Thank you Ivan, great to see how Jack and you pushed each other to more and more meters!
Did the 500m on Monday, but half hearted with bad preparation, slowed down after about 250m and the last 100m really slow. All the UT2 meters I did recently made me a bit soft, the result of 1:22.7 is OK but a good bit away from a strong effort.
Good luck everyone for the challenge!
1:22.7?!?! That's very strong imo. I'm going to give it a go tomorrow I think
It's a matter of perspective, with good preparation and motivation I should be at least 2'' faster, so I'm a good bit away from my current capability. When you do a 30', start fast and then slow down to finish at 8200m you're faster than most other rowers, but you could be a good bit faster (and won't be very happy with the effort)
Good luck for your attempt, your first 500m TT if I remember right?

How many 500m TTs have you done so far? And what pacing strategy did you use?
I have done 2 serious attempts:
One in 2018 when I PR'd at 1:24.7
One last week at 1:25.7
On both occasions the pacing was pretty simular. First 100m I have get the flywheel going so on both attempts it was exactly 1:26. Second 200m is the fastest at around 1:24 and from there the split crawls slowly up to about 1:27 for the last 100m. Fastest split I've seen on both attempts was 1:21.
I was thinking about having a go at an all out sprint in de first 150m and try to hit that 1:16 split and see where I go from there. But I think that won't work because after a 100% sprint effort even 350m will feel a long long way after that. Maybe I'll aim for something in the middle, try hitting sub 1:20 in the first 100m to get the pace going and then drop straight to 1:25 and see how long I can hold that.
That's very good, I think your pacing strategy for the first 2 TTs should work once more. You could be a bit faster with a faster start, but the risk to hit the wall is high. If you plan 2 efforts you can risk a crash at the first one, if you only do it once I would recommend the save strategy that worked 2 times so far.
@ ivan:
The fastest sprinters also use the fly and die strategy, it's no lack of control but calculation: if you have enough power for a fast finish you should have used this power before, if your tanks are empty at the end you'll have your fastest time, if they are empty before the finish you have a problem

I didn't say I finish those last strokes at full power.. I consider it a success if the splits fall off a cliff for the last 3 strokes.
Somehow don't see my time improving if that were to happen 10 strokes from the finish.
But there's likely more than one reason my PB is 1:30 and yours around 1:20.

I think tonight I am going to have a go at the CTC challange.
Row 3 x 1721m / 4 mins rest. First rep standing start. Subsequent reps as you like. No restrictions.
Anybody else participating?

The 500m spitballing never fails to get the sap flowing, even for us old farts whose best sprint time involves a trip to the fridge in the commercial break.
The WEC meter munch is done and dusted but I want to congratulate all the team mates who took up this fitness challenge despite uncertainty and anxiety about the larger challenge from which none of us can opt out.
Special thanks to Ivan V. for offering a sporting chance to an old turtle who fancies himself a track rabbit. Believe me I will always know what time it is in Rotterdam.
Incredible average pace over meters rowed by Martin S. The real Energizer Bunny! Please nobody tell him that intensity and volume are supposed to be inversely proportional.

I've been postponing the CTC for a few evenings now. Decided to use today for a BikeErg warmup on Zwift to tick the New York KOM off a current Strava challenge list, and then pop a quick 500m in. Nowhere near the times posted by the big boys, but happy enough for a 40+ PB of 1:43.9. I don't think I'll repeat it, but might shave some milliseconds off with a proper warmup that doesn't involve throwing a couple of hundred watts at a virtual hill.
It was good enough to get our first boat floating (once I'd shuffled some 2nd boat team mates into the 1st boat). Here are the 8 times currently posted...
Code: Select all
Name Current Round
Martin Stoeger 1:22.7
Ilkka Korhonen 1:29.8
Wyatt Johnson 1:30.7
Andrew Crystal 1:39.0
Chris Leitz 1:41.3
David Moores 1:43.9
Chris Whale 1:44.7
Martin Boemer 1:46.1

Hahahaha, I can't argue with any of that, and very good point! I don't have much perspective of 500m and below.
If I have done a 500m I don't recall what it was so it probably is my first one

Dave, I just had a look at the rankings. After soaking a few hankies over my sub-average, sub-median, sub-basement 500m time in 70-79 ltwt, I chanced upon Terry Dargan, LindsayH’s erg buddy. He does the CTC as a Flyer, IRL and Nonathlon season in and out. Wish he could be encouraged to throw in with us for Series 8?

Just mine as well. You and me are right beneath eachother on the leaderboard. Did mine in 18:18.8.. 1:46.4/500m avg split.

1st 1721 1:46.5 split
2nd 1721 1:46.5 split
3rd 1721 1:46.1 split
Very sattisfied. Tank was completely empty. This was the most I could get out of it. Won't do a second try. Pretty sure I have just motivated you to give it another go
If I compare my PB's to your's then you should be able to be 3 or 4 splits faster then me. Challange on

Hopefully Lindsay can pop him a message and ask him to sign up to the team some time. If you saw a time in the rankings it means he at least is using the logbook which is a start. Would like to get that 3rd boat floating this round!

What's your 5k PB?
5k PB is 18:17 but that was 2018. The thing is that I think I can beat practically all of my PB's now. I bought my C2 in 2018, trained seriously for about 2 months and then all sorts of stuff happened in my private life, moved houses 2 times, wife in the hospital etc. So it's been kind of rollercoaster but things have settled down again now. And with the C-crisis at hand I have found time to pick up rowing again. So i've been training seriously for about 6 weeks now which means I am improving every week. Did a 10k and a 5k 2 weeks ago. That was 38:27 for the 10k and 18:34 for the 5k. Think if I try agiain next week that I can go sub38 on the 10k and think I can get close to my 5k PB again as wel. PB on the 2k is 6:57. If I look at the 1:46.4 split on the 3 times 1721 then I am pretty sure I'll be able to beat the 6:57 as well.
I just keep training. Lot's of long steady state work and I try to push myself on the challanges.
