Suck it up, Buttercup

Post by just27 » July 8th, 2017, 4:53 pm

I didn't get home till 10:30 pm, last night, which is a bit late to start rowing. However. I'd just finished reading John Fairfax's book, "Britannia" (circa 1971) about rowing solo across the Atlantic (thanks, Richard, for the loan!) and told myself to "suck it up, Buttercup," as I pulled on my C2 gear!

Image

Mr. Fairfax usually rowed 10 -12 hours a day. He wore gloves most of the time when rowing; and treated his chaffed behind as follows, after it developed a bloody rash: "Rubbed it with surgical alcohol every half hour, then put my bottom up to the sun. At the end of the day ... I feel much better." So, next time we revisit the question of which is the best seat padding ... y'all have another option to consider!

Mmmmmm, okay... but that sounds a little like the old joke about the best remedy for a toothache... wear tight shoes.
Then again, double-ohs are known for their tolerance for pain... "I've got a little itch."

Maybe I should have tried that today. First time being stuck on a sand bar. Sitting in a canoe in the Mississippi River & couldn't budge! Felt dumb as a box of rocks. Barges, heat (97*), horseflies, oh my  . Oh well, suck it up, buttercup. Look forward to safely erging inside tomorrow...

Hooboy...the erg odometers are spinning! Steve W is starting to watch for that BIG odometer turn of ONE million meters that will be coming up...soon as he gets off that sandbar, that is. As usual, 00-Minnie has started something with "Suck it up, Buttercup." Watching for the next big click on your erg odometer? While we can't quite erg drive the machine around the block so easily so we won't miss the click of the numbers shifting into place, I am certain that many have mapped out a plan to enjoy seeing the desired sequence of numbers! Especially Shaun.

Was paddling to a new destination / pick up point just past the Missouri / Mississippi Rivers confluence. Had my choice of going to the left of an island or right, staying within sight & reach of the new landing. Stayed right about 25 meters off shore when the canoe just ground to a slow halt. Paddle on left, hit sand. Paddle on right, same. Tried pushing forward, moved 6 inches. Kept paddle-pushing, lurching, looking at shore thinking "I'm 75 feet from shore, this can't just be 6" deep".

Switched to my spare / junk paddle. Better to snap it trying to sand row than my good paddle. Knew if I jumped out / tried to walk, the sand would suddenly disappear and like a schmuck, so would I. Stopped trying to row forward, just aimed toward river center & hoped for water. That's when the horseflies started. Was madly lurching, hat-swinging and poking at sand, praying a video didn't surface later on YouTube. Finally got free from the sand but not the horseflies or heat. Suckers bit at every opportunity until the canoe was tied to the car. Paddle & learn...

Image Another episode....

Clearly outdoor adventuring requires the resourcefulness gene .... shifting sandbars and horseflies, both will test your perseverance! Meanwhile, yet another bit of nature has surfaced in the relatively safe confines of the backyard. Toads...and what was worse...toad turds. Never in my life had I given even one minute of thought to toads and toad deposits. Until now. I was busy replacing a sprinkler head late yesterday evening (the dogs LOVED it when I had to test a couple different zones to see which one had the failed unit), and a good sized toad emerged from somewhere. Next thing I knew, there was something extra that the dogs wanted to investigate, and in my opinion, toads are 3/4 poop. This could be worse than having geese on the lawn.

Image Having heard that we've had two humans bitten by rattlesnakes at the nearby dog park (both survived), and a couple of dogs in the neighborhood also bitten (one survived), naturally there is interest in protecting against a slithery invasion. My search for snake repellent yielded a product that sounds too goofy to be real...but there it was. Dr T's Snake Away....part napthalene base (mothballs). Putting it around the perimeter outlined by the fence felt like setting the warding boundaries in some occult thriller. Nevermind that I have seen bullsnakes cruising along the top rail of the fence...

Ah, nature.

Rattlesnakes
1 What you could do is get a vaccine for dogs

2 Find a trainer who will have the dogs avoid Snakes
3 Get a mongoose or a hawk

No matter what you do if a snake wants to get in they will

Based only on my experience, suggest installing a sandbar :D .

Steve Next time you have a story tell k2 first. The horse flys will turn into Pterodactyls the canoe will be a dug out etc.etc. She just has that talent. To me The bunny trails is what keeps me coming back. Good to see your ok and that your Covered Wagon got you home.

Do you live in Missouri? I'm so happy you made it off of the sandbar. I'll always think of you as Tom Sawyer, from here on out.

I was thinking of getting a Go Pro Hero5 session to put on my dog Corky. Like to see how he sees the world. Has anyone had any luck with this model? Or should I get another brand like a garmin? A garmin shows elevation, course, alt, heart rate. Tom I mean Steve you should get one too. So you can share Your Adventures
