I haven't been on the board in a while so congrats to all those who have made milestones and welcome all new members.

As Kona had mentioned I got out on the water this past Sunday. I had the opportunity to try out a rowing skiff. In some ways I wish I hadn't, because now not only do I want a skiff but a place on the water, so I can get out and row every morning without having to trailer or car top a water craft.

So far I've looked at the following boats that would not only fulfill my love of rowing but also general boating, picnicking, fishing, etc.

Little River Heritage 15 Classic
Alden Whitehall 16

Does anyone on the team have any experience with these boats or rowing skiffs in general?

Thanks,
Peter G

Thanks for the Birthday shout out, all. The HRYC (Halifax River Yacht Club) has a birthday and anniverary party every 2nd Wed. each month. I don't normally go but this year it fell exactly on my day so I figured I better go. And no I don't have a yahct or any boat for that matter, I'm one of the pretenders.

Thanks again

It's 108 degrees in Sacramento, and the A/C kicked on at 9 am. Oh, I am so not going to row today!

Phew...hot just thinking about it!

It is a bit cooler in this part of the universe and we're off to the Blue Mountains for some abseiling this weekend, if the wind holds-off (forecast to be windy!) and temperatures down around 0 to 5 degrees on the celsius scale...might be a bit cool on the cliff face!!

Looking forward to it though...TomO is threatening to join in as well.

Good weekend to all, and hope it cools down a bit for you!

Cheers, BBB

Maybe the humidity and the temperature will fall as the clock approaches that midnight hour....Minnie's Rowing Time... Still, all this thought of temperature and humidity sent me down the bunny trail of heat index...A measurement of the air temperature in relation to the relative humidity, used as an indicator of discomfort. The heat index is higher when high air temperatures occur with high humidity, and lower when they occur with low humidity. Kind of an important thing to keep an eye on with its caution zones, and extreme cautions. Even with the current 21 percent humidity of Sacramento, the perceived temperature is still 107...and that is a very toasty number. Sorry. Can't help it. Have to pacify the inner geek.

Lots of great milestones to celebrate today...including bg's chart topping 1.5 MM meters, and a row by our team princess Anais. Peter G - I don't have an answer for you on the rowing skiffs. Our late team member Daryl (aka DuluthMoose) would have been all over that answer. If memory serves me, I think Moose would have suggested that you get in touch with the Paddling Associations (http://www.paddling.net) - although these are more for canoe and kayakers, I think they would be able to direct you to some folks who are knowledgeable about rowing skiffs. Also, Karyn Gallagher is one of our on the water teammates, and you could send her a message.

Season meters as of 71/365 = 29,886,624 m

Total meters on the day = 789,288 m

Whoa...we've not had birthday triplets before...that's probably a new statistics record ....

Image

Today is Brett's birthday, Karyn G's birthday AND Andrea C's birthday ...that's amazing for one team! Happy birthday! We wish you many, MANY more !

The birthday stat gets explained whenever we have at least two people on the team who share the same birth date. It all started with the birthday stats problem in one of my classes. We had about 30 people in the class, and the prof walks in and says "I'll bet the odds of two people in this room sharing a birthday are 95 percent ." And sure enough, in that random group, we had a birthday match. Sometime in 2009, I asked teammates to share their birth dates so we could repeat the experiment. Most people replied and we found some interesting things. bg and Minnie, for example, had already decided to be training partners....and then learned they were birthday twins (Aug 6th). Kiba and AJ are also birthday twins, and up till now, I thought Karyn and Andrea were birthday twins...but now I see they are really triplets.

There are probably more birthday matchups ...it's a fun thing to do with a random group of people as long as you have at least 25 people as a group size. And, as always, we try to respect the wishes of those who wish to fly under the radar when it's their birthday...

I was playing golf today (which might be the 4 reference?), and one of the gals in the foursome said that her last name meant summer. She said it worked well because was born in summer, loved summer. I asked her when her birthday occurred, and surprise...she and I were birthday twins (and that's a 1 chance in 183 occurrence). No way! Very fun to do these things. I was not a good golfer, and I am not a good stats person today since I haven't posted them. Hahaha. Might not either.
