Add some skis, and you've got some Birkie practice!
Thanks for that Kona - all four of my grandparents were Dutch!
As another Dykstra, all four of mine were as well. Do you happen to have family in Northwest Iowa?
I have family in Northwest Iowa with the last name of Dykstra. My Grandpa's sister married a Dykstra. They lived in Hull, IA. Her son lives in Sioux City, IA.

I wonder if we have any relatives in common? I have family from Rock Valley and Orange City IA. Hull is right on the route between those two towns, so I've been through it a few times before.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we had cousins that were cousins.

I've looked at RAGBRAI the Birkie races. All that stuff looks fun. Once the world gets back to normal I'd love to do something like that. I've run 1 5k in my life and have done something like a Tough Mudder once. That's my entire list of competitions. Being competitive isn't even on my radar. I would just love to train for and participate in something.

I'm with you. I did a good number of running races in years gone by - from sprints up Devil's Kiitchen (the NY version, and deliberate typo since that's a forbidden word) to a marathon - only one of those (but several half-marathons) before I had to hang up my running shoes. Almost feels like someone else's memories now, but I think reading about RAGBRAI and the Birkie has planted a seed ...

My branch of the Dykstra clan settled in Northwest Illinois. Of the 23 grandchildren on the paternal side of the family I don't know of any who ventured to NW Iowa. HOWEVER... if you go over to the maternal side (different last name though equally Dutch), there are 54 grandchildren, and some of them are in Northwest Iowa, including Sioux City. So we probably have some intersection somewhere in the family trees. Small world indeed!

I've done a few marathons, a couple of small triathlons, and a ton of 10k/5k road races. All of them recreationally. I still do 5k's occasionally but I have to be careful because -like a lot of older runners- I've got some knee issues. I like collecting the race T-shirts and even an age division medal/ribbon from time to time, but what I really enjoy is the social aspect of small town fun runs. There are a handful of people I see at races from week to week and even year to year. Of course, this last year all of that has gone by the wayside. Hopefully we'll all get back to it in 2021.

Many amazing achievements happening in team Luna-tics, so congratulations to all...!

And on snow, I've been seeing some of the North American weather on the local news and can't believe the sheer volume of snow. Mind you, I grew up in the Northern Australian Tropics and hadn't even seen snow until I was in my late twenties. And I'm sure I must be the only person on the planet who has never skied...

Having said that, I've been looking at the ski-erg as it looks to provide a great workout - what do you reckon?

Overcast and storms for the Harbour City today, but a pleasant 25 degrees this morning, just "tossing up" whether to get out on the water (Narrabeen Lake on Sydney's northern beaches) or head to the "shed" to the rowing erg... Cheers, Baz B)

Here we are, continuing to hurdle through time and space...what a strange time it is, too! While I know it to be true that Sydney, Australia is enjoying some wonderfully temperate weather, Baz brings that reality into focus with choices of kayaking on the lake or erging in The Shed! And 25 C vs 25 F (which is what this location shows currently)...practically balmy!
