It was hard to miss this young hawk landing on the deck railing. What ensued was a stare down between Jesse the cat (safe behind glass) and this newly fledged morph stage red tail hawk that lasted about five minutes. The parent pair has two fledged morphs and they are learning to hunt, but not really sure where they belong. You can hear them calling to each other throughout the neighborhood.

Neat picture & story, especially from behind safety glass if you're the cat. Thanks for sharing :D ! SWW

Image Another episode....bunny trails of the mind!

Image Fireflies in Pennsylvania

Fireflies are like a rite of summer in some locations. At my family's home in Virginia, we would see them throughout the backyard on summer nights. Later, I saw them often over cornfields at night...no longer wanting to catch them. We may have a few in Colorado, but I haven't seen them. But some areas of the world have just the right conditions for a type of beetle that takes the whole firefly thing to a new level...synchronized lighting. This thought process all started with an email from Field Notes. Field Notes, a brand of pocket notebooks I get, has come out with a National Parks summer edition - and they have a video about the synchronous fireflies at Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee. It reminded me of the Tree of Voices in the movie Avatar. For a few weeks, the fireflies put on a show that draws thousands of visitors... so many that there is now a lottery system through recreation.gov to get a parking pass to drive up to where you can take a shuttle to sit in the dark in the forest. It's an area about 35 miles from Knoxville. Some of you may have already had this bucket list experience!

Thanks, Doug - the original photo is so much more detailed / but, I am limited by the forum size of image restrictions! Haven’t seen this one for a couple days. The last photo I had from a neighbor shows hawk with bunny on a rooftop. Discovery channel and bunny herd culling!

Image Will be here before you know it....

Summmmr....is fleeting, and so we try to pack more into it. The Dog Days Challenge brings this into sharper relief as it ramps up the amount of meters needed to stay in the hunt each week. This is all designed to get you and your team ready for the Fall Team Challenge...which will start on September 15...so. Yes. Fleeting...but STILL a lot to fully use up. Get out there!
