Congrats!
"Iron" Will S. - WOW! Congratulations on 5 million meters for the season!
Gina - Oops my bad for mentioning the "W" word before New Years. I'll have to use ballast as the code word. And as to beneficial ballast for canoeing - I don't really see much.
Canoe Ballast 101: It will increase draft which will make a boat less susceptible to being blown off course by quartering winds, but of course this will also increase hull friction with the water and reduce my speed. If the ballast is low in the bilge it will increase the boats stability. Bottom line is any increase in my ballast above the ankles only raises the center of gravity in my canoes, decreases my canoe stability, and reduces my speed. I can always add a 5 gal container of water in my canoe in windy conditions if I really think the trade-off for stability vs speed is worth it. And unfortunately my ankles aren't where the ballast tends to accumulate...

Happy Birthday Kaptain Kristine!

Happy Birthday to Kaptain Kristine!
For those of you new to being Luna-Tics, some of the team shared birthdates as part of a birthday stats question that was posed. The idea was that we had a greater than 90 percent chance of having two people in this virtual population with shared birthdays. It turned out that we had TWO matching sets: May 12 and Aug 6th....seems like a third was out there at one time. So, if you would like to participate in this stats fun, send me a PM with month and date and we'll see if you match up!

Way to go Will S.! Happy Birthday Kristine!
And congratulations to all you other crazy LUNA-tics.
This has been a great challenge for me and I thank all of you for raising the bar. Jan -- your daily postings are truly motivational. Plus the fact that you did a second 1/2 marathon so soon after the first one you ever did pushed me to do another today. I have now crossed the 300K for this challenge.
Keep up the good work everyone!
Karyn

I'm bettin' he got some of them slides so's he'd feel like he was on water when it's really ice.
Travel Report:
Had a leisurely drive from Fredericksburg, VA to Glens Falls, NY. Overall trip mph was 38 for the last 250 miles it was 22.7, in near whiteout conditions. Total accumulation was 11 inches of the white stuff. For a couple of hours it was falling at the rate of 2 inche/hour. On the whole the bumper to bumper traffic maintained a wonderful degree of patients, just 2 or 3 idiots. I would have given a hundred dollars for a snow/ice tool. Flurries today, only a couple of inches expected. Tomorrow though is a different story; predictions are for 6-10 inches more with a little more everyday until New Years. We may not be able to leave until spring. Egads!

Woohoo! There are TWENTY-SIX Luna-Tics on the Honor Board as of this afternoon! Congratulations to Steven and Jack!
What's really cool is that the overall challenge meters for everyone participating now stands at 999 MM - with less than 100K to go to one billion meters. Over $18K being donated to designated organizations!
So....if you've met your challenge goals, think about doing just a few more over the next couple of days! Let's see if we can earn that entire $50K for a few good causes!

White knuckle driving
Dan - I hate those long distance white knuckle drives, even though my vehicle has all wheel drive. It sounds like the traffic convoyed up nicely and took a reasonable approach. Stay safe on those wintery roads!
And no, my new toy is not the Concepts slides - although I've thought about them also. I was hoping to get time yesterday to set up my new toy on the Concept 2 and post a picture or two, but removing another 8" of snow from the driveway, an Ikes planning meeting, shopping, finishing Christmas cards and a Holiday get-together prevented that. Today time demands don't look much better for me. So rather than continue to cause suspense, I'll just post a web site address for now. (Kona2 you're just too good at picking up on little variances in my rowing routine.... must mean I'm in a rowing rut!) Anyway I now own a Vermont Waterways canoe paddling adapter to use when I have time for "two-a-day" workouts this winter, the second being a more moderate evening workout and focusing only on my upper body using torso rotation, shoulders, and arms but with leg bracing to direct power to my torso; exactly the same workout as paddling a canoe gives me!

So Kona2 it will be a pretty safe bet that for those days that I post more than my usual 1 hour output, there will be paddling adapter meters included.

Thanks. Jack's Back! I probably haven't posted on our board this year, but it's good to be back. My exercising has been off this year do to travel and some pure good old fashioned laziness. My bike mileage is 1/3 of what it usually is, but 2009 will find me more committed both to cycling and rowing.
I've promised Kristine I would log 200,000 meters for the team virtual challenge next month. Hope the LUNA-TICS can finish first.

We have arrived at the shortest day...or the longest night of the year! While there are many celebrations associated with Winter Solstice, there is an astronomical event that is particularly relevant to our team - since we have our own Orion. During the winter solstice, the three stars that are in Orion's belt align with the brightest star in the eastern sky (Sirius) to show where the sun will rise the morning after solstice. For those of you who might be familiar with Harry Potter stories, the character Sirius would take the form of a big dog......and Sirius is part of Canis Major....the big dog.

Good rowing today ! The Concept2 participants have reached the 1 billion meter mark in 24 days!
Season meters as of 235/365 = 41,442,388 m
