Elvis's Presley would be 74 years old today. However......"Elvis has left the bulidlng" and is no longer with us. Today........is my birthday. I'm 64 years old and I plan on being around for a while.

I put a post on the "weight loss section" but thought I would put a similar post here. Perhaps it will provide a good incentive to others to keep up the good work. Most of you are doing a fantastic job setting an example during the JVC which is a pretty good incentive to keep at it. I will try to do the same. Here you go:

Posted: Jan 8, 2009 1:33 pm Post subject: Is rowing good for you part II - a year later

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had a similar post not too long ago, but can't find it so.........here's another one. Yep - it's been a year since I started training seriously. I reported that I had taken off quite a bit of weight, etc. Summing things up from last year:

Last year my blood pressure was up (it's highest was 180/110), I tested positive for type 2 diabetes and my cholesterol was in the 200 range and I was fat.

My training over the last year has been three-fold:

1. eat properly (notice I did not say DIET?)
2. lift weights to build muslce tissue. Afterall - muscle burns more calories at rest than fat. Thus, I"m burning more calories as a result.
3. row aerobically

Today I visited the doctor - he was amazed in the differences between last year and this year. Everything was normal. I'm about 60 pounds lighter. My last blood test for cholestoral was in the 125 range (lowest in my life) with high HLD (good cholesterol) numbers. My blood pressure was 110/70 (the best in YEARS) and my resting pulse is 60. My diabetes is under control and my sugar in the normal range. Prior to going to the doctor, I tested my blood sugar levels before and after rowing. It dropped a LOT. Exercise is good for you!!

Today is my birthday (I'ts also Evlis' birthday). I'm 64 and getting better every day. Elvis would be 74!! I guess you could say: "Elvis has left the bulding!" I plan on being here a longggggggg time. Training will help me meet that goal! Is rowing good for you? - You betcha!!

Oh yes - I no longer have three sets of clothing - my normal clothes fit. Nope - I'm not "there" yet. However, these are great incentives to get on that rower until I fall off!!

Tom - impressive results, consistency is the key. Boring, but the key.

Yesterday was a day spent on the road, away from the erg. We drove down to Palomar Mountain to see the Hale Telescope. The one with the 200" (5 m) diameter mirror. It is impressive to see in person.

But I'm not sure it could find us, the lunar module is too small for it to find on the moon's surface. I did learn lots of cool lunar/space stuff and the kids (13 & 14) thought Mom found a really cool place.

Congratulations on the Full Marathon! (And thanks for the book references a while back - I did check out Three Bags Full)

I noticed that Concept2 now lists the marathon reward as a marathon "pin" so you may have gotten one of the last of the mugs.

Happy Birthday, Tom !

Gina - that is a really big telescope....we should be able to pinpoint our landing spot quite well with it!

And no more Marathon Mugs! There goes the incentive! Say it isn't so!

G'day to you, too, Dave H! Sounds like you live in the west? I grew up in Cottesloe ... too bad we didn't buy some real estate back then ...

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately it was western Sydney I was refering to, and not the wonderful Western Australian coastline... my wife is a Sandgroper, and her parents are still over there about 20mins north of Cottesloe. Would definitely love to own a couple of acres there! B)

Congrats on your Marathon - I have tried several times but usually get too "sore in the saddle" to continue, or rationalise my way out of it at the 20 or 30k mark!

Thanks for higlighting the Aussies Kona2 - looks like Angelo P isn't around for this challenge, so I will have to do a few metres for him!

Cheers Team - good to see our metres up near the top of the ladder. B)

Rowing on

Post by DuluthMoose » January 8th, 2009, 11:50 pm

Tom - Good for you! Amazing results and keep up the great work.

Chris - A full marathon is an incredible achievement! I can't imagine that much time on the rower. Uff da!

The virtual Quetico trip is rapidly coming to an end. We've put in a long day and are now 128 kilometers into the trip. One last campsite to enjoy on this trip. We've selected an island in Bailey Bay of Basswood Lake, and there is a great recliner rock to relax the evening away in and watch a nice sunset at the waters edge. See the next 2 pictures at http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2985 ... t=outdoors
Tomorrow you will experience a little culture shock meeting and passing by at least 50 groups (multiple canoes per group) on your 15K row in across the Canadian border and back to the landing and parking lot at Moose Lake in Minnesota. And this is after you didn't see anyone but your tripmates for 3 consecutive days. Your nose will also wrinkle at the now unfamiliar smell of outboard motor exhaust from the motorized boat traffic. You may have a sudden urge to turn around and go back to the solitude and serenity you've just experienced over the last week. But this is still a gentle way to ease back into the rat race and you'll always have your trip memories to reflect on. And besides if you get an early start, you can make it to Ely in time for pizza and COLD BEER for late lunch. And chocolate pie for Captain K! The end.

Yay for chocolate pie! Thanks, Moose! :D

We head for home in the morning, but won't get there until Sunday night. Monday should see the Strasburger family back on the C2, and entering JVC meters.

Wow- lots of marathoners! And so fast, too!

My fastest marathon was 3 hours 43 minutes, and that was the fastest on C2 ranking for that year for my age and weight! (62yo-lw) Its a long time to stay on the machine, although as all of you found, you do go into a sort of trance for about 25000 meters.

So, those of you who have them, get your mugs out and hoist a beer to yourselves. And to all us 'old-timers' who manage to do long distances.

Looks like I'll have to do another one, I don't have a pin!

Welcome Andy W! You have joined up with the right bunch if you want some extra motivation to be a meter millionaire! And we thank you in advance for the meters you will bestow on the team to help us move closer to the moon! Full moon tomorrow night folks - we're going to get crazier!!

And Grams, about the marathoners....not really sure which Luna-Tic started heading us down that path....might have been our Kaptain Kristine! All I know is that reading of each other exploits, cheering on with all the celebrations, seems to drive us to greater heights. And since you don't have a marathon pin, I say go for it!

I have asked Dena H to check with marketing to see if they will release the C2 marathon logo with a link to Cafe Press to have it put on a marathoner's pint glass. That way we can help Concept2 reduce their costs, but still get the coveted prize.
