Good idea, leftcoaster. Fill boats for the Flyers, push yourself just that little bit extra, or best of all, BOTH! Jack

Yes welcome indeed left coaster - I wondered where the new entry had come from. It is a good session and the second time will definitely be better now that you have a feel for it.
The beauty of the CTC is that each month is so different.

Hi Lindsayh,
I'm a bit fuzzy on the challenge rules, can I keep updating my time as the month progresses? My splits were rather inconsistent and I should be able to do better in a couple weeks.

In terms of my stats, do I enter them on the team page somewhere? I'm 45, 6'1" and about 235lbs. As I've mentioned in other posts, I've been relatively inactive for a number of years following several injuries in my 30's. Partially torn Achilles, crushed AC joint and then a protruded cervical disc all a couple years apart. I haven't been in a dojo since and my full suspension mountain bike hasn't left the garage in years. The erg has been a very welcome addition to my exercise routines, a relatively safe way to lay it all out there - very refreshing!

You can do the CTC as many times as you like and just update - you will certainly improve with practice and pacing for ones like this and even pacing works best.
You don't have to post your stats anywhere really - I am just a little "nosy" and its just nice to know a little more so that advice makes more sense and we get to know each other a little in this slightly weird virtual world. What is your first name? Are you based in the US?
The erg is indeed a very safe and effective training tool especially with your injury story.

Hey Again,

My first name is Tim. I live in Victoria, BC, Canada. We have a well established rowing community here that regularly trains on a placid ocean inlet and on a nearby lake. There is also an outfit that rents little ocean going row boats, one or two person, that have sliding seats and swiveling oars. A buddy of mine is a member at this club and has offered to take me out. I guess he is 'certified' to 'safety train' me in these little boats, although he chuckles about this as there isn't a formal process. He rowed in college, so I guess they think he's good-to-go. I understand they are deeper hulled craft, big enough to pack a day's worth of picnic supplies, and the wife, in and to chug out to some of the little islands in our area.

There is also an abundance of kayakers around. I've tried kayaking a few times and didn't get the hang of righting myself from being upside down in the water. I don't do a lot of swimming and seemed to get a little too stressed out. Ocean kayaking just looks like a boring thing to do and the back and forth motion of the little boats grinds on my lower back. There are lots of guys around who use river kayaks in the ocean surf though, and that looks to be right up my alley, as does river kayaking You know, something a fella should wear a helmet to do  Argh, there I go, getting all excited about high risk sporting activities again  I REALLY want to learn how to kite surf! did 10k today, 42:30, a minute better than my last attempt... slowly it improves.

Same bakatcha, Darren! It's like the six day races--ride, eat, sleep, do it again. Say, how'd you pick your handle, Banjo? Are you a picker, tenor player, other? Jack

Hallo Henry. Started erging at the local YMCA branch gym 6 May 2014. Just out of cardiac rehab. I had built up to an hour on the treadmill but with diagnosed COPD and metabolic syndrome (euphemism for gluttony and sloth), I figured I'd better wise up and do something to assist the shiny new Chinese finger cuff installed in my coronary artery.

I got a used model D in June '14. Sent a video to this forum for critique. I recall James Gobbett's comment that I didn't look like I could keep up what I was doing for very long. The ashy gray colour and the wheezing must have given the game away?

My best/worst month of meter chasing was the 2015 Virtual Team Challenge (777K meters). Looking back, the words borderline dementia come to mind!

Current overall total 4,493K in 17-1/2 months. I don't maintain the daily challenge average all year. My daily average for this year is just over 8K. I found yours [hjs] to be 7K+ so not a lot of difference.

The challenges are a chance to ramp up and maintain volume for a fixed period of time--hence periodization! At the same time, intensity must be suppressed In order to produce the volume--voila!--polarization. :P

Lunacy? Legitimate training? It can be the latter if a large proportion of the volume is done at or above low aerobic heart rate and pace. The ISS HR zone calculator determines that zone for me. Dag.

I knew roughly about your past but not precisely, so just ask was the idea :D

Overall we differ not much in volume, but this month we do a lot. I myself never make a very high volume, Its to boring for me.  . I settle for a bit less and some slower times. In the spring I did a bit more, including serious weights, it did work, but my body could not cope. The weight L 4 combi was to much.

Dag is used as a goodby greating mostly :D Often the a is kept longer and often its the last greating when you go away and already on your way. From there its Daaaaaag :D

I am glad that clarified that Henry. My first thought was that he was using a new signature. I was concerned that ol' Jack was getting metamorphosed into the comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead, whose neighbor Herb usually refers to him as Dag.
