Thanks for all the well wishes - leathers and helmets and sumo outfits (uff da!). Dogs are SO excited to go out for a walkabout that it is very hard to contain them. I only walk one at a time now as their combined super powers might be enough to drag me for a few blocks. It's so odd how much goes through your mind when you know you're going to hit the ground - and you have to decide whether to just roll with it or brace yourself. I took the bicycling crash approach, and just dropped the shoulder and rolled with it...and no collar bones were broken (put your hand out to catch yourself...and it's almost guaranteed that the collar bone will go). It's good to think about these things before you are mid-air...I can just see me in the sumo outfit, trailing along behind Thing 1 or Thing 2 ....neighbors calling in the alien report. Snort.

In the midst of all this, danwho has been keeping better track of the palindromes that you all slip in there than I have. I missed Rebecca's season total when I called out the 150K...she had a palindromic 150,051...good stuff all around! Love the puzzles to figure out...

The bad part I won't have access to a rower for three weeks. I will get golf and some hiking in but will miss my daily routine a little...

I was very lucky today. I found the Lost River

Another episode...bunny trails of the mind...

While Richard T was searching successfully for the Lost River, I was searching in another part of the world for a few lost golf balls. The mosquitoes were out in force, honing in on me in a squadron formation. Naturally (naturally!), I was the only one in the foursome that the little buzzers found tasty. Which started me down a couple of paths: the first being why are some people more tasty to mosquitoes than others; and, two a squadron of mosquitoes...these are the planes variety.

Turns out that there are a lot of things that (Rebecca W knows a bit more about these kinds of things I think) determine why some people get chomped more than others...the little vampires. Blood type, exercise, shirt color, metabolism and whether you drink beer all have an impact on how tasty you might be...and you can add genetics to the list, too.
Type 0 people (the universal donors) are twice as likely as Type A's to get targeted by mosquitoes. So how do the little buggers KNOW what type you are so they can pre-select you?! Well, there's an answer for that, too. 85 percent of us secrete a chemical signal through our skin that says what blood type we are. If you've got more lung capacity and are exhaling carbon dioxide in bigger batches than the person next to you....zap. You're it. Higher metabolism and exercise both raise temperature. Shirt colors (black, dark blue and red) send a visual signal (I wore a red shirt). Those little demons of mosquitoes can pick up the carbon dioxide from 164 ft away (imagine that research). I wasn't drinking a beer at that time or I probably would have been majorly chomped. Get the DEET.


In the WW II era, Downsview Canada (north of Toronto) was the manufacturing site of the deHavilland Mosquito - a wooden plane with a great many skillsets. Back in the day, there was a lot of metal alloy shortage, so wooden planes without armor were perhaps a default choice. The Mosquito was a two seater - and used to identify targets, fly really fast (like 400 mph), and live to fight another day by escaping from the enemy. Sting and run. Gives a whole nother visual for a squadron of mosquitoes.

From Mosquitoes to Asteroids...micro to macro! And this is IT for June...already working on that great whooshing sound in the southern henisphere where tomorrow is today.

Some of you will remember The Far Side, a similarly single-paneled cartoon by Gary Larson. Larson retired the comic over 20 years ago, but all the works have been republished as collections. No secret symbols (that I know of) associated with The Far Side....but some favorite characters.
