Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
The reason that Ron isn't providing updates himself (albeit using one hand to type!) is that back when he went to Scotland, his email was hacked. One of the things that happened, was that the Concept2 forum that we are all using identified his internet IP address as a source of spam and permanently banned that IP address from accessing the site. Ron talked to Dena at the Concept2 business side, but they are not able to do anything - even though all the spam was not generated by Ron. The forum is run by a third party site. Once Ron is feeling a bit better, he will talk with his internet provider about getting a different IP address. I told him he could go to the library or a lot of places and get onto the forum site. He just isn't up to that at the moment. So, I will try and capture a lot of the well wishes and send them to him in a document because he can't even see the get well thoughts that we're sending.Drivetofast wrote:Does anyone know how Ron is doing?
I will ask Ron if he has a message that he wants to send, and see if I can pass this along to the team. It is hard enough to go through some life changing events with support, and I know we would all like to provide that support to him.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Another total lunar eclipse is happening tonight - and certainly some of our night owl teammates will get the opportunity to see this, Minnie.
From Business Insider today:
On Wednesday, Oct. 8, you will get the chance to see one of the rarest types of lunar eclipse, called a selenelion or horizontal eclipse. But you have to be quick — the crazy light trick will only be visible for a short period between two and nine minutes.
Most of the time, a lunar eclipse will occur well before sunrise, but that won't be the case on Wednesday morning. The Earth will pass between the sun and moon, eclipsing the moon in the process, which will begin at 6:25 a.m. EDT and last through sunrise, but only on the east coast.
That means during a brief window people on the east coast of the country will be able to see the sun rise and moon set at the same time. This rare event is referred to as a selenelion or horizontal eclipse.
There are plenty of times throughout the year when both the sun and moon are visible during the day. But during a lunar eclipse the chance to see both the sun and moon simultaneously is extremely rare. This is because, geometrically speaking, this kind of phenomenon should not be possible.
A sunrise. Now imagine turning 180 and seeing a moon-set. That's "selenelion."
A lunar eclipse is one of the only times that the moon and sun are exactly 180 degrees apart on Earth's sky, which means that right after the moon sets, the sun should rise, making it technically impossible to see both at once.
But a simple trick of the light changes everything, and as a result, crafty observers can see this wild, and otherwise impossible, event.
Observers in Australia, western Asia, islands in the Pacific Ocean, and much of North America will get the chance to observe the lunar eclipse. However, only a few regions on Earth will have the chance to see the selenelion, so check to see if your sunrise and moonset times overlap tomorrow morning. Rats - Denver's do not overlap by much. 7:03 sunrise and 7:14 moonset. Baz has a viewing chance with a three minute differential between moonset and sunrise (although I do get confused about what day is what across that dateline, and whether the lunar eclipse is on the 8th or 9th there....).
Because Earth's atmosphere refracts, or bends, light at a certain angle near the horizon, it creates an optical illusion that makes both the sun and moon appear slightly higher in the sky and therefore less than 180 degrees apart. As a result, we get a tiny window where we can see both celestial orbs simultaneously.
Unless you are atop a mountain or sailing in the middle of the ocean, however, you might be hard pressed to catch this trick of the light. You need to be in a spot where you can clearly see both the east and west horizons. But if you are in such a spot, you'll catch an especially rare sight of a setting eclipsed moon with a rising sun.
Keep going, keep going!

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Darn, if only I'd known ... I'd've headed for Alaska or Hawaii, tonight. The total eclipse begins at 3:25 am and ends at 4:25 am, PDT. ADT and HAST times are more within my 2:30 am bedtime window; though, that's not to say I can't stay up that late. It would be memorable to see both the sun and moon, simultaneously. Where's a boat, in the middle of the ocean, when you need one.Kona2 wrote:Another total lunar eclipse is happening tonight - and certainly some of our night owl teammates will get the opportunity to see this, Minnie.

Selenelion. Well, that's a mouthful, and surprisingly it seems to be less of a word than 'whovian'. So glad we have an astrogator who is not so easily fooled by such simple tricks of the light. Which is why I will have no problem sleeping like aKona2 wrote: But a simple trick of the light changes everything, and as a result, crafty observers can see this wild, and otherwise impossible, event.
during this selenelion.
Congrats Danno. And continued best wishes to you, Ron. And also to you, Kristine.
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
So glad I give you material to work with in Whoville! Hahaha! There I was, out on the deck (and not of a ship), watching the lunar eclipse with one trusty dog by my side. The other trusty dog was busy in dog dreamland, feet moving to some unseen rabbit she was chasing. Definitely an orange-red blood moon as the Earth's shadow came into play. No chance of seeing the selenelion from this location - even if there weren't trees and buildings in the way. Still, the lunar eclipse was worthy of setting the alarm to get out there and see it in progress. It was a balmy 46 degrees F and much easier to be outside watching lunar events at that temperature than some of our April and October brrrrriskness. Next lunar eclipse: 4 April ! Stay tuned.danwho wrote:Selenelion. Well, that's a mouthful, and surprisingly it seems to be less of a word than 'whovian'.
