Hey Tyrone...you don't want to hear what I was saying about you every single day for a while there! My wife kept saying "are you nuts? Why do you have to do those crazy distances?", to which I would always answer something that started with grumbling and ended with the name "Tyrone" B)

Seriously, trying to keep up with your rows was one of the things that kept me going waaaaaay further than I ever expected to this month. I did 150k or so in the Holiday Challenge, committed to 160k for this one, discovered that 250k was going to be doable, and thanks to you I ended up clearing 400k. Never would have happened without the encouragement and friendly competition...good on ya.

Nah...this is the cool-down row for the end of the challenge. I've already gone past the magic number I was shooting for, at this point I'm going to relax and enjoy the scenery (which for some reason always looks the same on RP!).

How about it...any other RowPro drivers out there willing to join in? Come on in...the water's fine! (trust me :))

I had that sense that you were starting to struggle mentally around 275K. - I knew you could make it to 35OK - but well done for making 400+ - there has been a bit of chat about why we are doing these distances but for me it is all about my fitness base for the rest of the year. I've got three boys 15,12,11 who need a leader for fitness and lifestyle - they are starting to get it. Hopefully a couple will join up for the next challenge. Now we can back off a bit and concentrate on other things. Keep up the fitness and we will lock heads on the next challenge :D Tyrone

C'mon, Smitty, less than 2k for you to go to hit 550k!! You gonna let Heather snow you by over 50k? And 6862 gets you back into 3rd place!!!

Hey Tyrone, as with Glen, you pushed me on to bigger numbers as well. Both you and Glen pushed me, actually. But as Lee Iaccocca once said: "you either lead, follow, or get out of the way". Eventually I just got out of your way! No messing with the Thunder from Down Under!

Your sons are very fortunate to have such a great role model. Well done!

Cheers!

Wow! How those numbers change when you don't log in for awhile--my son's 25th birthday took up the last three days in one way or another. Well done everyone--but I'm done too. In fact, when my Christmas challenge pin arrived yesterday, I think I was more excited about the bubble wrap; rip open the envelope and it's just the right size for the erg seat--be be used tomorrow. Or Thursday. I deserve a rest, along with everyone else.

Congratulations on using the gym membership, Mark; it's so much easier to stay at home and row, isn't it? But, you'll be surprised at the results if you keep at it. New friendships, too.

Good luck for those rowing in tonight's RowPro TimbukTwo Fest--says she, smiling at her old machine with its low-tech monitor making it impossible for her to join in. I'm too tired, but no doubt I would push myself. 600K in one month is just crazy; but I think this was the last challenge I'll be able to reach or keep #2 position for very long. We'll just have to wait and see, won't we? :D

Good luck on the military challenge David; save some for TimbukTwo and the World Erg challenge March 15 - April 15 (I'm assuming we're joining in ??).

Well done everyone! And thank you Lisa for the tour map along the way; It was neat to see all those images along the way.

Dang! I thought you must be mistaken when you said you'd have to change Affiliations for February to join the Military Challenge, but you're right. Not sure why they have to do it that way, instead of making a new classification for Military Affiliation. Guess every team will be losing some of their top rowers for at least a month.
Just don't get too comfortable over there, David!

You mean a little hummingbird gets to be number 1 for a whole 28 days? :o :o :o Or rather, incite the big dogs to chase her down? Time out for a little snoopy dance!

Hey Mark: can I use your iron hummingbird as my avatar for February, please oh please, pretty please with maple syrup and a cherry on top????

Izzzmeister wrote:According to my Brainiac calculations (if I told you how I calculated this, I'd have to kill you), a running marathon is the equivalent of about a 55K row.
Hi Izzzy, let me try to figure it out. I rowed a HM today, and my weight-adjusted calories burned were 1,586.8. So in theory if I maintained the same pace throughout I would burn twice this doing a FM, or 3,173.6 calories. (But I couldn't maintain this pace, so it would be somewhat less).

According to a 2004 Runner's World article, "How Many Calories Are You Really Burning?" Amby Burfoot offers a synopsis of the ACSM energy expenditure equation. At speeds of 5 mph (12-minute miles) and faster, multiply your weight by 0.75 to estimate total calories burned per mile.

Therefore a 26.2 mile marathon for me would burn (for my 100kg weight) 4,323 calories.

So I compare the 4,323 calories I burn in a road marathon to the 3,173.6 calories I burn in a rowing marathon and get a factor of 1.362 and change. I then apply this factor to the 42,195 meters of the rowing marathon and get about 57,477 meters that I would have to row to burn 4,323 calories.

The difference between the 55K you calculate and the 57.5K I calculate is probably due to my first assumption of maintaining the HM pace for the FM. Or maybe you used a different formula for calculating calories burned while jogging. Or maybe you used a better method altogether. But I like these kinds of puzzles.

Thanks!
