I'll ride the coattails of the other newbies and introduce myself, though I've been lurking for a couple of weeks now. Love the camaraderie I see in this team.
I'm a 43-year-old Missourian, slightly overweight and looking to change that. Have been battling an arthritic spine, which has limited my ability to consistently engage in many activities I'd been doing for fitness (martial arts, dance, running). Thus the "slightly overweight" part!
Thus far the spine seems to be taking well to erging, though I generally fare much better when I do evening sessions vs. my preferred morning sessions.
In July, I started using the erg at my gym. I'm hooked. Purchased my own C2 model D several weeks ago so I don't have to wait for the
one erg to become free (seriously? They could buy 4 more for the price of the Jacob's ladder that nobody uses!).
I'm not yet at the point where I'm following any consistent training plan. Going more for gradual endurance and building core strength as a foundation for possible later training for speed. I'm doing this as a lifestyle habit, not for competition.
I wasn't sure I caught your name on the team roster, so for now I'll say Welcome ingtwai !!!
Glad to hear the erg is working for you, without aggravating any spine issues.
So far, I haven't been to Missouri, although I enjoyed reading Steve's accounts of the Missouri River 340.
But I guess I may have been on a Missouri Boat Ride a time or two.
(And I guess I have to confess to watching Outlaw Josey Wales more than once for that reference to come to mind so quickly.)

Sign on...sign on...sign on!
And welcome to those who have signed on to the Challenge team!
Flatirons... from the US 36 Bikeway. The Flatirons are rock formations in the western United States, near Boulder, Colorado, consisting of sandstone - part of what is known as the Fountain Formation. Not going all geologist on you - Wiki is a good generalist resource. There are five large, numbered Flatirons ranging from north to south (First through Fifth, respectively) along the east slope of Green Mountain (elev. 8,148 ft (2,484 m)), and the term "The Flatirons" sometimes refers to these five alone. According to Wiki: Geologists estimate the age of these rocks as 290 to 296 million years; they were lifted and tilted into their present orientation between 35 and 80 million years ago. The Flatirons were subsequently exposed by erosion. Other manifestations of the Fountain Formation can be found in many places along the Colorado Front Range, including Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs, Roxborough State Park in Douglas County, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Morrison.
Here's Garden of the Gods formations (Colorado Spring)
Roxborough State Park
Flatirons of Boulder (since you can't see the formations as clearly in my photo)
So...you get the idea of what flatirons formations are! Sounds better than sandstone slabs...

Welcome to the team! As you probably have seen from the comradarie here - it's all about the team, fun interaction, help if you need it. We don't worry about your meters!!! Have fun enjoy the ride...

Welcome.
Congratulations on getting your own erg. It makes it easier to row whenever you want, and, hopefully, to set up a exercise routine for yourself.

Thanks David. I am wired for endurance so I hope to keep the momentum up. I did however break my little toe later that same night and then had to travel for work Sun-Wed. I knocked out 9150 meters tonight - 9/15 -today being my birthday.

danwho wrote:Welcome, Cheryl !!! I know you'll make your million. As far as novices go, funny thing about rowing ... no matter how many meters have gone by, it seems everyone remains a novice.
Way to knock out the 15, Taylor. Regarding the posterior ... K2 knows a lot of tricks in that department, bubble wrap, etc. I'm more of a whittler, myself, but the big meter folks know all the tricks. Ed, did you end up trying out that tractor seat attachment? You will definitely not be transitioning from Forest Gump to Sorest Rump.
Thanks Dan...It was fun. I broke my toe that same night and the left the next day for a work trip but in honor of my dreaded birthday today, I managed to get in 9150 meters
It smarts a wee bit but I can at least get in 10k each day for the next 3 that I'm home. I promise I will log at least 100k for the Fall challange!

Scoops1234 wrote:Hi guys
Hope you don't mind but I have joined your team. I figured I may as well introduce myself....
I am a 40 year old mum of 2 (5 year old and a 9 month old) from York (UK) who has always struggled with fitness. I have been overweight for as long as I can remember and have never been particularly good at any sort of sport. I have swam distances in the dim and distant past but not for a long long time.
Anyway a couple of years ago I decided enough was enough and I started to use a personal trainer. 3 months later I fell pregnant!! However, I trained as much as I could through pregnancy and since giving birth to my gorgeous daughter have really stepped up training. I feel my body shape has changed and my fitness levels have improved massively. Through my pt I discovered I loved (and was reasonably) good at indoor rowing. That was it I have been thoroughly bitten by the bug and have set myself a challenge to row 1million metres this season.
Joined this team as I was reading through this thread and thought you all sound like a friendly bunch. Plus i love the idea of rowing into space as a team!! Hope you don't mind having a complete novice in it!
Welcome Scoops1234! I can relate to the weight gain but you have a better reason than me! We can do this!!!

Hi everyone...
I turned 56 today -- not happy about it by any means but I except it. I rowed 9150 today --- not exactly a brilliant idea but it was the best I could think of
I was gone Sunday through late Tuesday night. I broke my little toe last Saturday night thanks to Hewlett Packard. Was chatting with tech support to fix my brand new printer and when the tech lost me on the online chat window, he called my cell phone. Phone was in the front of my house and I was in the back in my office so I ran up the hall to try and grab the call and clipped my toe on a bench in the hall. It was seriously broken so I made a splint with a finger nail file, yanked it back into place and taped it to the other toes
My new name is TayGyver. Sunday morning before my flight I got in 2000 meters as a test and while not exactly comfortable, I was able to row. There was no way I was going to allow the Fall Challenge to start without posting so I am glad I powered through it. I am home until Sunday afternoon so I hope to get in another 30K before then. Ill be back next Thursday. Cheers everyone. I look forward to reading about all your accomplishments! xoxo
