My next goal is: 20,037,500 meters.
Can you guess what that equates to?
I'm guessing with Google's help that this is exactly half an orbit...

My Learned Luna-Tic Friends,

I last used a Concept2 machine (the rower) on April 19, 2018 and so have contributed nothing to our Team's 2019 meters. This is the longest I have gone without rowing since I acquired my rower two weeks after completing my 70th orbit around the sun in April 2012. It is indeed eerie to see a big fat zero next to my name on the Challenge board for the new season. On April 20, 2018 I had surgery to repair a decades old left inguinaI hernia, and I was told by the surgeon that I would have to wait at least one month before rowing again, so that I expect a further delay until May 20th before making any contribution to the Luna-Tic's standing. I will see him on May 10th. He may or may not then modify the timetable. In the meantime, I am allowed to walk and have graduated to an approximate normal pace from that of a procession in a coronation. One is grateful for small things, but I am not handling this inactivity at all well.

On a brighter note, I am pleased to read how well everyone is doing this marathon season. Hoping to return soon.

Semper Fi,

Tom Rafter (Tombeur)

Hope things are healing up well Tombeur. I had bilateral inguinal hernias repaired about 7 years ago. My unsolicited advice is don't rush the recovery. Take it slow and listen to your body. Personally I wasn't in to rowing 7 years ago, but I waited 8 weeks after the surgery before I started biking again and 12 weeks before I started lifting again. Even then, I took it really easy paying close attention to my body and not pushing it at all. Hang in there for now, no doubt you'll be back at it before you know it!

And from Shaun, too! There's a spot on the roster for you once you've healed.

Take care of yourself, Tom. No worries, the rower is patient. Absence makes the erg grow fonder.

Image Another episode....bunny trails of the mind...

A test you want to take...team public safety announcement...

A lot of this geographical region of the Rocky Mountains is hot...as in uranium in the ground hot. This is particularly true of the area of Superior and Louisville, just to the north of us. These were big coal mining regions - and there is still quite a band of coal in the area. One of the golf leagues I'm on is Coal Creek, for example, and almost all the holes were named after mines or mining equipment. I've posted previously about how I started riding my mountain bike in some of the areas just to see the old mine sites. But I digress.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas that comes from decaying uranium in the soil. It seeps into your house through the basement as cracks and other things happen over time, and its levels will change over time. Colorado is considered a red state (for these purposes) because levels for most of the state are above 2-4 pCi/L. Continued exposure to radon increases your probability of developing cancer, especially lung cancer. Here's a link to EPA's state maps of radon averages... https://www.epa.gov/radon/state-maps-radon-zones
And here's a link to the EPA's Citizens Guide to Radon https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/fi ... _radon.pdf ...unless they've cut that program, too. For those that wonder where your EPA dollars sometimes go, there are some important functions!

Chances are that if you've bought or sold a home in the last decade, you're aware of radon testing procedures, etc. I'd had a radon test kit for several years, but didn't do anything with it. The instructions that came with that one were not eye-catching. You can get test kits at your local hardware store for not very much $$. Our HOA decided to showcase radon and radon mitigation a month ago. The "safe" level (not that there really is a safe level) is below 4 picoCuries/Liter....they usually abbreviated that pCi/L and I didn't think about it the same as when I heard the Curie part. We all know what happened to her! Neighbors reported levels of 9 - 17...and my house came in at 11. It is especially bad to do cardio in areas with this stuff, and naturally all my cardio equipment is in the basement.

Reducing radon levels for me means starting with a vent fan that pulls the gas from below the house and vents it up through a pipe. While this sounds like soil suction to me, I am not sure if that is what actually happens. When walking Thing 1 and Thing 2, I'd noticed the white pvc pipes that extended up to the roof tops, and the fans that were like little bulbs in the middle on house after house in the new development behind my house.

So. Now that I KNOW that I'm DOOMED after 25 years here (and once upon a time smoker in my younger and more foolish years)....I am getting the radon mitigation done before I exercise downstairs. Or I could haul the rower outside...which I may do. The pups would find that entertaining. Live in the moment because who knows what will happen.

Radon ...
Wow!! And thanks for the wake-up call. I'm pretty sure I remember a radon test in the past, and another one when we sealed the crawlspace (basements not so common in these parts). But I don't remember hearing any measurement numbers (just an Okay), and I don't remember giving it a lot of thought. Turns out our county is orange on the map in the link you sent.
