Hi all

Last call for votes for the August CTC. I'll take my snapshot tomorrow morning, so hoping we can get a couple more votes in today. There are 2 choices currently deadlocked for top spot, so you have a chance to make it democratic and don't make me resort to a coin toss!

Cheers

Dave I think I like the 4x 505/2'R with slowest to count best.

Thanks Lindsay. That's a very helpful vote :).

Yes, we've had a few votes over on Facebook, and in total 15 votes across the 2 places. Thanks to all those who participated.

It was a close one in the end, and we were deadlocked for most of last week, but I'm happy to announce the choice will be the 4 x 505m (2 min rest) - slowest interval to count.

The final voting:

Code: Select all

Votes	Proposal
5	4 x 505m (2 min rest) - slowest interval to count
4	20 min (rate capped at 20spm)
3	500m
2	4 x 150m (3 min rest) - fastest and slowest intervals count
1	20 x 202m (20 secs rest)
0	4 x 750m (2 min rest)
0	8 x 888m (2 min rest)
0	10 x 202m (20 secs rest)
Might be worth having a mini team challenge some time with the other proposals. Will give that some thought in the coming months.

And be ready for more than one attempt to get your pacing right! Aiming to get my first stake in the ground done tomorrow.

I finally got around to the July challenge last night, and glad I did, because combined with Martin FF's entry we've managed to get 5 boats floated, with no-one waiting on the dock. Well done all!

Wow! Didn't expect a late flurry when I sent my last message. I guess I wasn't the only one avoiding the challenge until the end, given its similarity to a 2k!

Interesting challenge this month (which is why we chose it!). Just finished. The first 505 is the key. If you go too fast...at a pace you can’t hold for the other 3 pieces...you just waste energy. If you go too slow, you lock yourself into a slower time for the challenge. But seems better to take some risk on #1...gives you a target for the other 3 pieces...you “just” have to hold on. My slowest time was my first piece at time of 1:51.1 and at 1:50.0 pace; I held on for the other 3 pieces.

1- 1:51.1 / 1:50.0
2- 1:51.1 / 1:50.0
3- 1:51.0 / 1:49.9
4- 1:51.0 / 1:49.9

I might have been able to go a little faster on #2 and #3, but did not have much left on #4. I don’t do many timed 500’s, but for reference my PB is 1:47.7.

So my slowest pace was 2.3 sec off my PB. It would be good if others could share this delta, as a reference to help other team members decide their target pace. Good luck to all.

That's some good planning there, Marc. If you felt like there was nothing left on number 4, and your pacing was so flat, then I think you've nailed it perfectly.

I did my first one tonight, and suspected that I was being conservative by targeting 1 second pace faster than last month's 2km. Was a bit of a spontaneous attempt - had just finished a beer and thrown something in the oven, so had 30 minutes to warm up and get the CTC done.

First interval was my slowest at 2:00.1, and then I followed it with 1:59.3, 1:58.5 and 1:56.3. There was a little left at the end, so I think my next attempt will probably target 1:58 as a start, and see how it feels.

I had hoped we'd chosen a straightforward enough challenge, but it seems some people have managed to misinterpret what needs to be entered. Oh well, the 20 spm cap of the other choice would have probably triggered more issues.

I actually had a false start on this challenge yesterday. I put up a reasonable time on piece #1 (similar to today’s pace) but half through piece #2, and I was blowing up and I had to stop...no way I could come close to hanging on to my pace. Something was not right. My heart rate had never fully recovered before starting piece #2. Then it are stuck me that I had programmed only 1 minute rest between the 505 pieces! I am certainly glad we went with the 2 minute rest breaks...as 1 minute rest would be an entire different (and painful) game!

Think there is little relation with a flat out 500. More with 2k pace. Think you can roughly look at 2k pace minus 3.

Re your 147.7 pb. Thats low hanging fruit, you could distroy that. Would expect at least 10 seconds below this months ctc, and 15 seconds seems also possible.

hjs- Thanks for the comments. Yes, it does seem based on this month’s CTC, I should be able to better my flat out 500 PB. I have not done one of those in a while; sounds like I should try again. My PB in 2K is 1:55.9. So in this month’s CTC, my pace was about 6 sec below by 2K PB.

Cheers Marc, not saying you should do a 500, only that you could.

Also think that your 2k is not sharp at 155.9 ready also to better.

A pretty ok way of looking at the ctc is to see how people do relative to other ctc s. And or look at how people do who are around you in pace on other ctc’s. In the beginning people tend to set a feeler and later on in the month set a more serious time.
