Thanks much, K2, BG and Danwho! Getting a case of rower's elbow, so breaking out the flex bar and cutting back a little to nix that. Still have a few on-water events coming up so got to get this treated.

You have no idea (yet) of the bunny trail this has started....but I am working on it. Best description of horse flies EVER.

Best possible outcome wished on your surgery. You'll have to read the bunny trail you started tomorrow.

On Tuesday, Shaun quietly (ok, maybe a bleat or two) danced over the special EIGHTs eight million lifetime meters milestone. At this rate, the 10 million meter sweatshirt will be Shaun's just when Norma is starting to feel the chill that winter will bring. Congratulations, Norma! We wish you many, MANY more millions of meters!

And so our streak of palindrome days is done for this year...but when August 2018 rolls around....so will another streak! Happily, the Dodgers win streak was interrupted also. Snort (thank you, 00-Minnie, for that word -it is so expressive of many things), little chance that we will get a reprieve until August 2018 from them.

Today's numbers are few...due to the late number grab yesterday. And it's summr, so we're all busy getting outside time before that dreaded first splotch of yellow leaves appears in the trees...and you say "ah, there it is, the first harbinger of Fall." Or something similar.

8 MM Lifetime Meters Norma
6 MM Lifetime Meters Keith

Thanks, everyone, for rowing and ski-erging with us!

Kevin 7,527 m
David A 8,804 m
Jane 10,501 m ..a palindrome!
Stefan 12,047 m
Norma 12,121 m ...biding her time until I notice the yearly total...? A palindrome from the queen of palindromes!

ImageImage They say it's your birthday.....and so it is! It's going to be a good day, all day....but then...I say that every day! Thanks for the good birthday wishes!

Image Another episode....

"...the horse flies will turn into pterodactyls..." was certainly one of the best descriptions ever of those beastie biting flies. I had an immediate visual of those sharp beaked flying reptile things going in for the targeted victim.

Big flying birds have filled some of the chapters of Sinbad (the Roc) and certainly those who have watched The Lord of the Rings will remember the giant flying bird that rescued the wizard Gandalf from his stone perch. Or what about Harry Potter and the hippogriff called Buckbeak .... there is no shortage of some of these imaginary flyers in fiction and myth.
But then there were the real ones. Fossils discovered in Kansas, and Texas (home to many big things) showed that Pterodactylus...those flying reptiles with teeth, and pteranodons (no teeth, fish eaters) were those early flying reptiles that perhaps started our evolutionary bird chain. Pteranodons were much bigger that the pterodactylus - and had wing spans that were up to 30 feet. I am certain that some horse flies are related to the pterodactyls - Richard called it right. The pterodactyls were fast little chompers with wing spans of 2 to 3 feet. Unlike our current birds, these walked on four "legs" on ground vs biped stance of current birds. These existed at a time (and there have been four times I think) when all the continents on the Earth formed a supercontinent called Pangea (among other things), and this land mass was surrounded by a global ocean known as Panthalassa. Tectonic forces surely split up the land mass (and even today some of them want to be further away from others). The seas that covered places like Colorado, Texas and Kansas now yield tons of fossils for finding. One of the most remote places to be totally amazed by the ability of single-celled life forms that lived in shells to create land masses (formininfera or forams to their friends) is in the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas and New Mexico. This area is so unique that it was designated a national park in 1972...you can add this one to your list of places to visit. Ice ages, giant cataclyisms, dinosaurs, flying reptiles...our movies and fiction aren't really so far off from what happened long ago. Keep an eye on the sky ... you never know what could be flying up there... and if it's a hawk with a snake, gawd...don't let it get dropped...

Egads, I have July-23 marked in my party planner as your most significant 2017 birthday. Obviously, Adele was operating in the Bubble Universe when I wrote that down ... many time zones away. Happy Birthday, Astrogator.
