There I was, getting ready to chip up to the green...and crawling about in the grass was a very fuzzy caterpillar. I hadn't seen a caterpillar in ages. So, naturalist like, I ran for the phone camera and took a picture of this little dude. Or dudette. One member of the golfing foursome then said that the sighting of this Tiger Moth larva was a predictor of an early winter. Say what?! Caterpillars predict winter's arrival or harshness? Was this a research topic for Wiki or the Farmer's Almanac? Most of the myths around the sightings of what is called the Woolly Bear caterpillar have to do with the size and placement of its color bands. Some say that if the middle band (or the rust colored one) is the largest, then winter will be mild. Some say that the wider the width of any of the three segments, the more intense that part of winter will be. Must admit that it took me a minute to tell which end of the caterpillar was which - and is the end that moves forward the start of winter or the end of winter?! But fear not. The National Weather Service says that these caterpillars go through several moultings on their way to mothness in the spring, and that the bands width and coloration is merely a reflection of what and how well fed these little beasts are. Woolly bully indeed. Onwards.
