Swapped pedals today - it feels like a bearing is going out in my left pedal. It's not like I'm going to be riding my road bike, so it made a donation to the cause!

Edit: not the pedals. Something in the drive train of the BikeErg is clunking. Perfect timing!
Oh yes, the dreaded drive train clunk! Are your pedal cranks attached with one screw (older version) or two?

Two. I checked and everything seems tight. It's a new problem, but boy howdy is it driving me insane! It's always the left crank arm, and always just before the arm is perpendicular to the ground.

This is one to call in to the Concept2 people. Several bike erg owners have experienced this. Sometimes they have to swap out crank arms, and in Warnie’s case (Miles from UK) seems like practically a new machine. Please fill us in with what they think may be cause/solution offered when you find out!

If anybody has heard the "clunk" before, is that the typical sound?

Catching up on Luna-tic happenings and news, and good luck to all in the challenge. Whilst the weather is good I'm getting out on the water...!

And the water is the place to be in the Harbour City today, mid morning and quickly heading towards 40 degrees - I recorded 45 degrees plus in "The Shed" yesterday whilst doing weight training.

Good luck out there and stay safe in this COVID world we are currently living in...! Cheers, Baz B)

It does, thanks. That description lines up closely with what's intermittently happening here. I sent C2 an email about the problem.

I'm going to have to suck it up for 8 more days, then I can light the BikeErg on fire and go back to rowing.

... I might have some Stockholm Syndrome going on here.

That is not a typical sound. When I first purchased my BikeErg, I encountered that sound shortly before the internal belts delaminated, or jumped off their pulleys, or something catastrophic which caused it to seize up - pedals jammed. I could loosen them up temporarily, and only partially, by pedaling backwards for a few revs. I called C2 Support, explained the problem, and they sent me a whole new bike at no charge - I was back in business in a couple of days and never had that problem again.

Subsequent to that first catastrophic failure (which sounds to me similar to the sound bite you posted) I experienced a different "thunk" sound which turned out to be caused by the design of the pedal cranks - they were the Gen 1 single small screw on the spline shaft. Again, I called C2 Support and they sent me a redesigned set of cranks with a single large screw. This has been working well for over a million meters, so I'm happy that it is fixed.

The only reason I am rehashing the pedal crank issue is to assure you that I know the difference between a pedal crank "thunk" and the noise you posted - they sound very different to me. The sound you posted sounds to me like a drive belt is delaminating and is striking the inner surface of the main housing.

Hope C2 Support can get you sorted in short order.

Bill,

It sounds like you've had an adventure with your BikeErg! Thank you for your detailed reply, I appreciate you explaining your experiences.

I wanted to take the bottom cover off to see if there was anything obviously wrong, but even with the screws out it didn't want to easily budge. Rather than force it, I put the screws back in. I'll defer to Concept2 on this until they demonstrate that they can't help me - though it sounds like I'll be in good hands.

Did you ship your defective unit back after receiving the new parts from Concept2?

Is the VTC stats page borked for everybody, or just me? I haven't been able to get it to work all morning.

Edit: checked it from a few locations around the world, it's fubar.

Yes. C2 shipped me a brand new bottom assembly. I had to take the handlebars and legs off my original unit and re-assemble them on the new unit. Old unit went into a prepaid UPS shipping box which UPS picked up at my door the next day. The whole operation was painless and free of charge.

Hello Lunies

Quick question, how much is a used Model D worth? It is in good shape, 10 million mieters and it has a PM5?

Thanks in advance.
