Not sure if I can scrap together the 21km tomorrow (I can only hope for a lot of short sessions), especially with a lot of other weekend-specific duties... :(

Good luck to all who can do the Summer Solstice Row!

I was down in the Grandma's Marathon finish line area of town tonight to meet a relative and her friends from Chicago that came up to run tomorrow. Anyway since this marathon happens tomorrow morning: 6:30 AM start for the half and 7:30 start for the full (Central Time); and it is also C2 summer solstice half marathon row, I thought it might be cool to post the radio broadcast link for the solstice rowers who might want to row early in the morning and maybe listen in (through a computer) to live coverage of the elite runner's race from start to finish plus winner's interviews
http://www.fan560.com/main.php
The listen live button at the top should feed the broadcast to you, however, I make no guarantees on this.

Darryl - starboard is usually for righties and port for lefties as your outside arm is usually stronger. But it is good to learn both sides. Most college kids want to row port because they want to earn the stroke seat.
I rowed 3 years on starboard and 1 year on port. As a consequence my right arm is about 1" longer than my left. All that stretching at the catch! So put both arms straight out in front of you and pick the longer arm. Right for Starboard, left for Port.

Day 6 of RTR

Post by Kona2 » June 22nd, 2008, 11:37 am

Woohoo! Summer is officially here!! You guys and gals have been busy rowing and posting! Great work on the stats posts, Darryl and Chris!

I am definitely still processing the great bike ride, yet know that I will have some stories and photos to share soon. And yes, Darryl, it was appropriately categorized under "extreme"! I am less of a Ride the Rockies purist, though, and if I thought a segment of the ride was too extreme, I took the sag wagon! No medics needed for me, although others were less fortunate.

Photo below shows a grimy Kona2 four hours into a much longer ride (77 mi) that was absolutely one of the most scenic rides I have ever taken. There were definitely moments to savor! This is Taylor Reservoir and Dam, built specifically to capture the runoff from snow melt and use same for irrigation. The "hill" up to this area was quite steep, but so worth the effort!

The peaks behind me included the Three Apostles and Ice Mountain. I am sure there are stories behind their names!

Ready to return to rowing and stats!

Yay ... Jan's back! I, for one, have lived vicariously through your bike ride! (Even put extra padding on the erg seat ... )

Jan - Welcome back! I expect you're going to find rowing a little easier after peddaling up mountains for hours and hours! Incredible!

Gina - Thanks for the coaching on right hand / left hand rowing. I suspected that was the case. Over the weekend I discovered considerable chafing on the outside of both my calves from abrasion while rowing in that narrow chamber my feet and lower legs are in. So I'm having my bride sew up some spandex sleeves to wear on my calves when lessons continue tomorrow. I hope that does the trick, otherwise it may be duct tape to the rescue.

Darryl - yes the old spruce shells can have odd parts that chafe. Ladies hips do not always fit gracefully in the narrow bow seats! Compression bike shorts to the rescue. Just don't never let no cox or coach catch you lookin' at your oar!

Say, it looks like there's an updated team logo! I like it! Can't figure out how to copy it in here, but I like it! Spreadsheet has some enhancements also! Very cool!

Season meters as of 52/365 = 7,335,297 m

Total meters on the day = 119,504 m

24 percent of our oars are in the water!

Milestones!

Gina,
Since I couldn't do the Solstice Row on the 21st because of Shabbos I did 22000 m on the 22nd. It may not officially count, but I figure it's as close as I could this year. I hope you had a good Shabbos.

Made it back from the BWCA. What a trip, caught some bass no walleyes or northerns. Been a long time since I was up there. Stopped for lunch Friday noon at grandmas not realizing the marathon was that weekend, its kinda tough parking a truck with a canoe trailer down on canal with all those people and traffic. Tried to get the 1/2 marathon in on the soltice but just couldn't get to a machine till today. It was fun but glad to sleep in a bed again.

There's an image ... a moose with spandex calf-chaps. One can only look forward to the possible duct tape chapter ...
