Man overboard!! Cap'n Izz has fallen off the boat and been taken by pirates to New Yawk! While he's away, I'm acting Cap'n, so, swab those decks and trim those mains'ls, you scurvy dogs!!  Well, enough of that. 18 of 89 members (20%) logged 151,309 total meters Tuesday!

Take a look at your form (as noted), but also try a few other things:
It might be a good opportunity to take a look at your whole body. Do some curls with a barbell and then cut the weight in half and do it with dumbbells. Notice the difference? One bicep can no longer compensate for the other. Do this with bodyweight squats as well and then try to do one-legged pistol squats. Use a chair if you need to support yourself. See how long you can do a side bridge and take note of any large difference in the length of time you can hold it on one side vs. the other. Non of these are back workouts, but perhaps the problem starts elsewhere first (or in addition to). I'm fresh out of ideas, but a physical therapist or very good trainer should probably be consulted just for the sake of injury prevention.

Hey, I just wanted to give a shout out to all the TimbukTOOers who are doing the Mud Season Madness contest. We are coming down to the wire, I have completed 24 rows of 5K or more, and tomorrow I will be closing it out and I'll move past 100K for the WEC as well. We have two days left in the Mud Challenge and then I am going to need to put in some longer rows or two-a-days to reach my 250K pledge for the WEC. Go team!

bcurry wrote:Hey Team,

I need some expert advice. My acupuncturist advised me that my back muscles were noticeably more developed on my right side vs my left side. Now that was probably the case before I started rowing but I am concerned I may be overusing my right side in my rowing.

How do I balance this out? Are there exercised I can do with the machine to help focus on the left side muscles?

Any advice or tips from your experience?
Hi Brent,

I am not a physical therapist, or a personal trainer so I am reluctant to just dole out advice without knowing the root cause of the issue. That said, I have dealt with my share of injuries and/or side focused weaknesses. If the imbalance is due to an injury or prior condition you may need to find exercises that do not allow as much balanced compensation as the rowing machine. For instance using a dumbbell and a bench, you could do one-arm bent over rows that would isolate the muscles on the side you were working. You still work both sides, but the opposite side doesn't help nearly as much. Work both sides equally always focusing on the weaker side first. The wonderful totally balanced nature of the rower might make it hard to achieve that level of isolation, i.e. the stronger side will always tend to compensate until you address the imbalance directly, with some form of additional isolation exercises. But, seek better advice than mine; as I said I am not a professional. I'm just a 50-something, trying to overcome my own obstacles.

Good luck, JB

Hello again, just FYI- Im taking 2-3 weeks off rowing, but not by choice!! Going away on business today to a rather small suburb, I looked everywhere for a hotel with an erg, and none nearby. There's a Snap Fitness a few miles away that has 'em, but Im not sure if I'll be able to get to it. Im having separation anxiety away from rowing already!

But unfortunately, the team event is now over for me. :( *cry*

Good luck to the rest of you!

Good luck to the rest of you!
That is a shame. You and the rest of the ladies in the top 3 Challenge standings have definitely been a motivating factor for me. I'm working hard to just stay in the top 5. The numbers you three are putting up are very impressive. It has me pushing for 10k everyday, even when I don't really want to. So thank you for the motivation.
