Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Oops - dropped off the radar again.
14 Nov – 1k in 4:08.6 which is a SB by 0.9 secs. A great improvement and useful for Fitness Matters challenge.
16 Nov – half marathon in 1:39:31.7. A test run for a potential marathon in Hamburg next February to see if I can stick the pace. First hour went by at around 2:20.5 pace but lost a lot of ground after and finished with average of 2:21.5. Only a 10 sec improvement to SB but hoping to have another go soon.
20 Nov – first sub 2:00 500m post hip-op. Really pleased with that and got through some of it at 1:55 pace. 1.1 secs improved SB. 255m for manic minute was done about 10 minutes later for a fantastic 10 year best, (because 254m is so bad I managed just to hang on and surpass it). Finally tried 100m for which 24.4 secs reflects tiredness
23 Nov – Cardiff IRC. Had to leave home at 6:20 in pouring rain to get there on the day. Train was very quiet with no rugby or football around and few shoppers braved it. A 40 minute walk to the venue from the station meant soggy trainers, (even the swans weren’t happy and were on the banks of the Taff. Luckily I made weight first time by 800 grams, and got stuck into the warm up quickly. The race itself was a procession - Justine Reston set a new world record of 7:19.9 and I was second in 8:25.8. As I was rather stiff I started a little slowly, otherwise a great performance. Due to sitting next to Justine I do feature on the videos of race 13.
25 Nov – redone November CTC in 10:26.2 which is 9 seconds better than before and is 2k-1 pace.
Apart from indoor rowing the other thing I have done well on is the stairclimber on which I have finally managed level 17 (100 steps a minute) for 90 secs.
Thinking I might redo the half-marathon later today.
The BRIC is next weekend and luckily for me the race for the 50-54 lady LWTs is not until 12:35. Thinking I wont have to get up early and can therefore fit in a trip to central London and theatreland

Lindsay - great stuff on the bikeerg. I hvent tried this machine - is it much different from a Wattabike? Great work on the 3:24.5 for 1k challenge. I see you sneaked in at under 3 minutes on adjusted time, (right behind Mike and way ahead of my effort).
Mike – I admire your persistence with the blood donation. Things must have changed since I used to go, as once I was booked in I don’t remember ever being turned away, (although as I was near the end of the session it was sometines rather late). Well done on your 7:07.3 2k – still a good result and a tough session. Like the way you want to be spot on to the tenth of a second. Looking strong on your 8k rows. Maybe not the 1k time you wanted but you brought it down over the month.

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Half Marathon - done it for the 4th time this season. Started December with a 1:39.06 which is 25 secs off 2 weeks back and 2:20.9 pace. Never dropped below 2:24 pace so controlled it better this time. Really wanted to to sub 1:39 but couldnt find the finish,
Tonight - 3 days on I should be doing a 20 mins non stop at 2:10 pace. Here goes.
Entered the Hamburg Ergomaration in 12 weeks time so got to step up over Christmas and stay LWT

Me - 20 mins did happen (just) - nearly got ruined by cheesecake, (shouldnt go hoovering up second helping of cake at work at 4pm). Had to postpone this until 8:30pm but got it done nicely - 4616m and 2:09.9 average. Hopefully on the day (14 Dec) I can find a bit more at the finish.
Mike, Lindsay - Best wishes if you are coming to BRIC

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
I don't know, you wait ages for a post and then four come along all at once.....
Looks like a very positive period of training Susan which bodes well for Saturday, especially with the later start, although it does get a bit busy around lunch time! I'll be there cheering you on. I see Richard is also on the start sheet, as is Marjorie so lots to keep me interested. But no Rod or Carol this time...and indeed a noticeable absence of many/most from TeamGB. Also looking forward to watching Stu Wenman who's very active on the training thread. Anyway, very best of luck to you all.
My latest is the usual mix of nonsense with a couple of bits of rubbish and highlights that largely balance out:
23/11 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 32:52.1 (should have been .3)
24/11 5x2k 2r. Target rate was 20/22/24/22/20 with commensurate pace differences to total 40mins. I mucked up the 3rd and 4th pace targets a bit, but managed to hit 40:00.0 spot on overall so was well chuffed.
26/11 10x1min 1r. Target was 304m each one. Managed only 6 then lost it a bit, but struggled to a total 3006 overall so not as bad as it looked after 9!
27/11 8k free rate and vari pace (1:53-2:04) target 32 mins but missed with 32:00.2
28/11 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 32:41.9 (should have been 42.3)
29/11 5x2k 2r. Same as the 24th and got all of the reps very close to target but just missed the money shot with a 39:59.9 overall.
30/11 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 32:41.9 (as 28th .4 too fast!!)
1/12 7x1min 70"r for the CTC. A great session for me as I know it well enough to push a hard target and have the mental strength to stay with it. Was going to do 305m reps but managed the first few at 306 then 307/308 and 321 to finish for a 2160 total which was far above target. Yippeee!
2/12 8k free rate and vari pace (1:53-2:04) in 31:31.3 Spot on!!!!
3/12 Was going to do a 2kTT for the Sub7 ITC and as a test for what might have been on Sat (I know its completely different in public/race which is why I'd never do it!!). Actually only managed the first 500 or so on target and just sort of gave up and stroked in the grey zone to a thoroughly disappointing 7:22.9 (target .7). Wont be posting that for the ITC. Followed it with a free rate 5k at 2:00 pace and hit 20:00.0 spot on.
4/12 5x2k 2r @ 20 spm and a 2:00 pace target. Hit 3 spot on, 2 a smidge under but given 39:59.9 overall so very close.
5/12 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 32:31.9 (should have been 32.3)

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Hi guy's n gals thought I'd pop in to say best of luck to all at BRIC tomorrow. I'm meant to be starting but have been fighting a cold all week and sitting here tonight I seem to be going downhill fast so if I'm not there tomorrow at least you'll know why. I'm all packed and ready to go and will make the final call tomorrow morning when I wake. Ciao

I was 50/50 this morning too as I was starting to feel like a cold was coming on, and I'm a pathetic human when I get a cold, but I quite quickly decided that I'd be fine and adrenaline will rule the day tomorrow. Training hasn't gone to plan at all but that almost makes me feel like the pressure is off to some extent.
I'm currently sat in a hotel room near Luton, to help break up the journey down, and I'm starting to get a bit nervous.
Thanks very much Mike, very flattered that your looking forward to seeing me, BUT don't expect too much from me. I'm more suited to longer distances and I'm far from battle hardened enough at the moment to really produce a decent effort. Hopefully adrenaline will work with me this time rather than against me as it did at EIRC in February!

BRIC report
Very well done to all those who took part in BRIC. Great fun from this spectators perspective. Looks like you should/will be pleased with your results. The hosts were making much of the increased attendance (they claimed) up from last year, but to me it felt much quieter and there were many more empty ergs through the various rounds. Eg Although I saw Mike Forder at the venue he missed both his 2k and 500 slots so presumably not up for it on the day - shame for him. His wife Gel did well though!
None of the GB squad were there which was most noticeable in the open with just one sub 6 (5:59.8) - as opposed to the entire front row last year - but that didn't detract from the racing which was very exciting and close in several of the categories with tiny sub second separations.
Of those I knew to follow:
Marjorie was unopposed for a gong but still kept a good steady pace albeit a long way outside her own British record from 2017. But what was the problem before the start of the 500??
I was very pleased to see that Richard (LGF) did manage to race despite not feeling at his best and comfortably took "my" category with a 6:37. On a very good day I'd have finished between a potential 5th and more likely 8th of those present, so still not tempted!
Stu's race was the most impressive with Graham Benton once again setting the time of the day with a 5:57 and Stu himself hitting an endless seam of 1:40 strokes to a 6:41 finish - better than forecast which must bode well for the EIRC when full fitness returns.
The best ladies race covered many categories but included Justine Reston who knocked another second - or an incredible 4 seconds in the last fortnight - off the 50-54 LWT world record (and consequently a shame for Carol W loosing her British record from 2011). The race also included Susan (TPK) pulling steady 2:06s pretty much throughout to finish 3rd in the group - and I suspect with a post op best 2k time for her??
Exciting racing by the 6th form boys over 3 heats. One lad in the first set a very impressive 6:12 target way out in front on his own until the third heat when a pair posted 6:09 and 6:10 no doubt helped by them siting next to each other while slugging it out. 4th was +10s or so.
Under 23 men also raised a shout, won in 6:00 dead over a 6:00.3. Exciting stuff.
I'd left by 3:00 so missed the relays which I'm sure were also fun.
Good to see Eric Murray on the Asensei stand - this year's famous face!
Many thanks to all for the entertainment.

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Me - yes it was indeed a post-op PB and smack on the promised sub 8:25 target. Bronze medal was an unexpected bonus - just depends on who turns up as we were missing 2 out of 6. I liked the 12:35 start as it meant I could get up late, aka 8am, and not rush, (and go out to see "Only Fools and Horses" at the theatre on Friday.) Made LWT by 800gms and plenty of time to see some racing. Race start was much more positive this time, (having fluffed it up at Cardiff), and into my stride at 29spm and 2:06s. Started in 4th but soon became obvious that I was closing in and getting into 3rd just after halfway. Speeded up on last 500m to 2:04 pace and 33spm, and thumped the air when I knew I had got that target. Hats off to Justine for another World Record but as she wasnt sitting next to me this time it was less distracting. Celebrated the way LWTs know how - plenty of scoffing to do over the rest of the weekend.
PS No weigh in Cologne this Saturday. Just 20 mins of ergo fun and 3 in the category. Rock on

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Cheers Mike for watching. I only made the decision to compete around 3oc Saturday morning! Woke up around then and felt not too bad so dragged my body up to the velodrome. Glad I did Although Nigel Glover gave me a harder race than I really wanted. Not to fussed with the time as I know I'm in better shape than that, it was all about defending the title.
Afterwards I had a good chat with Eric Murray, nice guy.
Thinking about Paris now although I'm not sure how to go about getting a letter from my Doctor that I'm fit enough to compete

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Mike – Lots of rowing there, and a session nearly every day. Very well done when you have hit your target exactly and a brilliant CTC result, (my go at this madness tonight).
Stu – thanks for dropping in. Guests always welcome here. Great work for a well earnt 6:41 at BRIC. PS Don’t think I have done 2k training specifically either, (3rd one of the season so I know what to expect). I prefer longer distance too, and with several such races in the offing I just roll up to 2k!
Richard – glad you were well enough to get your race, and even more impressively landed a gold in such a situation. Congratulations on your defence of your 2018 win. I wouldn’t imagine that you will have a problem with getting a letter to say you are fit enough to compete from your GP, (although getting it done sooner rather than later with the long wait for appointments would be prudent). Actually this is the main reason why I am racing in Germany the week before Manchester and saying “non” to Paris – I will have a lot of trouble getting onto the waiting list for a second hip replacement if the first was anything to go by, (don’t want it to look like I am having a ball, er cannot help I am only 54).
Me - I can confirm that I should celebrate my 55th birthday with a 30 minute ergo in Baden - Württemberg, (a new category, my favourite distance and hopefully a gold).

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
well done Susan, Richard, Stu and all the BRICsters. Thanks for the summary mike.
(Susan my next visit would probably now be after my next "landmark" birthday in 2021)
Some of the masters races did look a bit sparse Mike but I think that was similar last year in some groups too.
The guy that impresses me is Rod Stewart who won the 65+ lwt in a 7:02 - an expat Aussie who has lived in the UK 30 years and is a super OTW guy. He has hardly ever raced over the years but won last year and faster this year - 7:02 is new BR and AR as well... and he turns 70 next week and is well inside the WR for the 70+. He is intending I think to go to Irish and Paris to have a go at it - needless to say he is very focussed and fit too.

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Interesting background Lindsay - I had no idea. Obviously, given the name(!), I checked him out and he looked extremely fit and honed - as he'd need to be to be so good. But having said that he didn't pace it as I'd have expected for a pro...set off really hard - well under 1:40 - and then appeared to fade. He'd have probably gone sub 7 off a steady 1:44 and since he was unopposed he could have adopted whatever pace he fancied. Probably just one of those not so good days for him - I too have more of those than the good ones! If the sub 1:40 start was realistic then, on a good day, he must be expecting to be able to post a sub 6:50. Amazing!

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
From what I can understand he is right at the top of the tree at world/euros/head racing and the like.MPx wrote: ↑December 10th, 2019, 7:01 amInteresting background Lindsay - I had no idea. You wont believe it Mike but I literally just sent an email to Rod because he asked me about that very subject. He has raced so little that he just goes for it and no real strategy and is defo not a 6:50 guy. He has now looked at others and realises that maybe he is too fast out of the blocks but it makes him nervous. OTW is all 1k so easier to just go for it. His splits were 1:40/1:45/1:49/1:47 and I made the same point and gave some tips - he is going to be faster with a flatter pacing and sub7 is a good goal. (he is the one about to set a WR though!)

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Felt a cold coming on towards the end of last week but seemed normal enough until Sunday night when it really hit me...and I didn't surface again until this morning. Just normal cold symptoms really but somehow magnified into man-flu and days in bed. Bit of a b****r really during a challenge period - not that that matters in the scheme of things but I'm never good at having my plans forcibly changed! Anyway, a session failure last Saturday has now been explained. I decided to knock out a few slow meters today to see if my now feeling fine despite the symptoms was real or just illusory. Seems like I'm on the mend, though I have been back coughing a little more than before the session. I'll continue with the very slow stuff until the symptoms properly go away.
9/12 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 32:32.1
10/12 5kTT for the FMMC and IRL. Not done many of these this year and certainly not at pace so really in hope over pragmatism set off sub 1:52 to see how it would go. It went to half way! Then had to back off, but with a faster last 500 came in with 18:52.9 @ 1:53 .2 pace. Disappointing, but actually still a SB (just). For ref my mind still thinks I can do 5k in the (low) 18:40s - but have yet to prove that!
11/12 5x2k 2r @ 20 spm. Target 8:00 @ 2:00 pace for all. Only one spot on but very close on all for a 39:59.5 total.
12/12 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 32:32.0
14/12 2kTT for Sub7 ITC. Set off at 1:44 but struggled from the start and backed right off to target 7:22.7 which I missed by .3! Signs of the times!
15/12 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 32:32.2
19/12 4x2k 2r. Chose this session so that it would be easy to bail if I felt it was messing with my lungs. Thought I might manage 5x but had had enough after 4. Target was just 2:11.2 pace free rate for 8:44.8 reps - I never erg this slowly! Managed .9/.7/5.0/.9 so .4 too slow overall. Felt fine at the time but I've been coughing since so maybe not slow enough. HR stayed in the lower reaches of UT2 and I was breathing normally, not at all laboured. If the coughing eases off, I'll try this again tomorrow.
