Meter Combos

Post by Kona2 » July 13th, 2008, 9:55 pm

Mitch - I can't tell when the numbers get posted, so if I get a late start on writing them down, it's pretty easy to have happen. No worries - the important thing is to move the dial! Thanks!

Oops - Andrea's Birthday ...July 13th

Post by Kona2 » July 14th, 2008, 8:07 am

Happy Birthday Andrea (July 13th)! Now that I am working on the July 13th numbers, I realize there is a flaw in my birthday system as these should definitely be reported on the actual day!

ugh - 2 weeks off is killer

Post by acrewer » July 15th, 2008, 1:44 am

I'm back from the East Coast. I managed to flail through 30 minutes today, not a pretty sight  . But meters are meters right?

BG - My son found a Boston Red Socks cap in NY with 'Red Socks' written in Hebrew! He loves it.

Glad to be back in LA and leave the humidity behind.

For those who are interested, I've posted pictures of my recent canoe trip in the Quetico Provincial Park at:
http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2267 ... 8560wuKfVf

To see the comments on each photo, view in the manual mode and scroll downward on each photo to see them at the bottom of each photo. The automated slideshow is a nice feature, but will only show the title on each photo. Hope you enjoy! Darryl

Beautiful pictures Darryl. You truly were in God's country. Simply beautiful reminds me of the Adirondaks without the mountains.

Beautiful wilderness and great pictures ... I feel I've qualified for a Girl Scout Outdoorsman merit badge, just by watching the slide show! I was trying to figure out which one was you, Darryl, but intuited correctly before going back to the manual/comments mode. (Rethinking whether to take the digital camera on my rafting trip, instead of the disposable, waterproof camera they recommend. Although, I'm sure there's a reason for that!) Dinner looks great - was that the trout in the skillet?

Happy belated birthday, Andrea!

Chris

Thanks Chris (and Dan). No problem picking me out in the Quetico. I'm usually the oldest geezer in the crowd and I tend to wear bright colored T's so my crew doesn't lose me. Sometimes they get way ahead of me - the lead from behind thing you know. My paddling partner is my wife Ginny. My right hand man is a younger brother, Dave; who is a Forester by profession and worked in the BWCA on portage crew for 4 years. His paddling partner, Brian (the young one), is a fisheries biologist colleague of mine with more than 50 trips of experience into the Quetico. Linda (the redhead) and Haynes are long time paddling friends of ours from Seattle and Atlanta areas respectively.

I have taken a digital camera on these trips for about 10 years now; and before that a cheap SLR. I would take a digital on your Grand Canyon trip, but get a waterproof, lexan carrying case for it at your local outdoors store first. My point and shoot Olympus fits snuggly in a GSI case along with a spare set of batteries duct taped to the inside, and a spare memory card. Pelican is another case to look at and widely available. My camera was completely submerged this spring in Missouri for at least 5 minutes when my canoe got pinned. The lexan box did not leak a drop, but you have to be careful that the rubber gasket is clean (no dirt or carrying straps on it) before latching the box before it will be watertight. If you take a digital, be sure to case it before entering rapids as there is bound to be significant splashing and risk of getting the camera wet. And that would be a no-no. And you would want to mount the case securely on something, but still be very accessible when you want the camera.

Dinner was lake trout in that photo. And we were fortunate enough to have 2 other lake trout dinners, and 2 dinners with a mix of walleye and northern pike. First night is stewed steak over mashed potatoes so no need for fish. Dinners 2 thru 6 we had fish with supper. Dinner seven we were campbound because of a thunderstorm and couldn't go fishing and had to chew on jerky for that dinner. The last dinner we couldn't catch the right kind of fish and I wasn't going to eat small mouth bass no matter what! Darryl
