Challenges
Summer Solstice Row 2008
June 21, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 5th Annual Solstice Challenge will take place on Saturday, June 21. On that date, the longest day of the year, we challenge you to row 21,000 meters, on the water or on the Indoor Rower, to celebrate the solstice. The meters can be accrued from several workouts throughout the day or from one long workout. While you're at it, you may just as well row an additional 97 meters and make it an official half-marathon of 21,097 meters (the half-marathon does have to be rowed in one sitting, small breaks are allowed, but the rest time needs to be included in the final time for ranking).
Incentives:
Name inclusion on the Summer Solstice Challenge Honor Boards
A specially designed downloadable certificate

Question on the half marathon
Hi Pat and crew!
I am planning on doing the 21,000 meters this coming Saturday for the Solstice row, yet am thinking about just going ahead and adding the 97 additional meters (per your suggestion, Pat!). How would I record the breaks in the logbook?? Is there a limit as to how many are allowed??
It will probably be a miracle if I can get this done and still move afterwards, yet I am wanting to try! Any advice/help/etc. would be most appreciated.
Thanks much!
Alison

I might add here that if you are not interested in the ranking portion of this challenge..you can take as many breaks as you wish and row as many segments to get the total as you wish. The goal is to row the 21,000 meters but doesn't necessarily have to be done all at once..unless you want to rank it.I don't always rank my rows..they are not always worthy

Let me see if I have this correct also. I was thinking about trying to row the half but rowing for over 2 hours for me will not happen at this time. I do good if I row for an hour. So if I row 10,000 meters at 10 in the morning and then row 7000 at 1pm and then another 5000 at 5 pm then I put the time in for the 21000 at 7 hours total. Or does logging it in at different times during the day allow for the time differences.

I am not sure if I understand you completely but I might
The only way that you would show time differences or a discrepancy is if you "ranked" your workout. You can row this 21000 meters in any way you wish..when you log each "leg" of the challenge the log in page will add them cumulatively for the whole day.You can row 10,000 at one time, 5000 another etc..log each session and when you reach the 21,000 or half marathon it will show up as that amount. Some challenges want you to only row the set amount that is given to be placed on the honor board.I am not sure that this is the case but watch the honor board as other rowers log and you will see.Ranking is the only glitch..you need to have your times correctly logged to get ranked but you don't have to rank this challenge or any challenge.I haven't ranked til just the past few months and I have logged millions of meters.I was too embarrassed to show my times.I am not the fastest rower in the virtual waters. I hope I have helped you.

Great!!
That is what I plan on doing.I am not a big fan of sitting for 2 hours straight.I have done it but it is not my favorite thing to do.I love to row..but on my terms.. I try to get as much as I can from my workouts without overdoing so as not to get an overuse injury.A few years ago I did way too much and had to get my hands back in shape..
Have fun!!

I know what you mean about the hands. I have started wearing some gloves I bought for windsurfing as I am building calasuses (shoot how do you spell that) up pretty fast but mostly on my left hand and just the 2 middle fingers. I most be using it a lot different than my right as it barely has any.
