Perhaps surprisingly, white pelicans are common sights on the Rocky Mountain waterways. I've usually seen them around golf courses and often up at some of the mountain lakes as the summer progresses. Dog walks take me by a couple of small ponds nearby - it's like an escape into a totally different world for a brief time. When I saw a flash of white, I thought it might be an egret taking off...but no! Five white pelicans, two cormorants (very prehistoric looking things) and an egret were all enjoying one small pond that's been designated a wildlife habitat. Good stuff. And another reason to have a dog. :D

Meanwhile, welcome back to Matt F, Ted and Jeff M! Always good to see returning team members!

Memorial Day Weekend here in the US, so an extended weekend for many. Hope you are all enjoying what is traditionally known as the Kickoff for Summer. Kids out of school, road trips!, and camping for sure (although many times, campers in the Rocky Mountains better still have their cold weather gear....). Whatever you're doing, have some fun with it..and do remember why it is celebrated.

Sometimes a hail storm begins with a few tink tink tinks on the windows....and other times, those waay before dawn yet waaay after midnight times, you are levitated out of your sleeping zone and find yourself dashing out to save things (plants, that vehicle you just had hail damage on last summer) amidst the flash of lightning and deep rumble of thunder. Dashing before you're even really awake to question "what am I doing here?!" Pea sized hail (there are some BIG peas) that was still in solid form two hours later. Naturally, NATURALLY, one can't drift back to sleep after dashing. Besides, the dogs found all this quite exciting....and surely it's time for breakfast? Snort. Anything for a kibble or two. Mercy.

Yes! It's my personal best. It was weird seeing that time because I had a better average pace than most of my 1hour session. Maybe i'm better on long distance.

Image What did you find?

The mostly daily walks with the dogs continue to yield unexpected things...whether it's sights, sounds or smells. The cows are back in the pasture and they provide all three of those things. Now that we've had some good rains, the grasses are high enough to hide MULTIPLE bunnies...but they are quickly sniffed out by the pups. This keeps me at the ready to counter the sudden pull force on the required leashes. We hadn't run into a birder before though, and this fellow was using his binoculars to stare intently into the trees at what he identified as a yellow warbler and some kind of flycatcher (apparently there are several). This was better than the previous day's almost Discovery Channel moment of stalking night heron tries to get baby duckling. Nature.

Thanks Kona! Always like it when I achieve a goal I set out for... today I turned 59, so I rowed a 50,000 meter and a 9,000. Felt pretty good to accomplish also. I get a little relaxation next week as it is EID holidays here. I will be off the erg for a week as I get to fly to Barcelona and meet up with one of my co-workers and relax on his 58 foot sailboat. Been talking about for over a year and finally decided to make it happen. So looking forward to the adventure.

I’m sure I will find a place I can get some rowing time on the water.

Thanks again for all you do for us!

Happy rowing,

Ed

Well done Ed, happy birthday and enjoy Barcelona...

Weather changing in the Harbour City, getting cold...! And speaking of colds, I joked with someone the other day I haven't had a head cold since I "graduated" from paid work two years ago. Well, that tempted fate, I've now got a head cold and been relegated to the couch for the past few days. Although hoping it goes quickly as Janet and I are planning to be in the bush over the next couple of weeks.

Good luck and rowing to all, Cheers Baz B)
