Healthy is always always always good...it's so great to see teammates bouncing back, though...or RUNNING back as might be the case for you, bg! Celebrate all the victories, big and small. Woot!

Also good to see more returning teammates on the roster: welcome back to Gail and to Angelo. At this time last year, we had 64 on the roster, and this year 100 have checked in thus far. THAT'S HUGE! Wowzer, mates! And the milestones are click click clicking away!

Apologies if my late capture of the numbers messed up anyone's special number sequence. If I didn't capture it right, send me a message and I'll post a corrected version. Memorial Day, as a remembrance day, is one where we might see a lot of 888's, or a 1K, and would be good to get those postings right.

Season meters as of 26/365 = 12,431,982 m

Total meters on the day = 790,929 m

Oars in space (participation) = 52 percent

Memorial Day here in the US today - a day of remembrance for loved ones and the men and women who have lost their lives in the service of this country. Early traditions were to hold parades, place flags on gravesites. (Wondered if Da Do Ron Ron and his regiment were participating in any of these events?) The National Moment of Remembrance Resolution was passed in 2000, which asks that all Americans at 3 PM local time " voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps." Similar days of remembrance are celebrated in many other countries: Australia and New Zealand celebrate Anzac Day (April 25th). The Netherlands celebrate Dodenherdenking on May 4. The Royal Family holds a ceremony in Dam Square in Amsterdam and at 8PM, the entire country stops for two minutes to remember lost loved ones. Public transportation, radio and television broadcasts all come to a halt (thanks to ABLE innovations blog for the info).

And, in a segue to the team stats, can't help but think of sport heroes when I go through our roster. We have a lot of inspiring people on our team, and some teammates share who inspires them. Brotherjim loves baseball, and some of his earliest heroes were baseball players. His current profile picture shows a photo of Baseball Hall of Famer New York Yankee catcher (and manager and author) Yogi Berra. Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra got his nickname Yogi from a teammate who said he resembled a yogi (practictioner of yoga) whenever he sat around with arms and legs crossed waiting to bat or while looking sad after a losing game. Yogi's well known for creating some funny sayings. It's perhaps less well known that during World War II, Yogi served as a gunner's mate during the D-Day invasion. And by the way...Yogi wore the number 8 on his baseball uniform. There are no coincidences...

So however you celebrate your day today, hope you spend some time with those who are important to you.

Season meters as of 27 of 365 = 12,608,215 m

Total meters on the day = 176,233 m

The following is recited each night in our Returned Services Clubs, and of course on ANZAC Day...

But just as appropriate on your Remembrance Day...

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget

Cheers, BBB

Thanks, Baz and Ron, for providing a broader view of memorial day celebrations. Love hearing how different places in the world celebrate. While internet and other somewhat instantaneous communications provide some quick knowledge, the perspective of what the traditions mean and the roles they play in the culture aren't as easy to see in a snapshot of information.

The flower is a type of azalea. I had first seen it while hiking in the southern states with my father, probably about 14 years ago now. We both fell in love with the fiery appearance, and started calling it a *blaze azalea*. This one resides on our lawn along with a pink version (may use that picture as well), both are beautiful while in full bloom.

Image Another episode...

Image
A bronze of a skier carrying a baby is the profile picture for Concept2's member of the day, Todd Cedarholm. The photo sent me down a bunny trail before I could even capture the stats of the day...a bunny trail that tells of a great escape, and bravery of Norweigan x-country skiers who carried the embattled King's 18 month old son to safety by skiing through the mountains and forests of Norway. The skiers were called Birkebeiners due to the birch bark protective leggings used. Back in the early 1200s, Norway was busy with the Norweigan Civil War. The bronze Birkebeiner is one that is in Lillehammer, Norway. The route taken to safety was from Lillehammer to Trondheim....a distance of a couple hundred kilometers. Extraordinary acts by ordinary people - those are the things that inspire. The Birkebeiner race to safety is commemorated in Norway, and in the US each year. The American Birkie takes place in Wisconsin and has grown to be a series of events that reflect a lifestyle that is dedicated to health and outdoor fitness...whether you run, ski, row, bike. American Birkie has its own trail system and hosts a bunch of different activities. Here's a link to the history:

http://www.birkie.com/page/show/110405-history

And, while I did capture the numbers late in the day yesterday, I didn't get a chance to put the stats out on the forum. Pretty close to a million meters posted over the last two days - lotta good rowing going on!

Season meters as of 31/365 = 14,756,933 m

It was a great bunny trail, Astrogator. I wondered what it was about, when I saw the profile picture, last night. (Skiing with an 18-month old under your wing ... eghads. I can barely hold the 20-month old princess grand baby at hip level for 5 minutes!)

My bunny trail was looking at pictures of Brits in Union Jack dresses and red/white/blue bowler hats. Elizabeth II has been queen since 1952, and I have a picture of me as a 2-year old, waving a flag as she passed by on her way to her coronation. (Back when we walked 10 miles to school, through snow drifts. Not carrying babies.)

Both great bunny trails :)
