It still says that having the discipline to erg every day is hard, and it's even MORE challenging when you have to hit a specific meter number to stay in the hunt...yet it's made easier when you're part of team. We're getting pretty close to our usual line in the sand, the one where Lunies say "we will FINISH this Challenge". That number is in the 30s for the 5K participants, and 19-23 in the 10K participants. This year, for reasons we have all around us at this time, might be different.

Some of you are old enough to have been around during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. My family was stationed at an Army base south of Fairbanks, AK during that time. We'd been in Alaska for a couple of years then and were somewhat used to the lack of availability of fresh eggs, and fresh fruits and vegetables. (Naturally the food supply chain is much improved now!) But during that week of the Missile Crisis, things were very different.

All the base housing had basements because you had to dig foundations below the frost line. Housing was in multiples of 8 family units per building. Daylight hours are pretty limited in AK during the winter, so we were all used to playing in the basement - and using the central shelving units where these metal boxes called rocket boxes were stacked as a point to roller skate around on the cement flooring. This roller skating drowned out a lot of the early saxophone lessons of the kid next door.

The rocket boxes held C rations - the infamous sustainable but not tasty food stuffs for emergencies. During the Crisis, our parents had to attend drills. We weren't allowed outside much. We couldn't see Russia, but it was close. Some of what we are experiencing now, the Zombie Apocalypse at the grocery stores, and the tension of perhaps unspoken fears reminds me of that time of rocket boxes. We skated many laps...just as we will erg many laps during this time as we work to keep our minds off things we can't control and do the things we can to keep ourselves healthy. It is a good time to have virtual friends with a common interest - and a sport we can pursue in solitary fashion...yet connected to many.
