Kona2 wrote:In my time in the communications chair for the Lunies, I've had to write at least four postings that are about the loss of a teammate....and this is another one.

Richard T (Drivetofast) passed away yesterday afternoon following what sounds like a massive heart attack. His neighbor gave me a call to let me know so that I could let the team know that we had lost a teammate. No matter how much exercise you do, you cannot always outrun other factors - something we all know well. For all the times that Richard T was kind of prickly and combative, he also did a lot of the right things for people. We didn't always hear about those things on the forum. Initially, Richard had indicated privately that he was going to leave instructions for his dogs to be euthanized upon his death. I didn't want to see that happen, and asked the neighbor what was happening -- he did not leave those instructions. Two of his three dogs have been placed, and young Corky (not quite two) is at a trainer's house learning a few manners.

Richard's neighbor, Gretel, said Richard called these pups his millennials - and didn't believe in disciplining them much. After all, most pups outgrow some of the craziness starting in year 3. They were always ALWAYS with him. And now life has changed as it often does. Richard went out to lunch with his neighbor and another friend, and began complaining about excessive heat and chest pains shortly after lunch. The neighbor dropped him off, and when he didn't answer his phone a couple hours later, went in to check on him. He was gone and had been for a couple of hours.

We never know how much time we are given in this life, and so we try to make what we do count and memorable (one way or another). It's time for us to row or bike or ski-erg some special eights in Richard's memory, if you choose to do so, ..and hope that Corky finds a home, too.

Rest in peace, Richard T.
Thank you for letting us know.
I am sorry to hear the news. :(

Image Another Episode.....bunny trails of the mind...the Venn diagram of happiness...

Math and stats are tools that I use to create happy scenarios in my world - and perhaps in yours, too. And sometimes these tools help with understanding other concepts that you didn't think were math related at all....yep, I'm talking not about the Blue Bird of Happiness, but today it was the Venn Diagram of Happiness. Say whaaat? National Geographic just named Boulder (I live in the Bermuda triangle of Boulder, Broomfield and Jefferson counties) as the happiest city in the US. Dan Buettner, a Nat Geo staffer, travels the world looking for what he calls the Blue Zones of Happiness. These zones were called blue because of the way our mapping tools work (your location is blue blue blue). The theory is that if you have 100 percent happy - that's made up of 15 percent where you live, 40 percent genetics (this is more mysterious: are we talking chemical makeup, nature/nuture - what makes one person a positive vs a negative), and then there's 45 percent left that you can influence.

The 45 percent of what you can influence is where the Venn diagram of happiness happened. Seven factors individuals can control were listed as common to those who were happiest: (1) have a dog, (2) good light - preferably a window looking out to a garden or green space; (3) At least three close friends that will be with you when things are bad; (4) have spirituality or religion; (5) are married and stay married; (6) have a front porch - social interaction stuff; and, (7) volunteer. I'm sure cat people can be happier, too - and just to make sure I have covered the bases, I have a cat as well. I draw the line at iguana. And I would have added exercise to the list of 7, because that makes for happiness.

Still, they had me at Venn diagrams. When you think back to how you learned some of the concepts of math or science or ANYTHING, today's tools for learning are much more fun. Heck, I could probably do a lot better at calculus and physics now. Here's the Venn diagram video for a refresher course. Wish I'd had one of these back in the day:

Math is in almost everything. You just have to look for it.

Good luck, bg, on your Ghost Train Ultra run this weekend. I hope the weather is good, the trail smooth, and you're feeling strong after all your training.

I'm not sure i'll ever hit the 180 half marathons in a single season that K2 mentioned a few days ago, but today's row is half marathon #38 on the season for me(64 lifetime), and marks 30 straight days of 21k's (and a few extra meters the first few days for good measure)! :D

Half marathons completed in the last 30 days: 30
Distance covered on the rower in the last 30 days: 636,498m
Time spent pulling chain in the last 30 days: 50 hours and 45 minutes
Calories burned while rowing the last 30 days: ~36,130
Being a part of the best virtual rowing team out there: priceless!

Thank you to everyone on the team for the continued encouragement and motivation, both spoken and unspoken! Keep on rowing!

Still looking for a good training schedule for a real newbie but I'm sure to find it somewhere on this forum. First 100 km already in the log and I did 2 10k runs yesterday and 3 days ago. I really like it!

Cheers!

Anton

Welcome to our two new team members Andre and Player One! Our journey to the moon is made much more interesting with more teammates! I don't believe either one of you is showing up in our meter roster for the affiliation, though. To join the Luna-Tics as part of our year round team, you will need to go to your profile page (to get there, when you are in your logbook, click on the top right side of the page, then edit profile), scroll down to the part that says AFFILIATION, and that's where you indicate Luna-Tics. The join a team segment that is for Challenges is a little bit different. We'd love to see you be part of the year round team - because that is the part where we can celebrate your meters. Otherwise, I can't see them.
