Thanks for the motivation
I had been off the forum since the JVC. For some reason I had trouble accessing it. Not sure if it was my computer or the site. Either way, it seems to have rectified itself and I am back. I have just read 12 pages of messages and can confirm that we are LUNA-TICS.
As I was reading I came across my name. I didn't realize that I was approaching 400k. I've taken a few days off from the erg, but maybe I need to get back on and reach for that next mark. Thanks for pointing this out to me.

Re: Erging in the middle of the night??
Yep, AJ's my Luna-Tic husband. He's from New Orleans, which is how I know your locale ... LSU spring break! He doesn't fish, but he does like sushi. Fair Oaks is a suburb of Sacramento (Nor Cal) which, oddly, has a sign on the Hwy 50/I-80 merge noting that Ocean City, Maryland is 3073 miles away.Toothdoc wrote: Chris,
Is AJ your main squeeze? Does he fish? Are in N Calif.?

All In A Day's ERG: Team Stats for 2.26.08
Way to row through the stormy Atlantic yesterday, Luna-Tics! Great day!
Team boat was hit by giant wave while in the Atlantic, and one team member was swept overboard during tornadic winds (don't know if all this can really happen but go with it). We have confirmed that she is safe as her water wings deployed upon sea entry. Signal beacon led Karyn G to team boat after being lost in virtual waters for all 12 pages of our current voyage.
Total meters on the day for the team = 170,072 m
36% of oars in the virtual water.
Total meters on the season = 30,073,976 m. We are in 14th place overall.
Milestones:
400K Tina J
Mega Rowers:
23, 481 m Dan C
22,012 m Barb G
19,427 m Andrea C (You go girl!)
Keep your wits about you and row strong!

Hey! I like that: Sea Conditions. We may have to incorporate that one in our daily reports!
In the meantime, space boat is preparing for March Madness and NARC. We're tuning up/overhauling the ergs, ramping up our speeds and distances... nearing the one-tenth of the way to the moon marker as a team.

Ever consider a literary (certainly not literal) career, Jan? It appears that Dan, Barb, and Andrea were busy generating electricity on their rowers yesterday, in case that weather hit the power grids. Hey, I wonder if you could actually do that ... probably an hour's rowing would generate enough electricity to make a smoothie in the blender. (But it's a thought for when we're on the dark side of the moon.)

Another two-day row. Sorry to mess up the statistics, but I row *very* late at night (sometime past midnight , and either the meters are posted by the C2 log the next "day" or I am downloading batches...
Pause today, then a few more days of rowing, then off to skiing (hopefully) for almost a week .
Will try to do 25 days of at least 5k in March, though.
Happy rowing!
Andrea

Funny that you mention generating electricity, as I was thinking about that as an "option" when we had the power outage during the early January storm in the Bay area .just27 wrote:Kona2 wrote:it appears that Dan, Barb, and Andrea were busy generating electricity on their rowers yesterday, in case that weather hit the power grids. If anybody has advice on this, let us know .
Happy rowing,

RE: Team stats for Wednesday
Andrea - no worries. I thought maybe that had happened - still a lot of meters in a couple of days. Darryl B and I were pretty close at third mega.

There are enough engineers in my family that someone will know how to hook up the ergs to make a mini-grid. It can't be much different than those who hook up treadmills or stationary bikes to run their TVs, etc. I'll bet Concept2 has answered this question before also - I'll run it by them.
"I can pedal at most ~150W on an exercise bike (enough power for about 2 incandescent bulbs or 5 CFL bulbs). And that is pedalling continuously.
I think this would provide less than the power of 1 light bulb, and the cost to set up a custom circuit would never be worth it. Just my initial gut feeling as an engineer."
YesBut, we row with so much more enthusiasm than those people on stationary bicycles ... !

RE: Using Ergs To Produce Electricity
How right you are, Chris! (This is becoming a theme!)
Concept2 engineering staff was quick to respond with an acknowledged canned answer as this is a frequent question. Here's the response:
This is a fairly old subject that has been gaining a lot of interest of late. Note that the Model D&E utilize a rotating magnet ring and non-contacting coil type of generator to run the PM3 and to recharge the batteries of the PM4. These are both pretty low-power applications that do not significantly change the flywheel speed characteristics or the "feel" of the rower. Try hooking up a generator to run your TV and you're into major changes in how the machine feels and responds. Not that it can't be done, but it would be a pretty major undertaking. One could argue that the rower is pretty effective as an air-moving device, which is a major component of many home heating systems. Many exercise devices dump their excess energy into a heat sink, so you could say that these machines are effectively heating the room they are in (not to mention the sweaty body running them). The reality is that there isn't a lot of energy available from your average user.
I was intrigued by some of the ideas in an article about utilizing "parasitic" or ambient energy. A flooring that generates power when people walk on it- can you imagine how much power might be available in a subway station at rush hour? C2JonW
Suggests that we are more likely to reduce power usage by lowering thermostat a few degrees to offset the heat we are generating....quite a few bucks per degree lowered.

Naw, I'd actually decided to only add that "signature" once a week or when I got a PB ... not that I don't heed everything you say! Gotta run ... wondering if I put in a few extra meters when I get home at 11pm, if I'll be too revved to sleep.Toothdoc wrote:Chris,
Please put your #s back up. I was kiding. If I had your #s I'd have them up is a 48 pt font.

For those of you who have been wondering "Where's Tom?" and "How's He Doing?" - he's posted an update in the teams section of the forum!
HUH? Can you explain this to me? What is the teams section and how do I get to it? I have been wondering how you all get to see other teams too. I am a little behind here.
