Awww, thanks :)

Had some back spasms that kept me off completely for a bit (first time for that) and my neck flares up if I go too hard so trying to find the right balance.

Is there a way to test your machine to see If are getting the resistance numbers that you should be getting. As an example putting the damper at 4, rowing a short time and expect to the resistance number in a certain range. Also if your fan housing is too close to a wall will it effect the resistance. Just trying to make sure cable is OK as numbers not where they used to be. Could be I'm just getting old, lol.

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I do know that periodically we are supposed to oil the chain, and even take the thing apart and vacuum out the various pieces. I've never taken one apart and vacuumed, but I do oil the chain and it makes a difference.

Thanks Conleyjm. I do oil the chain on a regular basis and have never been brave enough to venture inside the housing. I do vacum the outside. I got some good info in the C2 forums. Thanks for taking the time.

What info did you get? Maybe you could post a couple of links so interested folks here (like me!) can learn about it too?

I do oil my chain regularly but have never vacuumed or opened the flywheel housing. There be dragons! Or dust bunnies, maybe...

I think you guys all know more about the rower than I do, but isn't drag factor the real way to get resistance based at different damper settings and it varies based upon the state of the machine and varies slightly from machine to machine. So, on one machine at a damper setting of 6 you might have a drag factor of 110 (roughly equal to water resistance) and on another machine you may need to set the damper slightly higher to achieve the same drag factor, say six and a half. Tell me if I am stating the obvious here or if I am off/ontarget in terms of the resistance question. Not owning a rowing machine, I having been wanting to ask my gym if I could maintain their rowers, the fly wheels get dusty and I can tell it affects the drag factor.

Lisa and all this was the best response I got as I too was apprehensive about venturing into the housing.

The fan housing needs a cleanout with a brush and vac cleaner now and again and dust removed from the leading edge of the fan blades. I also remove the flywheel as it makes it easier to clean and also add just a spot of grease to the one way clutch bearing in the flywheel. Oil the chain and also I oil the two small chain rollers inside the machine or eventually they start to squeak and eventually cease up and then the chain cuts them in half. Keep the slide and rollers clean with a damp clth and thats about it. The elastic bunge cord lasts about 10 years at least and it helps to leave the handle against the cage and not in the handle holder and you get up to 15 years out of it.

I had several threads going and was concerned that maybe my machine was wearing out. Another individual told me a good way to check your machine is to set the damper at 10 and row. If you get a DF of around 200 your machine is fine.

I will be trying this along with trying to just vacuum the machine from the outside and maybe oil more often as I have been oiling every million meters. Actually going inside the housing will depend on my results. Hope this info has been helpful.

Row Strong, Row Hard.

Sorry one more thing, this link from C2 shows you how to vacuum the screen without completely taking the housing apart. http://www.concept2.com/service/indoor- ... aintenance

Hi John, this is how I understand it as well. I also notice that drag factor will differ slightly on the same machine daily, same setting every day, depending on the humidity level in the room. Just by a few points.

Maybe you can show the gym attendants the C2 website, and the sections dealing with maintenance. Maintaining the equipment is something they should be doing. Plus, taking these apart to clean is a big project and I would personally be afraid of screwing up!
