All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 12.27.12

Post by Kona2 » December 28th, 2012, 11:55 am

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its ongoing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before....it was a Star Trek, Next Generation marathon here in the mountains yesterday evening...and who should happen to be in the episode first showing but Guinan, the galactic bartender played by Whoopi Goldberg.

We've used up about two-thirds of the 2013 rowing season...still PLENTY of time and many challenges left. The January Virtual Team Challenge starts January 1st - please go to your logbooks, scroll across the top to the section that is labeled Teams, click on that and scroll down to elect to participate in the JVTC with us. January 1st might just be a "turn the page" time for many rowers, and we are here to help everyone get those goals accomplished!

One of the goals that a lot of rowers have is to participate in the Global Marathon Challenge, now held at the very first of the rowing season between May 1- May 15. Can unequivocally state that if you have designs on getting that particular challenge done, that it would be good to take a look at some of the training plans that Concept2 has online. Even when you're used to throwing out a half marathon pretty regularly, there's something about that full marathon distance that messes with your mind (and other bits of the body like your backside). Just sayin....if you're thinking about some calendar New Year's goals, there are some great opportunities to bag those beastie goals...and participate in the Challenges...and feel really good about all the exercise you're getting!

Meanwhile, teammates are checking in (always a good thing to hear about what everyone's been up to), and milestones continue to click away!

Season meters as of 240/365 = 107,900,738 m

Congrats on the baby! (I have a brother who lives in Durham, I went with him when he ran the OBX marathon in November.)

I have been out of action for a couple of weeks when by rower broke. I have been working with Concept2 to get the parts replaced. They were GREAT, went beyond the warranty to get my back to working. So I am looking forward to getting back to rowing!!!! I cannot say enough about what a good company is Concept2.

Hooboy! Still waiting for the thermometer to climb UP to zero....it's - 20.5 C, and - 5 F. Blue sky day, though!

Thanks for checking in, Jim - Arkansas was hit much harder with recent snowfall. Two weeks is a long time for people to be without power - especially when it's this kind of cold...and when kids are out of school. And quick healing hoped for Bobbie's dad.

Also, thanks to Mike G - always wonder what happens when a teammate stops rowing - here's hoping for speedy Concept2 replacement part arrival !

Back home after two weeks of multi-state Christmas visiting. Unfortunately, took a cold back from Boston with me. Might try a row later today - trying to affix the sail to the erg now to see if I can take advantage of sneeze power.
I see lots of action has been going on in the team. Welcome to the world, little Henry James. And I hope all turns out well for you soon, Jim. And Calamity / Guinan, I bet you have a special hot toddy cocktail recipe...

Image Sign on .... sign on.....sign on....

The January Virtual Team Challenge starts in 1 or 2 days, depending upon which hemisphere you're rowing in! To sign on to the JVTC team, go to your logbooks, scroll across to teams, and scroll down to the link you can select to participate. Hope to see you on the roster ! All are welcome to row with us, and surely EVERY meter counts. My perspective on the JVTC is that it's really a two-part challenge. During the first two weeks, we're setting up the team - recruiting team members, hopefully getting some good meters in the team meter piggy bank. The competitive spirit is there, but is a little more in the background. During the final two weeks, hooboy - hang on to those ergs, because it will be fierce competition as teams row for roster position. Great opportunity to be part of a team event!

Season meters as of 242/365 = 108,462,257 m

Total meters on the day = 327,466 m

I'm excited for the virtual team challange :D

My goal is to consistently put in 30 minute rows, which is a good work out for me. I rowed 30 minutes on Saturday and Sunday, but my left leg is really sore today. Kinda weird it's just my left leg, but it should go away by the time the challange starts.

Happy New Year everyone! I had a few drink orders in from the team to share with you. Cheers! Much health and happiness in the New Year to all!

Jan has requested a glow in the dark drink - so an Aurora Borialis it is. Since the following recipe is for a very large serving, I think she might share.

2 liters Gin or Vodka

9 Liters Tonic Water

3-4 Bottles Roses Mojito Passion,
add ice and a black light

Incidentally - it is tonic and energy drinks that do the glowing. It reminds me of a dance club I use to go to long ago and far away called the Moon with many black lights.

Image

Danwho has requested a Hot Toddy. This has a variety of recipes - some with whiskey and some with brandy. It also comes with claims to ease the common cold.

In honor of Jean Luc, Here is a version with tea:
1 tbsp honey
3/4 glass tea
2 shots brandy
1 slice lemon

Peter and Lilia habe fond memories of a Horny Margarita. THe Horny part come from Hornitos Reposado Tequila - which is "rested" in wood barrels fro at least two months.

• 1 ounce Cointreau
• Juice from half a lime
• 3 ounces sweet-n-sour mix
• Lime wheel and kosher salt
1½ ounces Sauza Hornitos 100% agave reposado tequila

And now for some multinational relationship building drinks.

Barbara has requested a Blank and Tan - traditionally made from Guinness and Bass pale ale (English/Irish)

Chris has requested a chunnel - a drink made with English/French ingredients.
1 oz Germain elderflower liqueur or 1 1/2 oz Grand Marnier® orange liqueur
1 oz gin
1/2 oz sweet vermouth
1 dash bitters

I think it is the milk bar for Mary and Henry. The Clockwork Orange picture I found was a little too revealing for this site.

In the Newall Vuillmot household - the kids have already had hot chocolate after an afternoon of sledding and ice skating. Debbie is thinking about Hot Sake and Jane wants Amaretto and Baileys.

The Astrogator gets 3 gallons of New Year's cheer!?! Too right (terminology courtesy of Baz), she'll share! ... although my recollections of dance clubs with black lights conjure up images of obsessively noting everyone who has dandruff.

NYE is still young, on the West Coast, but I have king crab legs thawing on the *** DELETE - SPAM *** counter, and am still undecided whether to use the rest of the seafood to make cioppino or paella.

Happy-Happy, you Lunatics. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to my Chunnel. See you all on the other side, for the JVC!
