Ah, I remember when I learned about Noor... the Arabic name meaning Light.
I didn't notice the relationship of Nyquist to Noor right away (http://www.pedigreequery.com/nyquist), but I definitely defer to you on such matters.
It occurred to me, while I was reading all the names in various pedigree charts, that maybe we should have a Kentucky Erg-by, where we all get some horse names. I thought of that when I got to "Political Parfait" in Nyquist's pedigree chart.
Now which one of My Favorite Martians wants to be the announcer?

Kentucky Erg-by......tell me more. Sounds like you and Drivetofast have to put some details to this thought. The Kentucky Derby is May 7th, and the Belmont Stakes is June 11th. That's a span of 35 or 36 days. Could use the first week of May to get your horse names, and then what happens?

Hmmm, the Kentucky Derby is a 2K... that seems like something to work with. I will think about this tonight.
In the meantime, I saw this Random Horse name generator: http://www.horses-names.com/random-horse-names.php
I clicked the button and got 3 names, and one of them was Lunatic. What are the odds of that?

I'll go local with Shotgun Betty.

K2, still waiting for some inspirational idea for the KentERGy Derby. I think I just liked the idea of those names, but I like the real names much better than the names from the random name generators. Not sure if I'm hitting the bottom of the barrel, but now I'm looking at board games for inspiration.

I only drink beer out, and then it depends upon what's on tap. Currently, at our local brew pub, Polskie Piwo sounds interesting. It's supposed to emulate the light, Polish lager, Zywiec. Or perhaps I'd go with their standard Amber Ale.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9isyXCN0yY A Horse Race Challenge..
I can hear it now....charge your horses!

Image And now we turn (or return) to the olde English roots (square and otherwise)...

Furlongs, fortnights, and stones...distance, time and weight..

danwho talked about the Derby being a 2K distance...and I know I'm always hunting around for which race in the Triple Crown is the longest or the shortest ...which brings us to the first of our throwback words...the furlong. A furlong is 220 yards, and seems to have been derived from the average distance of the plowed furrow. Big fields. The Kentucky Derby is 10 furlongs on May 7th, the Preakness is 9.5 furlongs on May 21st and the Belmont is 12 furlongs on June 11th. For our purposes, these distances are going to be 10,000 meters, 9500 meters and 12,000 m. Those seeking to run their horses in the Challenge, will need to erg those meter totals on the day before the specific race. Horse names will be chosen from the 2016 Derby contenders...right now it looks like there are easily a top 30 rated horses to choose names from. Once you get a horse name, you ride that horse for the entire Challenge. And if it just so happens that the REAL horse gets into the Derby and wins it...well, you are truly special.

Soon as you post (there's another horse racing term) a 10,000 m distance, you'll discover which horse you're riding....get your 10K distance done in the next few days...

Fortnights and stones both revolve (in different ways) around the number 14. A fortnight is 14 days, and 1 stone is equivalent to 14 lbs. I just threw those in there because they are measures we don't use too much here in the US.

Gents and gals...get your horses!

So, for the Challenge, does the 10 K need to be rowed in a single session (like a marathon)?

bg, this is just a challenge that we are making up, not an official C2 challenge. It is inspired by the Kentucky Derby.
K2's post above has the details so far.
You row 10K in the next few days to get your race horse name.
Then you row 10K the day before the May 7th Kentucky Derby (which is a race of 10 furlongs).
Then you row 9.5K the day before the May 21st Preakness (which is a race of 9.5 furlongs).
Then you row 12K the day before the June 11th Belmont (which is a race of 12 furlongs).
Now, there's just the fine-tuning kind of questions - like Norma's question about "in one rowing session".
(And there's no rule about whether you drink your mint julep before or after.)

Yikes! Just realized I will be flying home from Oakland, CA late on May 6th. Uh oh, might mean a 2 am row.

Not at all - just needs to be that total. And for those who are struggling to figure out how to fit this into their weeks, I guess if you row your entry any time between Monday and the Friday before the race, we can make it all work. I will see if I can create a summary (although I thought that's what it was that I threw out there). Details are open for discussion. I just gave us a starting point.

And some other thoughts: since there are many factors that I haven't even a clue about in this, I just ran a query about 2016 Derby eligible horses. I'm using that list since I don't know which horses are going to do the Derby. There's a couple of important races here and there this weekend that may produce some qualifiers. So. If you want to play in this Challenge that we're sort of making up as we go, maybe just tell me and I'll watch for the numbers to roll in and get you a horse name. Have given out two already.

Norma -- Songbird
Jean M --- Danzing Candy

Hahaha - and if Jay K comes into the team again, well there's even a horse named Cupid (since he seemed to land on that name for other Challenges)
