Way to go Ken and David A. I hope your back heals soon, bg. Good luck in you quest for 3M meters, but don't overdo it. Impressive metrics are nice, but they were created by human beings to help, not enslave, human beings.
hmmmm..take #2...hopefully this message will post :] thanks but the healing thoughts are for steve's back...i do find your perspective on metrics helpful...so easy for me to get caught up in numbers during my ultra running journey :} and happy st patrick's and/or evacuation day :)

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 3.16.17

Post by Kona2 » March 17th, 2017, 11:31 am

Image Image EVERYONE'S A BIT IRISH TODAY !

Yes, another episode of As The World Shamrock Spins! It's Day 17 or 18 of Mudness Madness, and vaporizations off the progress board continue...albeit more slowly. The Erging Universe loosed the grip of 200 from the 5 K a day board - surely it was centripetal force! (Lunies stayed at 37), and 50 fell from the 10K a day board (Lunies lost one, falling to 21!). :(

Image Lucky 7th!

1 FRENCH INDOOR ROWERS TEAM Virtual 1,346,759m 134 10,050m
2 Age Without Limits Virtual 1,216,314m 107 11,367m
3 Free Spirits Virtual 1,176,485m 73 16,116m
4 Fitness Matters Indoor Rowing Virtual 1,065,343m 86 12,388m
5 Greenville Indoor Rowing Health/Fitness 1,021,147m 172 5,937m
6 BCC Crew On-Water 792,171m 61 12,986m
7 LUNA-TICS Virtual 752,851m 46 16,366m

These Challenges are full of insidious little surprises! While chasing the Challenge goal, sometimes you find that you've exceeded your own expectations for the year...or maybe you didn't start with expectations, but now you see that there is a goal that is quite possible. Agree with Tombeur that we should resist being totally tied to the numbers...and celebrate where we are! Still....those goals loom large now that we are heading towards the annual meter finish line. WIth 44 or 45 days of possibility streaming ahead of us, here's what it looks like for some of the Lunie crew chasing the million meter and multi-millions goals: (PS - I used an arbitrary cut off of individual being within 300K of that next shiny goal)

Image Million Meter Target:

Steve W with (166,065 m) to go...an average of 3775 m a day for remainder of year will get you there...Wishing you rapid healing for back!

I had not heard of Evacuation Day. Looks like it is a local to you event to celebrate driving the British out of Boston area? And we thought it was all about driving the snakes out of Ireland !

Thanks for the well-wishes Tombeur, BG & Kona. Will heed the wise advice. Have several days purposefully banked, so can & will use them as necessary.

Kona, your hard work is amazing! Had not done the math but truly appreciate the computations. Like the little train, I think I can... :D.

I came across an article on Chris Bertish today. he would give even Ed a run for his money:
  • 93 consecutive days of marathon plus distances!
    On a stand up paddleboard!
    On open waters!
    Unsupported!
Oh, and he crossed the Atlantic...
Details at http://www.ybw.com/news-from-yachting-b ... sing-49198

Yesterday I saw on LinkedIn an old coworker of mine is going to try to run 230km+ in a twenty-four hour period this weekend https://ktkc.everydayhero.com/au/cameron

But neither of them are going to get on the Mud Season Madness honor board this year, and I still can if I stop making excuses for not being able to row today!

!
Those are both impressive feats! I am impressed by the gentleman planning to run 230+ km in only 24 hours! That's a pace of just over 10 min miles for 24 hours if my math is correct. One 10 minute mile would be a challenge for me. I did share this with my son, Adam, who is an ultra-marathon runner. He has run a couple of 100K's under his belt, but says a 230k is definitely out of his scope.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 3.17.17

Post by Kona2 » March 18th, 2017, 11:01 am

Image Day 18 or 19 of 31....Keep Going!

Mudness Challenge, and many of the other Challenges, have a bonus built in...finishing them builds confidence that we can tackle more Challenges successfully. I know. Heady stuff for early in the day. But I think about these things. We have a Global Marathon Challenge that hits us once a year here in the Erging Universe, and while some can just throw down these kinds of distances without too much build up, many of us cannot without preparing for them. The Mudness Challenge with its day in and day out seemingly unrelenting numbers is giving us that kind of preparation for the bigger distances ...SHOULD you decide to go for the Global Challenge. Even better, the World Erg Challenge is pushing the distance meter into mid-April...and after that...well it's only a skip and a hop to the May 1st time frame for the Global Marathon Challenge. Told you erging is addictive.

Vaporized another 200 from the 5K a day roster (lost one Lunie there...say a few kind words), and another 50 from the 10K a day roster. Lunies are at 36 participants for 5K, and 21 for 10K. Hang on...hang on...hang on!

Trying so. very. hard. not to be vaporized by month's end. Life keeps happening, though. It's crazy how much motivation is based on "hang on ... hang on ... hang on!" ... plus, the off-chance of winning free stuff ... :)

Don't let yourself be vaporized! I was and it's no fun :) But in reality life does happen and I new I wouldn't make mud season this year, with 6 days out of town to visit the folks, and 7 days of on call for work and my son coming to visit. I think this was my 1st miss for the mud season, now to focus on world erg and I will be limited on rowing till April 2nd, but when I can, I will get what I can done. I have a cold now and wasn't going to row but thought I'm going to try something different today and covered the monitor with a towel and put on some music, and just went at a pace I felt comfortable with. When I stopped, I tried to guess what my pace was and how long I rowed for before I revealed the monitor. I rowed appx. 4500 meters more than I thought I did and thought I was at 40 min. when I rowed for 1hour. I guess it shows how you can get lost when you don't see the monitor and don't have a clock around. I'm kinda starting to think marathon for the next challenge, which is hard for me to even consider. I did it once and said thats good enough, don't need to go there again :) yea it was painful. Lot's of inspiration though from this team with Andrew knocking out 100K session, Ed rowing almost a marathon a day, K2 and David riding crazy distances on bikes and Barb who doesn't ever seem to stop rowing and running, oh and then Bazzy who seems to climb every mountain he gets around, I do want to graduate from work some day too :) I haven't been on the team forum for while, guess I was a little chatty, happy healthy rowing to all.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress THru 3.19.17

Post by Kona2 » March 20th, 2017, 4:59 pm

Image Day 20 or 21 of 31...how low will we go?!

Well for starters, we'll go lower than we were yesterday! In the blink of an eye, without even a bunch of dust motes left behind, another hundred vanished from the virtual landscape of 5K a day. Similarly, 40 dearly departeds were removed from the 10K a day bunch. The numbers (as of this AM) stood at 2043 for the 5K (35 Lunies...alas and woe...another teammate zapped), and 746 (21 Lunies) for the 10K a dayers. Now this is really excellent participation - especially in the 10K a day portion of the Erging Universe! What could be going on here?! Drama and suspense...and yes, life, that doesn't always comply with the goals we thought we were headed toward!

Ha! It was perhaps with some degree of naivete that I first called the Challenge Roster disappearances "vaporizations". Upon looking for an image for vaporizers, let's just say that I was a bit surprised to find that I was in the paraphernalia batches until I called up STEAM vaporizer...and here I was GOING to mention that you'll never look at a vaporizer in quite the same way....

Hang on...hang on...hang on...!

Wowzer! We've got a boatload of milestones to celebrate! Good work Lunies (even if you've been vaporized...there's the World Erg Challenge!)
