Holiday Rowing Challenge

Post by Kona2 » November 13th, 2008, 12:22 am

Here's the info on the Holiday rowing challenge and the organizations that our meters will go to: Cool stuff ! I am sure we will rise to the challenge!

Looking for a little extra motivation to row this holiday season? Then look no further! Our Holiday Challenge is for you!
The Details

* Row 100,000 meters or 200,000 meters between November 27 (U.S. Thanksgiving) and December 24 at midnight (Eastern Time)
* You do not need to be on a team to participate! Log your individual meters.
* Record indoor rower meters only (no on-water meters, please!)
* Kid's Holiday Challenge allows kids (aged 16 and under) to participate at 50,000 meters
* Adaptive rowers can choose to participate at the 50K, 100K, or 200K levels
* Deadline for entering meters: January 4th, 2009

Support a Good Cause with Meters Rowed

Besides helping you maintain your fitness and fend off holiday weight gain and stress, we’re giving you the option of supporting a good cause with your meters rowed. Consider it a holiday gift to the planet.

For every person that rows at least 100k during the challenge, Concept2 will donate $.02 for every kilometer (1000 meters) you row to your choice of the following organizations: The Nature Conservancy, Conservation International or to the Alliance for Climate Protection. And once you get beyond 100k, we’ll donate $.04 per kilometer rowed. Our goal through this group effort is to raise a total $50,000 to support these causes. The usual prizes of pin and certificate will still be awarded as well. Note: For Kids and Adaptive rowers, the $.04 rate will take effect at 50k.

In recent years, we have had around 5000 people participate in the Holiday Challenge! We are hoping that this new incentive will bring in even more people and encourage past participants to row more meters than ever to help us reach our goal. Please invite your friends to join us. Our strength is in our numbers. It’s like rowing an eight: when you all work together in synchrony, you become greater than the sum of the parts.

Stay tuned to your online logbook for how to select your organization for this year's Holiday Challenge.

OK... But supposing I want to row outside for this challenge and I just happen to set up and row my Concept II on a frozen lake! I guess those meters wouldn't count because I'm "on the water"???? Or maybe Dan C wants to set up and row his Concept II on the deck of a pontoon boat as it goes out for a spin around the bay? That would be "on the water" too. Or maybe they just mean "only Concept II rowing meters" rather than "no on-water meters"?

Sorry, I think I may be suffering from post canoe season syndrome.

Image Since you are thinking of rowing on frozen lakes, there is the Rowtography Contest that Concept2 is sponsoring....the idea being to showcase Concept2 products in various unique settings.....searching for just the right location might help with the PCS syndrome..... :D Image

It's a FULL moon....we're all a little more Luna-Tic !

Yep, the Fam is puttin on the heat! I am making myself stay off the rower until the Holiday Challenge starts to make sure the foot is good and healed.

We moved the C2 upstairs (out of the garage) so we could park the car in there for the winter. It seems to be a more attractive environment for the exercise.

I'm a 49-er, searching for Gold in the Holiday challenge! Image
Since LA has no NFL team, I might as well root for my dad's home town.

Actually yesterday's row felt pretty good, no pain at all. :D I'm wearing the heart monitor consistently now and not letting my HR get above 150 (much!), even if I feel fine. I was at times reaching 170+... which would be higher than my theoretical maximum (220-50=170) :? . I seem to get the best workout between 140-150.
:)

new 'reasonable' goal - reach 500K by the end of 2008.

I received a pin with the first million tee shirt, which was quite thrilling, and I stuck it into my cork bulletin board. After that, I've just checked the box that says "no pin" when selecting incentive prizes ... not very piratey, but I do like Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow!

Same from me!
Just a quick note way too late/early in the night/morning here in the UK. I am glad that I have found an erg at the hotel (actually there are two: a model D and a model C!) and was able to row twice (posted). I hope to row some more in the upcoming days.

Happy rowing!

Andrea,

You didn't have to go all the way to the UK to get away from the Calif. fires. Is your area OK?

Dan -

Andrea is in No Cal, far from these fires. I am in the LA basin, while the fires are NOT near me, I must say that the smoke is. My yard is covered in ash and even indoors I felt short of breath as I rowed tonite. The nearest fire is in Sylmar, about 45 minutes north of me.

My Uncle lives in Montecito, the fires were within 1 mile of his home.

All are continuing to burn out of control, pray for rain.

Gina
