An update: the skunk always wins...

It was an event that you absolutely knew could happen, hoped wouldn't happen - but in fact DID happen is an opening line that could relate to MANY, many kinds of things. In this case, I'm continuing on about the noxious skunking. Some positive outcomes always can be found, and I was sure looking for some. The first thing is that if you live in an area where Pepe the skunk aromas have been detected, and you have curious pets...you better be prepared. Speed of response is really important. So, no...you don't have time to after the fact order your skunk deodorizer online or run to the pet store...or even worse, consider driving your canine friend and defender to the dog wash. Horrors. I've kept a "kit" in the garage for many years. It consists of some kind of pet friendly skunk odor eliminator, nitrile gloves for you to handle the dog and wash the dog, some baby shampoo for the dog's face...because they don't get sprayed in the butt. I now have added a second skunk odor eliminator to the stable - and in my determination to stay supportive of local small businesses - I found a great carpet cleaner guy with reasonable prices. I'm now working with neighbors to see what we can do to encourage Mama Skunk to move on to another neighborhood...without harming her.

Sounds terrible Jan. We have lots of skunks around here but haven't had the problems you're having. Sounds like you're becoming quite an expert on this type of situation.

The Lunies use the symbol above as our orbiter class of ergers. We have a surprising number of Lunies who have erged enough meters to orbit the earth. Our orbiters are David A (has orbited twice!), Ed, Ron, Minnie, bg, and Danno. David A credits completing all the Concept2 Challenges over his many years of rowing for his meter accumulation. Ed might well give credit to an almost off-planet duty station. However you look at the orbiters' meter accomplishments, it's a lot of time at the erg!

Today though, as you perhaps contemplate how you will work the number 29 into your daily meters for tomorrow, we're calling attention to that 365 day and 6 hr orbit that the Earth has around the sun...the orbit that needs a calendar course correct every four years.

And speaking of orbits, danwho pointed out the existence of a mini-Moon to me. Seems that we've temporarily pulled an asteroid into our gravity well....extra! extra! Read all about it! https://www.cnet.com/news/astronomers-s ... -2020-cd3/

One of the things that was particularly cool about this mini moon discovery was that it was done by the Catalina Sky Survey Team located out of the University of Arizona in Tucson. From Sky Survey, it was just a short leap (I know...groaner) to Sky Islands. When I lived in Tucson, I would see the term sky islands quite often. Sounds like something out of Avatar, the movie. Intriguing? The US Forest Service defines them: “Sky Islands” are isolated mountain ranges in southeastern Arizona and northern Mexico. Some of the mountains rise more than 6,000 feet above the surrounding desert floor making the lowlands and high peaks drastically different. Plants and animals living in the mountains could never survive in the surrounding deserts. Thus by analogy, the mountains are “islands” surrounded by deserts that are “seas”. Mt. Lemmon, where the Mt Lemmon Sky Center Observatory is located, is one of the sky islands.

Whooooosh! That's the sound of you and your erg flying through ANOTHER month!

March is a two-fer month for Challenge: Mud Season Madness and World Erg Challengess. The individual Challenge of March Mud Season Madness or Mudness is one where you participate at the 5 K or 10 K a day level for at least 25 days over the month. Use your 6 days "off" wisely - or you will find yourself up against the wall without a shamrock ! The progress board will start to look like "and then there were none" as participants slide off towards the end of the month. Then there's the team-basedWorld Erg Challenge...another galactic smackdown contest featuring the various teams in the Concept2 universe! You must sign up to participate in the World Erg Challenge. It only takes a minute, and while the start of the Challenge is two weeks away, there's no time like the present to go ahead and get that sign up taken care of quickly. When in your logbook, scroll across to the Teams heading, then scroll down to where it lists Next Challenge: World Erg Challenge...and sign on...sign on...sign on!

Image Image Mud Season Madness: just a reminder that the pot of gold graphic symbolizes the Lunie 10 K participant level, and the shamrock is our Lunie 5 K level. Some teammates completed March 1 meters due to different time zones - and were already on the progress board...so they get their shamrocks and pots of golds already.

Meanwhile, the Image and Image are a wrap.

Image Congratulations to BigBrett and Jantuut for completing this Challenge! Over 600 people started the Challenge, and just a little under half of them completed it. Not one for the faint of heart.

Image US Navy team has run away with this one, but US Army gave a good effort of chasing the Navy boat down. Of note, BigBrett finished in the top 1 percent of the overall Challenge field over 2,200 participants. Good work!

Nothing says increased participation and more individual meters than the possibility of FREE stuff.

Mud Season Madness:

5,000 m participants 10,089 (up 33 percent) Lunies = 53 (up 21 percent)

10,000 m participants 3,747 (up 32 percent) Lunies = 29 (up 14 percent)
[/color]

PS - the ratio of 5K to 10K participants has held steady for many years.

Mud Season Challenge Incentives and Rewards

Participants who meet the challenge can enjoy:

Prize drawings are held every day from all the people who have done at least 5000 meters (2500 meters for kids and adaptive athletes) that day and entered it in their online logbook. The more days you complete, the more you increase your chances of winning!
On randomly selected days during March, we will draw for an additional prize from those who complete at least 10,000 meters (2500 meters for kids and adaptive athletes).
Prizes vary from day to day, but will include Concept2 clothing, heart rate monitors and some surprises!
Drawings are held at (or soon after) noon each weekday for the previous day *, so be sure to enter your meters promptly! We will post names of winners on the web site.
Hall of Fame—All those who are on-track for at least 5000 meters for at least 25 days during the month of March will be listed in the Mud Season Madness Progress Board and will be able to download a specially designed certificate.
For kids and adaptive athletes, the incentives and rewards go into effect at 2500 meters.

* In my experience, the drawings appear to be held about twice a week...but keep yer eyes on the website!

Mud Season Madness:

5,000 m participants 12,400 Lunies = 55 (up 2)

10,000 m participants 4,666 Lunies = 34 (up 5)

Ten years ago, we still could call the March Mud Season Challenge...March Madness. I put this graph together in 2010, and the trend line is unlikely to change (it's stayed the same for ten years). What is different is that we have twice as many participants across the Concept2 Universe. We also have bike ergs, and skiergs! Good stuff.

I'm A Meter Multi-Millionaire!

Post by Kona2 » March 4th, 2020, 11:10 am

Whoop, whoop and sure didn't think I'd ( K2 ) get here back in September! Happily, I reached TWO million bike erg meters yesterday. The event was not celebrated with too much fanfare, though. My lifetime goal remains to get 20 MM indoor rower meters (I'm at 16.5 MM), and 20 MM bike erg meters (I'm at 3.85 MM).

Wow, a lifetime goal. Reminds me of a Modern Family episode where Phil was freaking out over coming to the end of his lifetime supply of razors that he won on a game show in his youth.

Do you have an easy way of seeing lifetime meters for each erg type? Or are you looking at the number of bikeerg meters for a season and adding them up?

Whoop, whoop and sure didn't think I'd ( K2 ) get here back in September! Happily, I reached TWO million bike erg meters yesterday. The event was not celebrated with too much fanfare, though. My lifetime goal remains to get 20 MM indoor rower meters (I'm at 16.5 MM), and 20 MM bike erg meters (I'm at 3.85 MM).
Congratulations!!!

Oh... I found it ... in https://log.concept2.com/history. Cool. Time to make some lifetime goals.
