I really wanted to take Sunday off, but I was reading this article about the importance of stretching after your warmup. I couldn't think of a better warmup than the rower. However, I'm still not sold on stretching. I'll give it a shot for a few weeks.Izzzmeister wrote:Andy I - 1,563 Quatroux almost cinq!
I did have a PB time on the 10k on Saturday, but still no meters like David W, John S , Yisroel H, and such. I know those three don't row at my YMCA.

Re: stretching... For running at least, I tend to agree with what I read about static stretching being a bad idea for cold muscles. I have a dynamic stretching routine I follow before a run, then do static stretches afterward, when everything's all nice and warm. I don't do any stretches before rowing, and only with the greatest of discipline do I do anything after. Since the rower is at home, I get sucked into doing chores or starting dinner instead of stretching. There's something to be said for using the rower at the Y!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I don't stretch before or after. I do a slow warmup for 5 minutes. Probably should stretch before and after with thee aftermath of spinal surgery on my body The Doc that did my surgery thinks I'm out of my mind. He found out how much I routinely lift during my work day and was adamant that I find a "less strenuous" form of work. Yeah,right-what can I switch to at my age (even if I wanted to-being an Artist is all I want to do anyway).

This begs the question, how much weight DO you lift during your work day?The Blacksmith wrote: He found out how much I routinely lift during my work day and was adamant that I find a "less strenuous" form of work.
Capturing meters a tad early today... Off to Zion National Park tomorrow. Hoping my hubby is in good enough shape to make it up to Observation Point (2100' gain). Wheeeee!!!!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
It all depends on the size of the project. For instance, I've built 40 foot rails (8'-10' foot sections) by myself-each section weighed 250 or so lbs. When I put it together you weld up one side first-then the fun part is flipping it to do the other side-with no overhead crane in the shop Then get it out to and on to the truck. Then install it in the house without dinging floors and walls- I usually hire help to move them in the home-too easy to create lots of damage with moving a long heavy rail.
REALLY nice picture, by the way

Holy cow!! Well, that would certainly explain the back trouble!!
That will be our view from Observation Point if we make it. I can't claim the photo -- I just google for images and inject them into my posts. (I did photoshop the coxswain with the cake one though...)
Have a great week, everyone!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
This is an invitation to all TimbukTOOers who want to improve their speed to join me in some serious training. This will last 12 weeks, and should improve your 2K times about 1 second per week (but that will depend on how close to your potential you‘re rowing now). It will be based on “The Pete Plan” (http://thepeteplan.wordpress.com/the-pete-plan/), though I must admit I’ll be modifying it for myself.
Some notes:
1) I don’t recommend you jump more than one workout per week. So, if you were doing 3 a week, don’t do more than 4, etc. If you were rowing daily, try not to do more than one hard day in a row - so, if you did speed work one day, follow it with a slower “long and steady” session the next. (Consider a very long & steady session a hard day.) Closer to race season, you may want to do 2 or three hard days followed by a day of complete rest.
2) If you’re relatively new to rowing, start with Pete’s plan for beginners (click “Beginner Training” at the above blogsite). Your body can handle amazing amounts of stress - but you have to build up to it.
3) Pete Marston’s plan lacks 2 aspects - strength training & stroke “rating.” The best thing would be if you could lift weights twice a week, and twice a week practice explosive but even strokes with long recovery in between. However, we don’t all have that much time & energy. Pete’s Plan will work without those aspects, and there are some reasonable alternatives…
4) Please post your times and improvements to the Affiliation thread. Keep the posts short: Times, improvement, perhaps a comment. If you don’t feel like posting, please drop me a line with your times.
5) The 12 weeks will put you on the cusp of racing season. You may choose to pick up a local race listed on the C2 website (http://www.concept2.com/us/racing/calendar/default.asp) , or to buy RowPro and race virtually against people around the world. And there’s always the CRASH-B’s…
Any takers?
