A member of an indoor rowing team or club? If so, this is the place for you.

Can this one team row to the moon and back?

Here are some photos from the weekend's Tough Bloke Challenge...TomO made me sprint between some of the obstacles (okay - I was trying to keep up with him! )

And I came across the following quote the other day, penned by the American author Helen Keller (quite a remarkable person!). It was written up in a climbing text I was reading, so I’m possibly talking my book here...

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all”.

Cheers, BBB B)
Those photos give a whole new meaning to the washing machine cycle that says presoak....and the photos of scaling the wall....it wasn't the going over the wall that seemed so scary, it was the getting back to the ground. Daring adventure indeed! I think Helen's right ...the only security we really have is what we carry inside us. :D

Today starts the SkErg Loppet challenge...and I am not sure what a loppet is, actually. We do have several teammates who indicate that they exercise with the SkiErg, so good luck on getting those 100K meters done in July. Ah. Apparently a loppet is an endurance race over varied terrain...usually about 35K or so.

SkiErg Loppet

The SkiErg Loppet runs from July 1–31.

The Details
■Using the Concept2 SkiErg, ski at least 100,000 meters during the month of July and enter your meters in your online logbook.
■This is an individual challenge. (You do not need to belong to a team to participate.)
■Meters must be entered online.
■SkiErg meters only (no on snow, indoor rower, or on water meters please).

Apologies for the late posting. Much difficulty in getting internet this weekend. Apparently the storms that hit the east coast, and the fires that we're having have impacted the cell phone towers that do the transmitting. I would be on internet, then kicked off in two or three minutes. Really frustrating, but got the stats numbers earlier in the day (just couldn't do anything with them for awhile!).

Welcome back, Sarah. Always good to see returning faces! Lots of good milestones being rung up with all the meters this weekend.

Season meters as of 61/365 = 26,074,327 m

Total meters on the day = 555,300 m

Huge congrats on your first half marathon! My first one ever was back in February of this year, and while my own times are never anything stellar it still offers a major sense of accomplishment. :D

Would also like to send out a congrats to Cathie for the 1 million!

Image You may recall that there is a small herd of the bovine variety pasturing in the as yet undeveloped space behind the eclectic residential neighborhood where I live. The cows aren't always there....they get mooooved around a bit, and do some wandering on their own. Received a call from a somewhat irate neighbor this morning ...it was oh dark thirty (although the sun was peeking above the horizon)...and all I heard was "there's a medium sized cow in my backyard and it's eating my flowers and trampling my grass." Now I wasn't sure what a medium sized cow meant, but a quick look out in the serengheti showed that a calf had indeed managed to escape the fenced in area....and had moooved on to another neighbor's yard. Not only that, but more calves were coming to join their buddy. Wasn't sure who owned the cattle, so I called the sheriff to report the escapees (didn't want them to wander out into the roadways). Dispatch didn't know what to do with the cavorting calves either, so they said call animal control. Animal control said "we don't do cows", call the brand inspector. Brand inspector?!! We just needed a herdsman with a bit of fence repair! But I called the brand inspector anyway. The brand inspector was out inspecting brands. She did call me later in the day to say she did not do roundup, but had I captured the cows? Meanwhile, the owner of the cattle showed up and took care of the issue. It was a fine start to the day, although some folks are going to be surprised when they do yard clean up. Who's on first, indeed.

Internet has been down so will try to get things posted here since it appears to be working again.

...it's been 5 months since my last confession... Wait a minute, I'm not Catholic, but it has been a long time since I checked in. My wife, Jill, gave birth to our second child, Kaitlyn, just over 4 months ago. Everyone is doing well and life seems to be settled into a routine with Jill having been back to work about 5 weeks now. I'm finding the second child (older sister Maddie is 4 and a half) is not as stressful as the first, but it does keep me much busier than with our first. While some couples may share the common chores, we've found success in splitting them up for the most part.

One big responsibility I've picked up is food. I do all the grocery shopping and food preparation. I sporadically cooked before, but I've taken it on as a full time job now. For those of you trying to lose weight, I recommend a book that I've read recently titled, "The Smarter Science of Slim". While I realize promoting diet advice is kin to recommending a preacher or politician, I believe the book can stand on its own merits. I've taken the practical advice I read in the book and applied it in the *** DELETE - SPAM ***. As they say, the proof is in the pudding. My wife now ways less than she did when she got pregnant, my older daughter Maddie has trimmed up noticeably, and I was able to push past my weight loss plateau I've been sitting on since last July/August. Just in case anyone needs another example of diet > exercise, I didn't lose any weight when I rowed around 1.35m meters in the Fall Challenge last September/October. I've lost about 25 pounds in the past 6 weeks (5 of which were gained since my low point last year). I'm now down 83.6 pounds and only 16.4 away from my 100 pounds goal. I started my weight loss when my Concept2 rowing machine arrived on September 1, 2010. My goal is to hit 100 pounds lost before September 1st of the year.

I know some of you love cycling and now I know why. I bought a Trek 7.2 FX about 6 weeks ago. My routine now is alternating riding the bike and rowing with a heavier emphasis on the bicycle. My normal before work ride is about 10.7 miles at around a 15-16 mph pace. I use the mapmyride android app to log my workout and keep track of progress. I wish I had a video of the first couple times I used clipless pedals. I had one close call and one from a stop, very slow, fall to the side. If you've ever done it before, you know the feeling of acceptance that you're going to the ground slowly and there is nothing you can do about it.

I'm sure that's more than anyone wanted to read, but I missed you all and felt chatty on my day off.

Thank you for this bunny trail... or cow trail it seems :) I had to laugh when I read it, reminds me so much of when I was growing up. We had milk cattle until I was about 16 and always dreaded hearing the words "get up, the cows are out again". A little amusement for right before July 4th.

Great stories in your posting, Brett! Thanks for the update, and sharing the info on the diet book. As to the clipless pedals, I'll bet everyone who rides with them can relate. Feels kind of embarrassing when it happens...
Your bike is a great one for doing a lot of fun stuff, and love mapmyride app.

Hi Team,

I hit a million meters tonight - I know it is not in this rowing season, but when I started in March it was my goal to make this happen. Working 16 hour days has made it difficult but being able to read how everyone has different challanges and it really is a mind over matter. I will continue on making my million meters this season as well. along the way I have lost 30 pounds and feel so much better!

Thanks to all the motivation you all write - even if you don't know it when you write it, I make a point of checking in daily on how everyone else is doing. Brett - your story is awesome.... congratulations on your life changes and the birth of your new child.

Kona - I can't thank you enough for keeping the stats and post for us to stay in touch.

Happy rowing to all and may you all reach beyond your goals!!!
Ed
