Some say that the number 8 is a lucky number - and here's wishing our eighth canoe onto the virtual waters much good luck!

Woohoo and hooyah !! Not too long ago, Minnie put in half marathons just about every single day -- ending the year with over 200 of them. For this reason, she soon earned the nickname of Minnie the Mooner since a moon is used as an icon for these distances. Yesterday, the lure of the canoe must have been particularly strong. Minnie completed a half marathon - and found that she was REALLY close to getting her new caricature into the canoe. She'd asked her resident artist for a new hairdo and earrings on her "native." And so it was that a few hours after finishing the first half marathon, Minnie was back on the erg, throwing a SECOND half marathon into the logbook. Probably helped that she was watching a couple of "Die Hard" movies while rowing! Well done, Minnie!

A Distance Award Like No Other

Post by Kona2 » January 6th, 2013, 12:25 pm

Challenges are supposed to be just that....a goal that is not easy to reach, yet with a disciplined approach (and a few hooyah! moments) - the goal can be met. Was thinking about this as I recorded some of the teammate total meters today. We have several teammates (Nataliya, Robert H, Ron J, Roger and Sarah A) who are rapidly approaching the fireworks milestone of ONE million meters on the rowing season. Whether you are new to rowing or have many millions in your personal meter bank, this is a significant milestone representing a big time commitment to exercise (and to yourself!). With that in mind, I looked at my current meter total for the year and wondered just what it would take to double that amount...sort of a meter double down (although I am not quite sure that the use of double down is quite right, it sounds good). And then the opportunity to REALLY think about that presented itself...

AJ turns out some very impressive special artwork for this team....and all I can say after having seen the 500K awards (the bathtubs), is that if there is ANY way that YOU can go for this distance, it will be SO worth it. I'm sitting here with calculator and calendar right now trying to figure out if I can get to 500K by the end of this Challenge. I've never rowed 500K in a month in my life (so why not NOW?! says my evil twin). Will this be a rue the day or a praise the day?! Decisions...decisions...

Holy Moley Batman! Look at the meters those at the top have logged :!:
Sheesh, I feel like such a slacker!
I love challenges. I WILL get a seat in a canoe before this challenge is over.

By the way, I really like the ErgData program for my iPod Touch. It works great with the new Connector Kit that I got for Christmas. No more lugging my PM3 into the house to upload my meters to my online logbook. :D

Canoe Number Nine !

Another half marathon...and Rosi captures her canoe! Love the green headband and ponytail band - just like Rosi's team colors for her Green Bees soccer football team...might get this wrong, but I think that's Abejas Verdes?

Hooboy! We are in a rowing dogfight...and it's still the FIRST week of the Challenge !

Here's the current list of participants signed on for the Luna-Tics Challenge Team. There are many familiar names (and thank you for rowing with us again!), and a few that seem quite new. Welcome to Kathryn A - and thanks, Jane, for recruiting her from the Southbridge Y. Indeed, a special team welcome to all who are new to rowing with us (you have truly joined in with a bunch of moon-bound pirates - but we have good hearts). Names that seem new to me are Fred Church (brother of Ed maybe?), Andrei R, Lachezar M, and Melissa H. Glad to have everyone aboard, and do feel free to join in the team forum discussions...it's how we get to know who you are! Lurking is okay, too. :D

I've got to admit, being part of a team has made a big difference. I had a couple of days off for my birthday, but woke up this morning thinking about two things.

1. The NHL is done their lockout and my leafs will be back on soon...(hockey for those of you who have no idea what I am talking about)
2. Gotta get some meters rowed to do my small part for the team!

I feel great, and I keep lurking this discussion inspired by the stories and great numbers people are putting up!

Post by Kona2 » January 7th, 2013, 1:52 am

Hooboy! We better get some oars soon - all these canoes could cause a canoe jam on Moon River! Congratulations, Tim G, on getting through the 100K milestone....and snagging your canoe! Tim is canoe # 10, with a generic native caricature!

The difference is in the details (for so many things! :D ), and AJ is paying close attention to make some subtle changes here and there - in this instance, when two teammates each have long, light colored hair! Cool !

Can we get a message to Michelle Donavon?!

Post by Kona2 » January 7th, 2013, 11:59 am

What a great start to the week! And the PM I received about one of our teammates just made it even better! I am hoping that Michelle will see the note below or that one of her other teammates knows how best to contact her to see if she is interested in pursuing the opportunity described. Dorian says that it is difficult to find LTA rowers who fit the age and citizenship parameters - and who are actually rowers! Well, this team has some fine adaptive rowers and these rowers are getting noticed! I know that Ronnie and Zander have participated in Paralympic games for Jamaica and have great things to say about the experience. I told Dorian that I would post this message here on our forum in the hopes that what looks like a good fit for US Rowing might be a good fit for Michelle, too.

Michelle, if you wish to contact Dorian, I think you can send her a PM...or send me one and I will give you the email address she provided for the contact purposes. And, if anyone knows other rowers who might meet the criteria that Dorian describes, perhaps you can let her know about them as well. Good opportunity for smiles all around.
Pararowing wrote:Hi

I am wondering if you might be able to help me. My name is Dorian Weber and the reason i contact you is that USRowing (the national governing body for the sport of Rowing) is looking to find athletes / very active people who would be interested in trying out to hopefully represent the USA at world rowing championships and eventually the Paralympic games in 2016 in RIo in the sport of Para rowing.

I noticed a member of your Luna-Tic team, Michelle Donavon, was classified as LTA on the Jan concept 2 challenge and logging lots of miles. I tried to email her on here however it seems the last time she logged on was back in 2011.

Anyway USrowing are currently looking for athletes aged between 18 - 30 who are physically fit (if you have rowed on the water that would be amazing) and looking for a great challenge

I myself recently represented the USA at the Paralympic games in London, which was an amazing experience.. Met loads of awesome people and even got to go to the White house and shake the presidents hand. First one in my family to do that

Each year there is a world championships which presently is fully funded by USrowing and this year it is in Korea and then ever 4 years
there is the paralympic / olympic games.

I am wondering as one of the most frequent posters in the LUNA-TICS group you might have a contact number / email address for her so i can at the very least inform her of this potential opportunity and see if it is something she would like to do.

Fabio and his Canoe

Post by Kona2 » January 7th, 2013, 2:17 pm

The moon gets blamed for a lot of things, including werewolves in the light of the Full Moon...guess it's a good thing it wasn't a full moon yesterday or the transformation of Richard T into Fabio might have been permanent or something. This, my teammates, is exactly how nicknames happen here! Btw, Full Moon Fever was the first solo album of Tom Petty. Trivia to know.
