Yay, Barbara. Enjoy your magnificent million moment!

Heart monitor: Well, that certainly changed the flavor of my workout! In order to get near the upper range of my target rate, I had to work really hard. I did 1000 warm-up, 9000 in target range, and 1000 cool-down ... then decided that was plenty for tonight. Good tool, I look forward to finding out a lot more.

Relaxation: Two co-workers just announced there are summer babies on the way, so I'm starting a couple of "twizzle hats" tonight (the blue ones below were for twins ... they enjoyed gumming the loops) ... maybe I'll then move on to Red Sox hats! (Ah, Bill, 22 years later and I'll bet he still has nightmares about that flub.)

Thanks for the #27 door from Dublin, Dan! You can't read the number in the small avatar, but the original picture is wonderful. Thx again!

Not only has Barbara gone the distance :D ...she also has joined the ranks of the 500m posters!

Me, I'm still posting on the paddle...much like how I row

Apparently our team room is quite popular. I just realized that we've had over 10,000 views. Either there are a lot of lurkers who love our graphics or some of us just can't stay away.

As regards to the heart monitor...if I'm pushing it, I sometimes go a bit over the theoretical maximum. I've been known to reach 175 and I'm 49. 220-49 = 171. Is this safe? I recover fairly fast. Most of the time I'm between 140-150 or 81%-87%. Under 140 I'm not really feeling like I'm working out. My resting HR is about 66 in the morning, 71 during the day.

OK, back to work, clients want taxes done. It's really getting in the way of my ergging.

I'm no heart rate expert, but I use a HR monitor and I'd be cautious about working out above 85% max for any length of time. That said an occasional occurance of up to 175 shouldn't be unsafe, if you are watching the monitor and backing off intensity slightly when rate gets to that point. And everyone is different, you may not even be sucking air (anaerobic) at that 175 HR. My experience is if your heart rate elevates steadily as you increase the intensity of your workout, and you can hold a steady rate when working out for 10 or 15 minutes at or near 85% level, that is a good indication of no problems. But if you experience skipping beats or sudden 10 point spikes or drops in HR when working out for those 10 to 15 minutes at a heavy load, I think you should consult with an expert before continuing to push at that level. Darryl,

You are exactly right. All you rowers heed these warning they are on the money. Anybody above the age of 50-55 should consult a cardiologist and possibly have a stress test before going to these limits and beyond. For those who say why a HR Monitor, this is why.

At 63 this is why I row by the monitor. I am gradually working my way up to upper limits of my max HR. Today I sustained 75% for an hour. I will stay at this level for another month or two. Then go up another 5%.

Doctor Dan,

I just love your little tooth guy. He makes me want to get up and brush my teeth every time I see him! And the cat attack avatar is great too. Is he chewing on your toothbrush or is that his own (please don't say you used your wife's toothbrush for that photo!)

I am not back in the game yet, as I had hoped to be. March Madness has been a wash for me, but I am keeping my eye on the days, and WILL finish my final few meters before the season ends!!!!!!!!!! I am still planning to do a marathon row in the final season challenge. Is anyone else thinking about giving the half or full marathon row a try?

Chris, those hats are the cutest things!

Congratulations on the million, Barbara!

Oh, no pressure, bicycle-girl! (According to my Excel sheet, it's now 8,761/day ... )

Maybe a HM this weekend. I tried erging with shoes tonight (hey, the Aussies erg barefooted, I watched the C2 video!) ... my heels were getting hot spots.

Dan, you could weave Kristine's martial arts, and ceremonial doves, into the team's patchwork quilt.

We're warp speeding along towards the moon, Luna-Tics! Good rowing yesterday! Today we should hit FORTY Million Meters as a team! Who would have thunk it! That's 9 million in the last 40 days! And, now that we are super motivated by the NARC.....what do you think about trying to hit 50 million by season end!??? That would 10 million meters in 35 days.....or averaging 290K per day as a team.....

While you all ponder that outrageous thought....

Season meters to date = 39,955,202 m

Total meters on the day = 181,887 m

30 percent of the oars in spatial waters

Dan with (191,292 m) to go! He's cracked the 200K barrier!
Tim with (259,293 m) to go!
Chris with (307,344 m) to go!
