A little birdie told me that there's a Five-Million-Meter Man out there. Congrats, Mighty Thor, on 5 MM lifetime meters!

Re: Marathon Challenge Coming to an Erg near You.
I did my first 1/2 marathon on the weekend. Didn't push myself too hard as I just wanted to focus on finishing the distance. Padding on the seat is great advice as mine was aching pretty good during the last 5,000m. And something I read in the forum that has been a HUGE help for long distances and daily rows is wrapping the handles with nylon (sounds crazy, but it works... buy a pair of nylons from the dollar store, cut the legs off, and wrap one around each side). Since doing that, and learning to hook my fingers over the handle instead of gripping it like a bat, I haven't had any problems with blisters at all. Good luck!just27 wrote:Same concept (pun intended!), when I was edging toward my first HM. I'd read that after you've done a half dozen 10K in a row, you're basically ready for a HM. Those 10K's on my log page gave me the confidence to go for my first half marathon; then, as Nike challenges, "Just Do It." Make sure you have enough water readily to hand; maybe wrap your hands with tape, so no hot spots distract you. And, big AND, get some padding on that seat. Good luck!Kona2 wrote:I suggest doing several 10K pieces over a period of a couple of weeks - then do a couple of 15Ks. At some point, well - you will just go for it. Perseverance...it's all about psychology. You watch the numbers drop below 20,000 and it seems like such a long time to the next 10,000 m....so look at it in 2K increments, or a 5K increment....once you've reached 9,000 m to go...you're home free. Stay at a steady pace. We'll be watching for it!HeathM wrote:I've been contemplating trying to work up to the half marathon ... maybe I could work up to this. Have found lots of training plans for full marathons, but nothing for half. Any advice or good info sources you all would recommend? Just take full marathon plan and halve everything?

Congratulations! The back side can bark pretty hard - glad you fought through it... Great accomplishment!

I'm with Ed on getting a cushion for the seat, my 1st and only,so far, marathon was on a model E at 24 hr fitness when I was on vacation last year.No seat cushion or gloves and the last 10 k was to say the least painful! Thanks to Thor for reminding us of that upcoming challenge. Every year, I say I'm going to do the marathon for the challenge but end up only doing 1 or 2 half marathons, so it's in my head again, and I will start doing some longer sessions. When I think of the marathon I always try to remember that there are people that accomplish the 100k, which just thinking of that should make the 42k easy...right.. maybe not. has anyone of you Lunies done a 100k?

Congrats! The nylons thing does sound crazy, lol, but am going to have to try that one!Navelgarden wrote:

Congratulations Mighty Thor on 5 big hammers !!!!!
And congratulations Navelgarden on your half-marathon. I hadn't heard the nylons trick. I had heard about wrapping socks made with nylon. Almost tried that once, but Victoria's Secret didn't have any tube socks. Next time, the Dollar Store.

Nylons ey? Hmm. I used to where gloves and tried the towel and really got blisters from that. I just row bare handed lately and it works fine. I might just try the nylons though. I guess one would cut off the cute little feet too. Grin.

I think the most I've ever done in one day is over 50K. I can't even imagine 100K. Whoop, whoop and way to go! Congratulations, Peter, on your FIRST EVER half moon....as the half marathon is affectionately known here in Luna-Tics land. We joke, somewhat, about FIRST EVERS....but I can guarantee that every one of us who has ever done a half marathon remembers the first one....and the total elation of finishing it! Well done!
PS - I cant wait to see what kind of graphic danwho comes up with for the nylons on the handles....I had never heard of this technique....

Hello friends!
I skimmed through the discussions on marathons and half-marathons. I have only done one full erg marathon in my life, but I've done a bunch of halves. I liked the suggestion of doing some 10k and 15k pieces building up to it. You don't want to go from 30 minutes on the erg to two hours or whatever it will take you. It is okay if your are not the fastest erger. You don't have to go for a world record. Set a goal to simply finish the piece. You can always work on getting faster on later attempts. When I do the longer pieces, I will often adjust the damper so that my drag factor is lower (less strain on the back). I also recommend finding a good movie to watch. That definitely distracts me from the erg itself while tackling the 21,097m. Good luck to all who try.
