I had 2 30 min competitions since last Friday. The first I came in 2nd in my age group and yesterday I came in 2nd overall. I can only say what a difference it makes when you have another racer on your heels for the last 15 minutes, I rowed at a 2-3 sec faster pace than I normally do when I'm not in a race. It really forces you to dig deep. I had a 50 meter lead from 3rd place rower with 15 min left and new 1st was too far ahead for me to catch. I figured I had 2nd and started to let up and save my energy for the finish, and 3rd started his move and within 5 min he was only 15 meters behind. It's funny how the mind starts messing with you, a big part of me said let him get ahead you I don't have the energy to fight this guy for 10 more minutes, but My pace was getting faster, which I can never do on the 2nd half of a 30 min piece. I finished with a 10 meter lead and was really happy I held him off at the finish, and didn't let the give up attitude win.
Wow, Doug, that's fantastic! What an accomplishment. Congratulations!!! B) B) B) Looks like your hard work has been paying off.

My computer is acting up, so I am posting from my Kindle... I had hoped for a 6:52 going into today's race, and I'd hoped Eric Wuerfel wouldn't show up... He didn't, but the fellow who came in 2nd in Boston last year in the 60-64 HW division, Michael Robinson, did!
I actually ended up breaking 6:50 for the first time in about 2 years, coming in 2nd by 2 seconds with a 6:49.4. With so limited speed work, I'm more than happy with that!

Awesome job Izzz, it's a great feeling when you beat the time that you have in your head. Competition really helps you push your limits.

Izzie,
That is still a world class time for a guy your age- and with tendonitis no less.
Congrats!

Congrats!
I just checked, & that time (6:49.4) would've been 8th (of 41), 5th (of 22) & 6th (of 34) Place at the last 3 CRASH-B's, the "Worlds" of Indoor Rowing.

Also, I went through my history on the C2 website, and the last time I broke 6:50 was 3 years ago at the same race (Cincinnati Indoor Rowing Championships) when I did a 6:46 for 2nd Place to Eric Wuerfel.

I broke 6;50 only 5 time that season (2012), and 5 times the previous season (2011). Of the five sub-6:50's in 2011, four were also sub-6:45's, including my PB of 6:42.3, and my CRASH-B time of 6:42.5.
So, this is only my 11th sub-6:50 row lifetime.

(Yeah, I know 5 seconds doesn't sound like much. 5 seconds of a 420-second race is only a little over 1% faster. But, it's one of the wonderful peculiarities of rowing that that 1.2% increase in speed actually requires 4% more energy per minute! A 7:00 2K requires 302 watts of power per minute, a 6:55 requires 314W, a 6:50 requires 325W & a 6:45 needs 338W. So, the 3.6% speed increase of those 15 seconds requires 11.9% more watts of energy! That's a much greater capacity to use oxygen, to produce muscular contractions, etc.)

Boston's registration is closed, so I guess I'll need to wait 'til next year...

Thanks, Doug!

I usually play it a little safe in race situations. The adrenaline rush makes me feel nauseous, I always go out a little too hard, so I'm afraid of becoming a DNF or a "fly & die" victim due to cramps or poor planning.
Yesterday, I kept having to slow myself down a bit from about 200 meters in until about 1,400 meters. The last 250 I went close to all out, and caught up from about 18 meters behind to about 9. The other concern I had is that 7 on their damper setting was noticeably harder than 7 on mine (NOTE TO SELF: Clean dust out of flywheel casing!), so I was more concerned about running out of energy towards the end. That's why I didn't make my "move" with 400m left, but waited until 250m, which is under a minute's time. I can virtually always hold on for another minute...
