Bahamas, and to start thinking about where we should travel next.... Maybe go visit Tyrone down under for a tour of Australia? Hmmmm......

Jeez-stay off the site for a day and there's a whole bunch to catch up on. Only did 6k and change last night-didn't feel well. Still, 4th place ain't bad I am quite happy that I actually doubled my goal-it was tough, but worth it. Chasing birds makes it easier I would have liked to do more but....
Hey Heather- Use my bird pic For You??? No problem -I'll get a nicer pic and email it to you. And the gym thing is nice. I live out in the sticks-very few neighbors, and work out of my place, so I spend WAY too much time alone (nothing like spending too much time alone with a madman ), so it's a good way to get me around humans.

Very interesting! Setting public goals really works. Good addition to the system, Izz!Izzzmeister wrote:

I do something similar with my calorie tracking and it really does have an affect on my behavior, knowing I need to post results. It's much harder to let something slide when you've made a public commitment to it and have to report progress to a group.
