Well-paced flat line there Jack! I'm going to have to go and play with the boats again now :).

Dave
“Flat line?” I resemble that. Did you notice that the grfc output’s choice of vertical scale In my case makes me look like Steady Eddy? Actually desperate example of precipitous positive splitting.↘️

 Just saw your result, that's great motivation! :D
I hope to reach about 18:10 on a good day, we'll see...
What's your 5k PB?
5k PB is 18:17 but that was 2018. The thing is that I think I can beat practically all of my PB's now. I bought my C2 in 2018, trained seriously for about 2 months and then all sorts of stuff happened in my private life, moved houses 2 times, wife in the hospital etc. So it's been kind of rollercoaster but things have settled down again now. And with the C-crisis at hand I have found time to pick up rowing again. So i've been training seriously for about 6 weeks now which means I am improving every week. Did a 10k and a 5k 2 weeks ago. That was 38:27 for the 10k and 18:34 for the 5k. Think if I try agiain next week that I can go sub38 on the 10k and think I can get close to my 5k PB again as wel. PB on the 2k is 6:57. If I look at the 1:46.4 split on the 3 times 1721 then I am pretty sure I'll be able to beat the 6:57 as well.

I just keep training. Lot's of long steady state work and I try to push myself on the challanges.
Sometimes life hits you hard and training has no priority for some time, good things have settled down again!
I agree, with your CTC, 6k and last 500m effort I think you can beat all your PBs, esp. 2k, sub 6:50 for sure, maybe 6:45. Looks like you have great preconditions, 6 weeks of serious training isn't much, you will improve fast, and soon you'll beat all my current PBs (maybe except the sprint distances  ).
I'll have a look at your challenge results and try to stay a bit in front, good luck and stay motivated! :D

Dave, I just had a look at the rankings. After soaking a few hankies over my sub-average, sub-median, sub-basement 500m time in 70-79 ltwt, I chanced upon Terry Dargan, LindsayH’s erg buddy. He does the CTC as a Flyer, IRL and Nonathlon season in and out. Wish he could be encouraged to throw in with us for Series 8?
Hopefully Lindsay can pop him a message and ask him to sign up to the team some time. If you saw a time in the rankings it means he at least is using the logbook which is a start. Would like to get that 3rd boat floating this round!

Dave
I joined the flyers the other week, did a 6k (22:27) for the first bit of the spring challenge, but yet to be put in boat.
Can I join the 3rd boat?

Cheers

Hi Jack - Terry's "problem" is lack of access to an erg. His daughter has one so he can go there and manages a couple of times a week - his participation has been built around us training together and me getting him to do stuff. He is still pretty fit though - 2 hour cycle and 2 hour kayak this week and walking every day. I will see if I can organise it - the 500 is not his favourite thing but he knows he has to do one for IRL/FMMC anyway. I suspect the 30' will be an easier sell.

I managed to get a 500 done tonite but pretty slow I am afraid @1:38.1 - just wanted to get one done to get a score on the door. I will revisit over the weekend if I get a chance after work to get a better one if I can.

I think tonight I am going to have a go at the CTC challange.
Row 3 x 1721m / 4 mins rest. First rep standing start. Subsequent reps as you like. No restrictions.
Anybody else participating?
that turned into a very good time btw - super strong. You will be really nailing it by the end of the lock down.
We need two ladies to float boats 2 and 3 now ready - I hope lizh will be up for it soon to fill one
my CTC will happen next week but will be in the 1:50s I suspect.

Gah! I hate 500s! But since today was a sprints day for the erg workout emailed by my OTW coaches I decided that being already in a sprint frame of mind I'd get the beast out of the way once I'd finished.

Relatively happy with an SB of 1:44.1, even if I was lifting off the seat on nearly every stroke. (Note to self: change foot stretchers to 3 holes showing from 2 holes showing when doing a 500m time trial) Then I got relatively sad thinking about how when I was a younger man (only 57) I could do a whole 2K race at that pace and my 500m PB was 1:33.5. I'm not the man I used to be......the one whose hair was brown instead of gray, who didn't need eyeglasses to read, who didn't need to get up to pee every 2 hours at night. Sigh. I liked being that guy.

If you're lifting off the seat you're pulling upwards too much. When you're at the catch lower the handle so you don't pull up and you use the force to drive away and straighter.

If you can put a piece of tape, or something similar, either side of where you need to have the handle when it is straight that should help in addition to the foot stretchers.

Think Stu is on to something there, Rick. Link below is stroke analysis vid posted in training subforum recently by a fellow with a series of erg training vids. He suggests dropping and relaxing the shoulders to avoid pulling chain on the great circle route (the dory hauling encouraged by rowing boats with a lot of freeboard).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5h9Iy95Ul8

As to foot height, sprinters as fast and powerful as “Doc” Baker routinely raise their feet to remove the vertical component from the drive effort when they find themselves separating from the seat.

Jack is totally right, foot position makes a big difference. For 100m sprints I put my feet as high as possible, for 1min and 500m 2 holes higher than normal. I would also recommend shorts that stick on the seat as good as possible, slippery shorts are bad.

Just put in my first attempt at the 500m. Got a 1:30.8
That's realistically speaking about 1-1.4 seconds removed from my PB (which was done in race mode).
Better then I feared after not having done anything like this intense in about 2 years, but I feel like I could do better.
Bumped the DF up to 150ish and started out with 100m of full power strokes. Then consolidated a tad too low at 1:32 for the middle 200,
after which I tried to pick up the pace for the home stretch. Which was where the rub lay. There comes a time where you need to trade power for rate, and I just didnt have the legs anymore to accelerate the flywheel above 33spm... Had to finish with power strokes so I could not really empty the tank.

Amazing how such a short effort can knock the wind out of you for the following 30 minutes though.. I was really winded on the cooldown.

Thanks guys. Things to work on. I'd been using 3 holes showing for the past year or so, but when one of the OTW coaches noticed he had me lower it to 2. Generally it has been fine except when sprinting. I suspect that sprinting brings out the worst of my errors, and is an indication that I'm doing things wrong and should concentrate on fixing them. Now that I think of it, the coach also once told me to keep the chain straighter instead of moving it in a flattened oval.

Andrew, yes, currently 6lbs off, so will take it down gradually. Lets go as LWTS to Cardiff in Nov?? NOt sure about the CTC as I dont think I have ever done it, I have a different login for doing the ski erg, , but yes ask Dougie
Sounds like a good plan Chris, 2lb of scraping in to lwt this morning but would like a little bit more of a cushion - maybe hovering around 11st 8lbs - before entering a competition as a lwt - plenty of time to get there though and Cardiff sounds good :D

Ronald, awesome effort on the 500m and faster than last week - how was the nausea after that one? Pacing looks spot on although I suspect those last 200m were a little painful

Good to see you back rowing Johnny S and that's a good volume for your first month back - I normally average around 30K a week although doing a lot of UT1 / UT2 volume at the moment with having a bit more time in lockdown. Will probably get back to intervals next month though and get to work on that 8K+ 30'

Jack, I feel like I should buy you a beer after the challenge you layed at my feet after the weekend.. Had to pull 2 30k days to catch up again, I'm exhausted.
Wow Ivan - 2 x 30K days  not surprised you felt exhausted that's some serious commitment!
