Hello Loonie friend!

For those who don't know me, I am an on-the-water-rower from New Haven, CT who does not erg much between the months of April and November as my time is spent on the water. I tend not to follow the forum as much when I am on the water, so I am a bit out of touch. Kudos to everyone on all the accomplishments you have made.

Usually I jump back on the erg and become more engaged in the forum starting with the holiday challenge. This year was the first year since 2008 that I have not done that challenge. I had a shoulder injury. Luckily it wasn't a tear and surgery wasn't needed, but I had to stop rowing back in August and never made it back on the water this year. Through PT and cortisone shots it has gotten much better. I have been procrastinating getting back on the erg, but feel that it is about time that I do. I will be signing up for the Jan. challenge, but want you to know that my performance will be minimal compared to what I have done in past years.

I probably won't be checking the forum all the time, so don't hesitate to send me a personal message if you have a question for me.

Happy New Year!

Karyn

Good grief ...barely got the 100K posted...and dang if Andrew hadn't crossed the 200K...good thing AJ gave me 200K graphic!
Well what a nice surprise! Thank you AJ, what a great likeness! You did not have much to work with! Thanks to K2 and Minnie as well (although I am not quite exactly what part you played in the lobby :?), and to danwho and Thor for the recognition.

And well done to bg, Norma and K2 on your canoes! And to the three or four more that will be launched in the next 24 hours!

Oh, and welcome back Wim, (although I wasn't around when you were last here), I've found that the LUNA-TICS are adversely affection my cycling exercise too!

And welcome Karyn, I hope your recovery is swift.

Hey new folks. Karyn didn’t say enough. She is our resident expert in rowing. I can and will help but she is truly the pro with technique and stuff. Nice to see you again Karyn and I hope that shoulder gets back to normal so you can kick some butt next season on the water.
Your not so secret admirer. Grin.

Image Ha. Better late than not at all. I didn't notice this back when I originally posted the image during the Holiday Challenge....I was thinking then about how rowing was connected to our journey into the stars with the abbreviation morphing into starport with Holiday Challenge colors. But today....well, I'm thinking that these flip flops are flipped....because when you are facing forward, I'm pretty sure starboard is on the right and port is on the left....and that makes the whole flip flop image much more fun...I just missed it the first go round...it's the little things!

Hi Team,

Great to see the canoes making there marks in this challenge... I wanted to give a shoutout to my training partner Thor - I commented to him I don't mind the muscle soreness I get from rowing, it is when my butt starts talking very loudly that I hate. He told me a few things - the one I tried and worked out fantastic for me was... I bought a new towel and folded to fit the seat perfect. All the difference in the world - no soreness at all my last three rows. Muscle yes, butt no! Something so simple that I never thought of.

Also a shoutout to Andrew - keep setting the pace team mate... great meters.

Happy Rowing all,
Ed

Image Another episode...bunny trails of the mind

The snow band that's moving east in the US is a bit of a whopper, so be careful out there. Equally, the office germ pools are teeming with different challenges. In both cases, sometimes all you can do is wait them out for the duration. Still, after what seemed like a lot of days being kind of cooped up due to the elements, yesterday's temperatures looked promising for some outside time here. The snow would make for a good backdrop to spot urban wildlife (other than the ubiquitous coyote). Deer or fox would be ok, but no moose please.

Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge is located in Arvada, a bordering city. At just 72 acres, it's the smallest wildlife refuge in the urban national system. I'd biked past the area many times in the summer and fall, but hadn't walked through it. Camera in hand, I headed out. Lots of people using the trails for some cross country ski time, and snowshoe tracks as well. In fact, I wished I had worn snowshoes. Slogging only about a mile around the loops took its toll, and the planned "just one more rowing hour" was the tradeoff for an experience in the "this is NEW" category. I rationalized that it was probably time to back off on the erging for the week anyway. Hahaha.

Image Image

There were four or five geese on the water in the photo to the right - as I walked (crunching snow is SO loud) towards the bridge that would help me see into the water - well, I was too noisy and they took off before I could get camera out. Rats. Lots of fox tracks, probably some of the ubiqui-coyote, too. I bet there are a few gems near you....check 'em out when you need a break from the erg discipline! https://www.fws.gov/urban/

Awesome I remember that hat now - all three of my passions Rowing, Masters and Seahawks! Couldn't be any better!

The Hawks looked good - worth getting up at 3am to watch. Thank God for sling box... keep in touch with home.

I switched to using ErgData, and was under the impression that it logs my workouts. It claimed to be uploading them, but after checking the logbook it didn't work.

Looking in the FAQ it claimed that it only works if you're not using a log card, so I tried removing the card but couldn't get it to work either. I guess I'll do some more reading about this. But for now, back to RowPro it is.

Edit: It looks like due to the known issues with ErgData, I'm sticking to the log card and will just read it into RowPro and upload through there for now.

Sorry you are having trouble with ergdata. I use the IPhone 5S, PM5 and I like it a lot. I did have the PM4 with my phone and the only thing I didn't like is that the battery on the phone sometimes got quite low on longer pieces and the silliness of the iphones not having a port just for charging. I then upgraded to the PM5 and all is solved. Maybe you need to reconnect the phone without having the card in? Anyway, hope you get it all working correctly.
