Forum Flyers
Re: Forum Flyers
Hi, I'm new here on the forum and I thought it would be fun to join a team if you'll have me?
Female, senior citizen in her '60s, overweight, bad back trouble, but persevering anyway.
A couple years ago, I started having a LOT of knee pain. So I went to my doctor, he said "Lose weight." And I said "but I lost 20 pounds this past year and my knee pain is WORSE!" He consulted my record, realized I was right and sent me to an orthopedist. Who found my knee joints are OK, but I had a kneecap tracking problem. She sent me to physical therapy. At as the end of that, my therapist was setting me up in the gym for various exercises for me to continue on my own and I noticed that the gym had a Concept 2 rower!
So I asked my PT about whether it might be a good form of exercise for me.
He wasn't keen.
I then asked my orthopedist about rowing.
She wasn't keen.
But I was supposed to exercise, and preferably NOT putting weight on my knees. I didn't know thing one about rowing, so I started watching YouTube videos. I found the Dark Horse Rowing channel, which was really helpful. I started using the C2 at the gym. I found I liked it and wanted my own and was about to order, when I fell and broke both wrists and badly sprained both thumbs. Oops! That was a bit of a setback... Once healed, I was back in physical therapy again.
After getting through that, I ordered my rower! It arrived last April. And two months after owning it, I found I was able to TAKE OFF MY KNEE BRACES! So much for what the knee PT and orthopedist thought....
But then, this past summer, I started having leg pain. And I went to the doctor who said it might be a back problem and sent me for spine x-rays and physical therapy. Unfortunately, got a visiting PT, and she pushed me hard doing this one Mackenzie exercise and suddenly I had pain in BOTH legs. My doctor sent me to get an MRI and the news wasn't good. Spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, multiple pinched nerves and a bulging disk. Disc space virtually obliterated between two lumbar joints. The only good news was he said my spine is stable and I probably would not wake up paralyzed some morning. And it's age related and not caused whatsoever by the light rowing I had done.
So I asked my spine physical therapist about rowing.
She wasn't keen. (Y'all sense a theme here?)
But I asked her to watch me on the gym C2 and see if she thought I could row a little, because I couldn't bear the thought of finally finding an exercise I liked and having to give it up. And she watched and agreed it would be OK, but she suggested rowing for shorter periods, starting with no more than 5 minutes.
So I did and have worked up to 10-15 minutes at a time. So you are not looking at a marathon rowing team member here....
But I completed my first Concept 2 challenge, I rowed 20 days in January! And most days I did more than the required 500m. So I hope it's OK that I joined.

Hear, hear!
Welcome aboard Graycyn and congrats on completing The Stretch. My wife is familiar with some (not all) of your physical challenges. She rows three days per week max 30’ total. If you enjoy the rowing exercise, don’t give up on it. None of us is Benjamin Button or Peter Pan but every good day means one less bad one. Forza!

Thanks y'all! Will do my best to contribute!
I'm not sure yet about the Valentine's challenge, but I may try it.
Had setbacks in January, a day spent at the hospital when hubby had gallbladder surgery left me in a lot of pain, then we had snow and hubby couldn't clear it for me after surgery, and that did me in for a few days. So I had to row every day after I was able again to get the challenge done. And had to be really careful not to set my back off any further!
My doctor wants me to have those steroid injections in my spine, but I'm hoping to avoid that. I'm not convinced the possible of temporary pain management outweighs the risks.
I use ErgData and have my Fitbit linked with Concept 2. I lost 25 pounds last year, will try for 15-20 this year. And see if I can better my 2K. I'm not dead last in the rankings, but pretty blamed close....

Re: Forum Flyers
Welcome on board, Cynthia!
Some admin if you haven't found these yet:
The monthly Cross Team Challenge provides some interesting events each month. Scores count towards floating team boats - each boat needs at least 1 female, so you're likely to help get another boat off the dock no matter what your result. You need to register separately there (the site is independent of this forum and the C2 logbook), and there are some confusing initial messages about wrong passwords which you should apparently just push through and all will be fine.
Please add Forum Flyers as your affiliation in your logbook so that your metres count towards the overall team total.
There's also a separate team registration you need to do under "Teams" in the logbook, so that you're included in the future monthly team challenges.
Cheers
Dave

Ok, I *think* I'm registered on the Cross Team Challenge site. But I was wondering if I can change my name there? I used my forum handle (graycyn), but then I was thinking I might prefer my name and last initial instead. But I couldn't figure out how to change or update my name! I don't understand that site at all! Will I have to do anything else on that site, or is it all automatic once registered?
I did get the affiliation bit done for my C2 online logbook. Thanks for saying something, because I didn't know about that! I think I'm registered OK on teams page and I signed up for the World Erg Challenge in March.

Welcome graycyn! Good to have you aboard!
Just in case something happens later this month I did my February CTC this morning. Thought trying to match my recent 2K pace might be a bit ambitious, but decided to live dangerously and try it anyway. Turned out that I could do even better. Managed to average 2.4 seconds better than my recent 2K pace. Chuffed with that.

Re: Forum Flyers
So is this the February CTC challenge?
Would I set that up on the PM 5 as some kind of interval workout? I'm not sure if I quite know what I'm doing with the PM5 yet for that sort of thing. All I've done, beside 'Just row' is set single time or single distance.
This does sound like a challenge I could do though! Probably without the living dangerously bit!
So what do I do? Just the 60 seconds on and off 12 times? And record distance?Row twelve reps
60 seconds rowing
60 seconds resting

Re: Forum Flyers
Ok, I Googled and setting up intervals on the PM5 seemed pretty easy. If there's a way to stop it at a certain time, well, I couldn't find that.
So I just did 12 intervals and stopped after. Ergdata says I did 2188m which is BETTER THAN ANYTHING I EVER DID BEFORE!
So I don't know if I did things right, I'll wait to hear back before I enter the distance on the CTC site.
I guess I did live a little dangerously. I could feel myself frowning I was concentrating so hard to keep form! New wrinkles coming, I suppose.
My back feels a bit tingly, but that's not entirely abnormal these days. See how it survives tomorrow. I'll hit my inversion table shortly, stretch it a bit. If I did it wrong, I can try again next week. I generally don't do intervals more than once a week. Seeing it up on the monitor was nicer than just trying to do it with 'Just Row'...

Re: Forum Flyers
If you do it as variable intervals you can set the number of reps. But for 12 equal reps it's much easier to just use Intervals:Time and watch the interval count on the PM5.
Re: Forum Flyers
That's what I did. And just in case I might've gotten too tired to notice where I was at, I set a timer on my Fitbit. So I guess I did the challenge OK! I pushed harder than maybe I should, but I think I'll be OK. Just a bit more nerve pain in my right leg.
If I could row a 2K at that pace, I'd have a new PB. But no way I could go non-stop that fast yet.

I think we have to assume you did everything right. You could use a foto hosting/ posting site (imgur.com) to upload a screen shot of the Erg Data row report but not really necessary. Power (78+ watts) is very good. 76-80 watts is my wife’s typical power/pace ceiling for these CTC gaspers. Although not an adaptive rower, spinal stenosis, disc deterioration, and restricted ROM makes her a legs & arms rower at best. She routinely does most of the monthly CTCs.So I just did 12 intervals and stopped after. Ergdata says I did 2188m which is BETTER THAN ANYTHING I EVER DID BEFORE!

I can see you in the Affiliation and Team sections, so looks like all working fine there.
For the C2CTC there is a thread on this forum where they announce the next event, and people ask for admin done (password resets, etc.). You can pop a message on there with the details of the old and new names and Dougie ("Citroen") should be able to do it in due course. Or you could send him a private message too.
Dave
EDIT - looks like Dougie spotted the request already and updated you.
