LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.

A member of an indoor rowing team or club? If so, this is the place for you.

Can this one team row to the moon and back?

It sure was! It was my first 1/2 marathon, I started rowing a month or so ago and I'm loving every minute of it! Former distance runner and cyclist so it definitely fits for me. After I get a few more of these under my belt I want to start doing full marathons.

The Fall Team Challenge is a club challenge where club members try to reach either 100,000 meters or 200,000 meters by the end of the challenge. Meters may be accumulated on the indoor rower, the SkiErg, or a combination of the two. There are prizes for those who reach either of these distances, as well as a prize draw for all clubs with at least ten participants reaching 100,000m. To either start or join a team, visit the Teams page of your logbook.

Full instructions can be found on the Fall Team Challenge page.

Club challenge means that we are not eligible as a virtual team for prizes. We enjoy ALL Challenges anyway !!
Does that mean that we are not eligible for the individual prizes (ie. for completing the 100k or 200k) or is that just the club prizes?

Correct. We get to earn our Holiday Challenge pins with 200K during the November-December fete, AND we have some of our best opportunities during the Mudseason Challenge (formerly known as March Madness). During Mudness, you are betting that YOUR entry of 5000 or 10000 m will win you Concept2 prizes.

For perspective, the online Concept2 community has exploded exponentially in the last five years. Since we don't pay to play, except with our meters, I can only imagine how much we strain the marketing budget for Concept2. Great that Concept2 has partnered with Cafe Press - and once we earn the link to the goodies offered by cafepress.com, we can purchase whatever is most meaningful to us to celebrate completion of the challenge.

Thanks for the clarification! Gotta get all the swag I can! I missed out on Mudseason last year, i'll have to get it this time around. If only we could cash in our meters, now that would be some incentive!

I also saw you have an IndoRow in Chicago. I remember reading good things about them a while ago, but they use a WaterRower, so probably not the best choice if you want to learn technique for a C2.
Wow this is good info...thank you! I am having trouble figuring out how to properly reply to posts in this forum so forgive me if this is not the right way.

This past week while gone, I found myself really missing it so I think I am hooked. I am a former distance runner and road cyclist. I think I am wired for long, repetitive activity. I turn on a movie and just row through it. I am not trying to be fast, just focusing on rowing properly. I would like to find a place in Chicago to get some training if anyone knows of such a place. Thanks so much. I hope I can contribute to the team in some small way.
welcome :] btw...i'm also a runner,,,rowing is part of my cross training...what distances did you run???
I was a 1/2 and full marathon runner until my knees said "no more" - My dad called me Forest Gump in the late 90's before he past away because I would go out for 15 mile runs on Cape Cod when I visited my folks. I was never a fast runner, just a steady one. I loved finding my zone and just running in silence. I miss it every day now. My heart and mind still wants to run...but my knees have a different idea

Hi Taylor
Welcome to the team.
We are a mixed bag of folks here. Some row a lot of meters and some are probably faster. There is no requirements to be a member. We love recognising milestones and accomplishments. Feel free to ask questions and I’m sure you will get some great advice. Some of the folks here have rowed over 30 million meters. Nope, not me. Grin.
I think the most important thing to remember about the stroke is as you do the stroke say, legs, back, arms. Break it in to 3 movements that flow together. Not just all at one time. Personally I find my lower back gets tired a lot faster and gets to hurting if I do all three movements at once.

One of my rowing buddies says “rowing is great, you can learn it in one day and spend the rest of your life perfecting it.” I rowed 4 million last season and I’m still working on technique. Keep your head up too. It will help keep your back straight. Every meter is a good meter.

Have fun and just Keep On Rock’n.
Thank you so much...I have the basics down and am focused on building stamina. I am focused on intervals with short rest periods in between for the time being. It gives me a chance to drink some water and wipe off the sweat. My back is holding up well and I am experimenting with things. My longest distance so far has been 16k broken into 2k intervals with 2 minute rests in between. I watched a movie and drank 72 ounces of water --- I felt great when I finished. I am getting stronger already in just 6 weeks of using it. I could kick myself for not buying it a year ago when i realized I was in a downward spiral. I am actually not dreading winter now because I know I can row my way through it.

Well crap...the Rowfit place went out of business  Chicago is terrible. San Diego, my home, had so many rowing enthusiasts because the CrossFit community was so strong there. I learned to row at Invictus and Shane Farmer was a trainer there. I am not really sure if I understand how joining his program works remotely but I am going to consider it for winter. Are you familiar with Dark Horse Rowing?

Welcome.
I moved from San Diego to Cincinnati, mmfmfm  years ago. I also did a lot of road cycling, but not racing. With weather, kids, etc. I can't do it so much, but rowing is great, and I can do it whenever.
There is no need to fast, or to go any particular number of meters. I would just set some goals for yourself, and keep at it.

David
Thanks David...I am still terribly homesick. Chicago is not a friendly city on top of the crappy weather. I am hoping the company I relocated to work for will let me move back west next year. I manage sales and travel 80% of the time so it is somewhat irrelevant where I live. I am thinking Denver perhaps. I am proud of myself so far for being committed to getting on the erg whenever I can. Today I was chained to my computer for 12 hours dealing with work but I managed to get in 4500 meters before supper. I am optimistic for the first time in over a year here. Regarding cycling --- I was a road and criterium racer - CAT 3 - I was a strong sprinter, good twitch muscles back in the day. I still love to ride but not here -- People drive like they are in a Mad Max movie

Post by Kona2 » September 1st, 2016, 6:11 pm

Whoooooooosh! That's the sound of you and your erg flying through ANOTHER month!

Can't believe it's September 1st already...but here we are...getting ready for the Fall Team Challenge! Sign on...sign on....sign on! It's the orange season, and leaves are starting to change.

Meanwhile, I've gotten calls from several neighbors today warning of the presence of Pepe Le Pew. Or maybe it is Pepita, as apparently this skunk is really big and folks think it might be a pregnant one. Stuff I read says mating season is February and March for these stinkos, so I bet it's just a well fed one. That's just what else I needed...snort. It's always something, isn't it??? Please don't let this story play out like it might....

Sorry to hear about Rowfit. How about Iron & Oar? I looked at their Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/ironandoar), and saw a post from Aug 22, so unless there is some conspiracy going on ...
I have heard of Shane Farmer. I have had an interest in Crossfit for some time, but never really participated. I don't really know about Dark Horse Rowing, but I like the name. I like the name Iron&Oar too, for that matter.
Now, I also see there is a Chicago Indoor Rowing Championship - or CIRC - not to be confused with Cirque du Soleil.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone. I am really appreciative of the spirit here. I like being part of a team. It inspires me. I crossed the 200k marker tonight, 6 weeks into erg ownership and I can honestly say that I feel completely motivated to make it to 1 million by Christmas. I got his! Thanks everyone. It feels good to have a goal in life that does not involve my job.
